21: Date and Disguises

   "Hold still!" Harry commanded as he accidentally smeared red lipstick on my cheek.

  "Stop! Harry, this isn't going to work!" I squealed, covering my hands in front of my face.

  "Come on, we're going to be late! I made reservations!"

  "I'm going to look like a freaking clown."

  "You'll be a pretty clown! Now, come on. Let go."

  "No. I am not letting go."

  "Then we can't go out."

  "But why do I have to-"

  "Stop asking questions! Now, let go. For me?" Harry begged. Through a crack in my fingers I could see him pouting, and in one hand he held the cherry red lipstick that he bought from a cheap dollar store down the road.

  Giving in, I took my hands off of my face and Harry smiled in satisfaction. I knew that I had been defeated, but I'd rather lose him to a stupid argument over red lipstick than lose him, which I almost had did a week ago. Thinking that mere thought caused me to shudder, but it went by unnoticed by Harry (thankfully).

  "Why can't I help with your disguise, again?" I asked for the third time. We were prepping ourselves for doing on a disguise date, mostly in celebration that he had finally been able to get up and walk around and start his physical therapy, even though he dreaded it more than a cat taking a bath.

  "Because I'm taking you out so I get to have a little fun. Eyes closed, please?" Harry said, dabbing my eyeshadow brush into a bright pink color that my aunt got me when I was nine and makeup was only worn for when I played pretend.

  The reason we were wearing disguises was obvious. Paul still hadn't come up with a good reason for me to stay with he boys to present to their management. The boys had all explained how their management was painstakingly harsh, and that they shouldn't know what really happened to Harry or they'd have a fit and remove me from the picture entirely. We still had another three days to come up with a plan, but in the meantime Harry and I figured we could have a bit of fun, away from the boys (who I'd gotten to know a bit more personally).

  After Harry nearly poked my eye out with eye shadow, we moved on to wardrobe. He was already wearing a fake moustache, wig, a hat and remained unrecognized. To top it off he was wearing a rather ugly trench coat that went down to his knees, and all of his many tattoos were concealed.

  Harry had me bring any of the donated clothes that I hadn't worn to the hospital, and now they sat in a big heap in the corner of the room. When a nurse came in to tell us we were being too loud, her eyes immediately stopped on the heaping pile of clothes but she didn't say a word about it.

  "Okay. What about... this shirt with... this skirt?" Harry said, yanking a blue top and an itchy plaid school girl skirt that I had removed once I tried it on. The two hardly matched, but then again, who would recognize me? Nobody. And I think I owed it to Harry to let him have his little fun, what with him getting shot only a week ago.

  "Fine, fine. I'll be back." I said, heading to Harry's private bathroom. He smiled cheekily and waved before I locked the door, stripping out of my clothes and into the rather uncomfortable ones he had picked out for me. I wasn't going to complain, I kept telling myself, and when I came back out Harry laughed at me.

  "Hey! You were the one who picked it out!" I said defensively, crossing my arms over my chest. He bit his lip and I could see him sucking in his cheeks at attempting not to laugh, but I had to admit, I looked pretty darn unattractive.

  My blonde wig was extremely itchy, and I could feel the fake mole under my eye. My cherry red lipstick made me look like Dracula, and with the pink eyeshadow I was like a Barbie Dracula. Plus, I hadn't even gotten shoes because we hadn't thought that far.

  "You're right." Harry said. "We can just get some of Lou's Toms. His feet are tiny, anyway." He decided on that one. We both took out our cameras and took some pictures that would later go onto Twitter, but that would have to be after our date at the Tavern, a nearby coffee place a few blocks away. When Harry first asked me to go I refused, but with the whole disguise thing I had to admit it worked out extremely well. Besides, I didn't want to let Harry down and the idea of finally going on a date with him did sound appealing.

  "Tiff said she'll swing by and get me by nine." I said to Harry. He nodded quietly as we dug through a pile of Lou's dirty laundry and pulled out a pair of neon green Toms. He had been right, Lou's feet were tiny and they were even a bit small on me, but then again I always had awkwardly large feet.

  "Are we ready to go?" Harry asked, his arm waiting for my to lace mine through his. I couldn't help but blush as I linked arms with him through his one crutch and we hobbled out towards the parking lot, where a rental car would be waiting for us.

  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  The restaurant in itself was completely astonishing. All the tables were a lavish dark brown wood, and above was a spotlight that illuminated the table. In the corner of the room was a small koi pond, and from where the waiter sat us I could see fish swimming around. There were bamboo scattered in pots around just about everywhere, and they even made the bar look classy. Harry hadn't even mentioned the bar, because Liam probably told him about how I don't drink.
  The waiter escorted us to a table farther away from the bar and everyone else, probably sensing we didn't want to be stuck around the families who's kids had crayons up their nose and the old couple who were arguing nonstop about moving to a retirement home. He also didn't mention our stupid get ups, but I could feel a few rude people's eyes on us as we made our way to the table.
  Harry's fingers remained laced through mine and gripping my hand tightly the whole way to the table. I wasn't sure if this should have been some warning sign for me or if I should be pleased that he was being protective of me. Whatever it was, I dismissed the thoughts as we sat down and picked out different things from the menu.
  "They've got barbecue ribs, mmm." I commented, trying to break the silence. Harry smiled crookedly so that one dimple was shown, but he looked great nonetheless. Well, aside from the crazy outfit and fake facial hair.
  "Let's split them and get a side of curly fries." Harry decided. I laughed as I took a sip of my Coca-Cola.
  "Curly fries for curly," I sang. He nudged me under the table and we both laughed, but I could tell we were both looking out for any signs of people recognizing us. This was supposed to be the perfect night where we forgot everything and just enjoyed ourselves, but now I could already feel those plans ruining. It made my heart sink and feel a bit heavier in my chest, but before I could think much about ti the waiter came back and took our orders.
  "Da- um, Sarah." Harry covered up quickly, his eyes darting across the room. I giggled and it came out sounding awkward. "I just want you to know that I really like you and you're not slipping away so easily. I sound like I freaking kidnapped you right now." Harry laughed. A lump rose in my throat and my wrist shook so that I had to set down my drink. Harry stopped laughing and looked at me seriously, and I felt my eyes burning- if only for a few seconds.
  "It's fine, it's fine. You were saying?" I said, trying to change the subject around. Harry could realize that, so he cleared his throat once more and began again.
  "I'm sorry about, erm. Yeah. But I want you to know that you're completely safe and nothing is going to happen to you. Natha- that man, he's going to be put in jail. Paul will see to it that he's punished and everything can go back to normal. So, what I'm saying is... will you be my girlfriend?"
  "Yes, Harry. I will." I said, trying to hide my pleased smile. Harry reached across the table and kissed my quickly, but I could tell that crayon-nose kids could see it from across the isle began they were pulling on their mom's sleeve and staring at us, wide eyed.
  When the food finally came, things went back to normal. Harry and I were conversing normally and there didn't seem to be much tension in the air. I was already beginning to think that this date might just be perfect, because that was definitely the direction that it was heading in, no doubt.
  "So then Lou got this trashcan lid for one of the videos and put it over his head, and the whole rest of the day he smelled awful." Harry laughed. I chuckled, drenching my curly fry in some ketchup that we had pretty much demolished. When I was with Harry I felt like I didn't have to worry about table manners or be self conscious, I could be myself around him. I could be real.
  "He's something. Yesterday he made me buy him a pack of bubble gum. He chewed it all at once and blew this huge bubble, I want to say it was as big as my head. Then Paul had to get that Lou lady to cut it out for him." I snorted. Harry was grinning as he shook his head, finishing up his small plate of wings (which were unbelievable amazing).
  "That girl would be Lou Teasdale. She's got this little baby Lux, and maybe if you can come on the road with us you could help us babysit her, and I even made her a Twitter." She's adorable." Harry noted, taking a big sip of his Pepsi. We'd been talking for over an hour, and crayon nose kids and the old people had gone, making it easier for us to talk and not worry about a little audience.
  I was about to reply something, when the front door bell jingled and in strode two familiar faces. Their eyes had scanned the room, but they didn't recognize us obviously. A pretty blonde waitress greeted them at the front door and started babbling on about their specials, and I could hear Harry try and tell me something, but I could hear him. My eyes were trained on the pair as they made their way down past us and three booths down.
  It took a while for Harry to realize who they were, but when he saw them it looked as if his eyes would pop out of their sockets.
  And who those two people might be, you ask?
  Nathan and Vanessa.
