家族 - Family

Saya skipped down the hallway clutching three brightly colored papers. She hummed a joyful tune and twirled around, accidentally bumping into Light Yagami.

"Watch your step, little one." Light laughed and ruffled her hair, "What makes you so happy?"

"Light we have to get going. The rest of the team is waiting." Ryuzaki reminded him and tugged on the handcuff that connected them.

Saya clutched the papers close to her chest, "I have something to give to you guys and Uncle Matsu. But I want to do it all at once."

"Alright." Ryuzaki hesitantly agreed, "Come this way."

When they got to the investigation room Temari was more than a bit surprised to see her little sister. Devoid of her usual chatter, she stood awkwardly in the doorway holding Light's hand.

"Saya!" Matsuda exclaimed and kissed the little girl's cheeks, "What brings you here?"

She let go of Light's hand and stood before Matsuda, looking shyly at the ground, "I have something to give you."

"What is it?"

Saya gave Matsuda one of the papers he had hidden behind her back, "It's an invitation for family night at school."

"Family night?" Matsuda's eyes sparkled, "I'd love to go!"

"Do you promise? Daddy promised but he never came." Saya's gaze returned to the floor.

Matsuda took the young girl into his arms and hugged her close, "I'm not like your daddy. I keep my promises to the people I love. I promise I will come to Family Night. You can count on me."

Saya snuggled deeply into his shoulder, "I love you, Uncle Matsu."

"I love you too, Miss Sayako. Is there anyone else you'd like to invite to Family Night?"

The little girl nodded and let go of the young man. She handed flyers to Ryuzaki and Light, "You can come too, if you want. And Temari."

"I want to go!" Light responded immediately and then looked expectantly at Ryuzaki, who was still studying the paper.

"Well," Ryuzaki pondered, "If Light is going and I am connected to Light, I guess I really don't have a choice in the matter. Will there be cookies?"

Saya smiled, "Uh huh. My teacher said we're all baking sweets earlier in the day. There will be plenty of cookies for you, Ryu."

The messy black haired man bent down and gently tweaked Saya's nose, causing her to smile even wider. He took her small hand, "I've never really had a family so this concept of love and caring is new to me. Sayako, can you tell me how I can let people know that I love and care for them?"

"That's easy!" Saya replied, "You hold them close don't let go. Then you just say it."

"What do you say?"

Saya giggled, "You're so silly sometimes, Ryu. You say 'I love you'. It's as simple as that."

"Alright then. Here I go." Ryuzaki did exactly as Saya had told him to do. He gathered up the little girl in his arms and held her close. "I love you." But instead of happiness and warmth, he felt the wet drops of tears being absorbed by his shirt.

Ryuzaki remembered the night with Temari when he first brought up love. She told him that he had done it right but he wasn't sure. For all of his life crying had meant sadness, that something bad and tragic had happened. Love was supposed to be a good thing. Why is it that people cry whenever they are told that they are loved?

"C'mon guys, we're gonna be late!" Temari put on her final shoe and knocked on Ryuzaki's door, "Are you almost done?"

The door opened and Ryuzaki stepped into view, wearing his usual white long sleeved shirt and faded blue jeans "I am ready."

"No you're not!" Temari nudged him back into the room, "You have snack crumbs all over your pants and I can see a stain that I would not like to get to know on a personal level. Can you try to put something on that's a bit nicer looking? And your hair looks like it just got electrocuted. Brush it."

She closed the door, hoping that Ryuzaki could find something decent to wear, and checked on Matsuda and Light. They were ready and dressed in appropriate attire. Even Temari had abandoned her usual lazy khakis for a skirt and collared shirt. It was only Ryuzaki that was holding them behind.

"Ryuzaki is just weird, you should know that by now." Matsuda said as he watched Temari rush back and forth between rooms, "People aren't going to judge him. Well, they might, but not that much."

Temari ran a quick brush through her own wavy locks, "No, we want to seem like a normal family."

"Normal?" Light laughed, "When were we ever normal?"

Ryuzaki stepped into the living room where they were waiting, "Is this better?"

He was dressed in the same outfit as before, but with less noticeable stains. Temari sighed, "I guess that'll do. Now all you need to do is out on some socks and shoes and we'll be ready to go."

"No." Ryuzaki wildly shook his head from left to right, "I won't wear socks. I don't like socks."

Temari crossed her arms, "You have to wear them." She grabbed his sleeve and pulled him in to the bedroom, "It's what normal people do."

"Let me go! I don't like socks!" The man struggled, desperately trying to get away.

"You've got to wear them!"

Temari jumped on his back, successfully dragging him down to the floor with a thud. Ryuzaki thrashed around and begged for mercy. But Temari was not going to give in. He would wear socks to Family Night no matter what the cost.

"I thought something like this would happen."

Watari stood at the doorway and chuckled at the two individuals tangled up on the floor. Temari had somehow found herself sitting on Ryuzaki's back, trying to force socks upon his feet.

"She's hurting my back." Ryuzaki whined and swung his legs, almost kicking Temari in the face, "Watari! Tell Temari that I don't need socks."

The older man chuckled, "It's true. Ryuzaki has never worn socks in his whole life, not even when he was young. It's useless trying to get them on to him now."

"Fine." Temari let go of the small items of clothing, "But can I at least brush his hair? He has crumbs in it."

Watari looked at his watch, "I don't think you'll have time for that. It is now 17:45 and Family Night starts in 30 minutes. I would suggest that you get going soon."

"That's too bad." The girl pouted, "Oh well." She stood up and stretched, "C'mon Ryu, it's time to go."

Ryuzaki grumbled and returned to his feet, but nevertheless patted Temari's head affectionately and continued out into the hallway. The black haired man took the handcuffs and attached himself to Light, "Alright, let's go."

Temari vigorously shook her head and tugged on the chain connecting them, "Ryuzaki you can't just go into the public like this! People are going to think you're a weird kinkster or something. Unlock them!"

"Fine." Ryuzaki handed Temari the key, "But this is completely defeating the point of the whole investigation."

After a short 10 minute drive, they arrived at Family Night. Little lights were hung around the entrance of Bamboo Elementary School, giving it a shimmering look and welcoming feeling. Saya was in class 1-A so the quartet went in search of the classroom. Their progress was slow, considering the fact that Ryuzaki would stop walking what seemed like every five seconds to look at the artwork and posters covering the hallways.

"Matsuda, Light, you can go ahead." He told the rest of the group, "I want to stay here for a while."

Realizing that at Ryuzaki's pace they would never reach Saya before sunrise, the two men hurried along to find the classroom. Temari stayed behind with Ryuzaki. She'd already seen an elementary school classroom dozens of times. Besides, she knew that Saya would me much more pleased to see Matsuda and Light than her.

"Did you go to elementary school?" Temari asked the man studying the portrait of a dog, obviously made by a kindergartener.

"I went to a school for gifted children." Ryuzaki explained, "There was no concept of grades or years there. Each child worked on their own specific interests and skills with a highly ranked specialist in that area. It was very individualized."

"That sounds so cool. What was it called?"

Ryuzaki paused and looked at the girl, "The school is called Wammy's House and it is in England. You know, I was actually thinking of sending you there at one point in time."

"Really?" Temari perked up, "I'd like that. Can I go?"

He shook his head and returned to examining the artwork, "No. First off, you're much too old. Education at Wammy's House most commonly starts when a child is five to eight years old. Second, you are too important to the Kira investigation. If I should die you and Light are to take over in my place."

"Don't talk like that, Ryuzaki." Temari buried her head in his chest, "Don't talk about dying. I don't want to lose you."

"It was just a thought for the future." Ryuzaki assured her and patted her head, "Anyway, this night is about Saya, isn't it? I'm done looking here and I want to see her."

Temari pulled herself away and nodded confidently, "Let's go."

Classroom 1-A was filled with people. Temari had forgotten that Japanese classes are about 15 children larger than the American counterpart, so about thirty extra people were stuffed into the teaching room. It also didn't help that she lost Ryuzaki as soon as they entered.

"Temari! Over here!" Matsuda waved from over by some desks. Relieved that she wasn't alone in a sea of unknown people, she maneuvered as quickly as she could over to Saya, Matsuda, and Light.

"Where's Ryuzaki?" Light asked, "Wasn't he with you?"

"Yeah, but as soon as I got in here he just sort of left." Temari explained.

Saya pointed to the front of the room, "There are cookies up there. Maybe he went to get one."

"I'll get him." Temari groaned and set off toward the front of the room again. Ryuzaki always thought with his stomach more than anything.

Saya was correct; there was a large display of sweets up at a table in the front. And who else was first in line to check it out than Ryuzaki himself. The small paper plate held a wavering tower of treats. Temari wasn't even sure how he managed to get them all to balance on top of eachother.

"Ryuzaki." Temari stood by his side with her arms crossed on her chest, "Do you remember what we talked about before we left the house? Two cookies only."

"Um, uh hello Temari." Ryuzaki quickly looked around in panic, "This isn't what it looks like."

"Oh yeah? Then what is it?"

Ryuzaki leaned down and whispered in her ear, "Maybe it is what it looks like, but if you keep it a secret I'll give you a strawberry. Strawberries are my favorite. This is a once in a lifetime offer."

"I'm sorry Ryuzaki, but I don't accept payment in fruit."

His shoulder slumped, "Fine. I'll put them back."

Temari made sure to watch as Ryuzaki placed the excess sweets back on their corresponding trays. Finally, he was down to three cookies. He looked at Temari with pleading eyes. The girl sternly shook her head.

"Two cookies." Temari reminded him.

Ryuzaki exhaled nosily, "Fine." He put back the last chocolate drizzled treat, "Are you happy now?"

"Very much."

Temari and Ryuzaki went to the back of the room where the rest of the group was. Saya was showing them a large wall that was covered in childlike drawings. A large sign above the pictures read "Our Families"

"Mine is right here." Saya stood on her tiptoes and tapped a piece of paper in the third row, "I have the biggest family is the whole class."

There certainly were a lot of people in her drawing, seven to be exact. Under each portrait a name was scribbled in messy kanji. Big Brother Light, Uncle Matsu, Father Ryu, Grandfather Watari, and Big Sister Temari. Two people were above all the rest. Yellow halos encircled their heads. Their description read 'Mommy and Daddy'

"Do you like it?" Saya asked timidly.

"It's the prettiest thing I've ever seen!" Matsuda exclaimed. He picked up the little girl and spun her around, "I am so lucky to be part of your family."

Saya smiled, "Me too."
