Let's try a high fantasy AU GusLey!
~~~~~
Three hundred years ago, there lived a mythical beast called the 'Night Dragon', the Lord of all beasts. It was said that the Lord Beast was so powerful that it could crushed the whole world in his palm.
People praised him and it was a tradition to do a ritual for him every 'Blue Moon' which occurs once in a century. It was when his power was the strongest.
Also, every year, starting from February, was the mating season for the beasts. The mating season lasts for six months.
However, he never did this mating which made people confused.
Humans and beasts were living peacefully until one day, the whole most civilized clan— the Mayans— were all found dead.
A scripture was retrieved by the group of archmages and their eyes widened upon reading it.
The Mayans were well-known as fortune-tellers as they can predict on what would happen in the future.
In the scripture, it was said that the Mayans foretold that the Night Dragon would destroy the whole world in his hands with anger. Afraid of the devastating future, the Mayans killed all of themselves before experiencing hell in the Night Dragon's hands.
Afraid of the possibility it would happened, the archmages united to put the Night Dragon into a slumber.
A woman wearing a cloak entered the tavern. There were many drunk men all over the place but she went straight to the bar corner.
The old bartender recognized her as he placed a glass of white wine.
Despite her job, she wasn't really a heavy drinker.
Another woman sat beside her who was also recognized by the bartender so he place a glass of vodka to her.
"You finished your job already?" The woman asked her.
She nodded and took a sip of her wine.
"You always work fast."
"I don't have much things to do anyway." She answered in a low voice.
The woman in cloak removed her hood, revealing her long, magenta hair.
She dropped a bag of gold coins to the woman beside her, "Any information?"
"I still couldn't find its location. Although one descendant of the archmages three hundred years ago said that it must be on the abandoned temple in the heart of Mythical Forest. But you shouldn't go there, Lesley." The woman warned her.
"I worked so I can pay you for information so I can find him. What's the use if I don't go there?" The woman with magenta hair named Lesley said.
"Mythical Forest is so dangerous. It's the habitat of all beasts in this world. No one gets out once they entered the forest."
Lesley emptied her glass of wine, "It's okay, I don't have anything to lose anyway." She pushed the bag of gold coins to the woman, "Thank you, Esmeralda."
Lesley stood to leave, but Esmeralda grabbed her hand.
"Lesley, wait—"
Esmeralda didn't finish her sentence when she saw something as she grabbed Lesley. She felt a sudden headache.
"What's wrong?" Lesley asked in confusion.
Taking deep breaths, Esmeralda calmed herself, "Nothing. Be careful, Lesley. As much as possible, don't do something dangerous."
The magenta-haired woman smiled sadly, "Thank you, I'll be fine." Were her last words before she left the tavern.
Esmeralda was left there sitting as she clasped her hands. Please guide her, I hope I'm not wrong.
=====
There was actually a restriction line in the borders of Mythical Forest. Once she stepped outside that line, she would be out of that protection barrier against the beasts.
But all her life, her job was to hunt beasts.
People say that beasts were all kind except when they were provoked.
But if they were kind then my parents would still be alive today.
They lived almost on the outskirts of the empire. Lesley was living a simple life with her parents when she was still a child. Her father was a hunter of wild animals while her mother stayed with her in their house.
They were having another normal day in their lives when it turned into a nightmare.
Their small and simple house was attacked by a beast in a form of red lion.
She saw with her own eyes how the beasts killed her parents— and the seven-year old her couldn't do anything.
She trembled with her, awaiting for her life to be ended by the beast. It slowly walked towards her, raising its claws, and she couldn't do anything but closed her eyes as she faced her death.
"Magenta hair." She remembered the beast said before it slashed her face— across her left eye, blinding it.
That was the start of her hatred towards the beasts. She started using her father's rifle to kill every beast she saw.
To end all the beasts at once, she was looking for the Night Dragon, the Lord of all beasts. It was said that the Night Dragon was still in slumber, so she must take this opportunity to kill it and make all beasts vanish.
To avenge my parents' death. Lesley thought. I don't have anything to lose now, except for my life which is very useless anyway. I'm just living to avenge my parents.
Taking a deep breath and clasping her father's rifle tightly, she took a step outside the restriction line.
=====
Weird.
Was Lesley's first thought as she walked inside the Mythical Forest.
She thought that there would be many beasts lurking around— but she was walking for a while now and she saw no beast at all.
She didn't know how long she was walking until she saw a silver deer.
A beast. Lesley thought and grabbed her rifle, aiming for the deer.
But it stealthily ran away so she had no choice but to follow it.
Its antlers were glowing, as if it was giving her illumination around the dark Mythical Forest.
But she didn't mind it. All she wanted was to kill it— kill every beast she saw.
She didn't know how long she was following the deer when she reached a dead end. At the same time, she lost the sight of the silver deer.
She looked up and saw that it was a mountain— she could see fire on top of it.
Is this the middle of the Mythical Forest? The heart? She thought. Then the temple must be up here.
She started climbing up the mountain. She didn't mind the blisters and wounds she got from spiky vines and plants.
When Lesley successfully reached the top, she saw an old temple, although all of the torches were still burning despite the strong wind there.
She carefully stepped inside while clutching her rifle.
Her heart was thumping so hard as she walked towards the end of the hallway of the temple.
Lesley reached a very huge door. She took a deep breath before opening it carefully.
She almost gasped when she saw what was inside.
There was a big black dragon, sleeping.
Is this the Night Dragon? Lesley thought. She aimed her rifle towards it. This is for my parents, I hope you understand me.
Just when Lesley was about to pull the trigger, the dragon's eyes opened, making her startle.
Those purple eyes were piercing her.
Astonished, Lesley involuntarily took a step backward as she watched the Night Dragon slowly stood.
Every step of the dragon towards her, she took three steps backward.
"What kind of smell is this?" The Night Dragon said in his low voice as he slowly approached her. "How did you get in here?"
"D-don't come near me! Or I'll shoot you!" Lesley warned the Night Dragon as she pointed her rifle to him.
But the Night Dragon didn't mind as he still walked towards her.
Lesley didn't notice that she was already outside the temple and few steps more, she would fall down from the mountain.
"Stop moving!" The Night Dragon told her.
"Stop approaching me— Ah!" Lesley exclaimed as she already reached the edge— falling from the mountain.
Just when she thought she would die, the Night Dragon flew and saved her from falling.
What? He saved me? Lesley thought as she was on the Night Dragon's back.
When she thought she was already saved, the Night Dragon's wings stopped flapping. She grabbed onto his back as they fell on the ground.
She heard the Night Dragon groaned.
Lesley hopped down and went in front of him, "Are you okay?"
The Night Dragon groaned again before speaking, "Great, I just woke up so I still have not regained my energy and now I'm hurt."
Lesley felt guilty she saw the wounds on the Night Dragon's wings. She looked up to the mountain, there was no way she could carry this huge Night Dragon up there.
She looked around and saw a cave nearby.
"Can you walk? I have to treat your wounds." Lesley told him.
"I just woke up and I already heard the most ridiculous thing a human would say to me." The Night Dragon said and slowly got up, "I'm the Lord Beast, little woman. I can heal my own wounds immediately."
Lesley let out an exasperated sigh, "You said you still haven't regain your energy and as I can see, your wounds aren't healing. Let's move over that cave and have your wounds treated."
The Night Dragon tsked before walking towards the cave.
Once they settled in, Lesley started a fire and got her bag to bring out bandages.
The Night Dragon was sitting while watching her.
She gave him a deadpan look, "Can you at least, lay down? I can't reach your wings."
The Night Dragon groaned in frustration but laid down nonetheless.
As she treated his wounds, she asked him.
"Why did you save me? I was here to kill you."
"Hah! Kill me? With that little thing?" He nodded his head towards her rifle, "You can't kill me with that thing."
Lesley gritted her teeth.
"Are you throwing your life away? A mere human can't kill the Lord Beast." The Night Dragon added.
"You could say that." She whispered, "I have nothing to lose anyway."
The Night Dragon gave her a side glance but didn't comment. They stayed silent until she finished putting bandages on his wings.
"Done." Lesley announced and went back to her bag to put the remaining bandages.
But then she was startled when she felt the Night Dragon's breath from her back.
"What kind of smell do you have?" He asked as he continued sniffing around her.
"W-what smell? I don't wear any perfume." She answered.
Her natural scent? The Night Dragon thought. It's so enticing. It's my first time to smell such enticing scent.
The Night Dragon already saw a lot of human women being offered to him before but none of them perked his interest.
None of them was the one he wanted, his mate— to be precised.
But this little woman in cloak in front of him— it was his first time to see her and yet she had this enticing scent that he couldn't get enough.
That scent woke him up from his slumber.
Damn those archmages. He thought when he remembered they sealed him to put him in a long slumber just because of a scripture from the crazy Mayans.
Crazy as they killed themselves because they saw that I will crushed this world in my hands? What a nonsense.
He stared at the woman in front of him. He couldn't decipher that something about her.
He felt something weird.
"Who is the emperor of the empire now?" He asked her.
Confused by his question, the woman tilted her head. "Not an emperor but Her Majesty Empress Silvanna. We have a prince consort though."
Silvanna? Never heard that name. "Who is her father?"
"Former Emperor Aurelius."
His eyes twitched. Aurelius was the great grandson of the emperor when the archmages put him in slumber.
I guess, I was asleep for more than three hundred years. He thought as he felt something weird again while looking at the woman in front of him.
He already had an idea but he wanted to make sure. "What month is it now?"
The woman furrowed her eyebrows, "February."
Great, just great. The Night Dragon closed his eyes tightly for a second.
"Leave this place immediately. Go back to the empire." He said and turned his back from her.
"Wait, I just have a question—"
"Just leave and don't come back." He cut her.
The more he smelled her scent and heard her voice, the harder he could control himself.
"But I have to know—"
"Just go!" He shouted and turned to face her.
She was so startled that the hood of her cloak fell from her head, revealing her magenta hair.
The Night Dragon's eyes widened upon seeing her hair.
Ma...genta hair? He thought.
Before he knew it, he involuntarily transformed in his human form and hovered the magenta-haired woman to the floor— burying his face in her hair, inhaling her intoxicating scent that was driving him crazy.
Lesley was so shocked that she tried to push him away but what was her odds to win against the Lord Beast?
"W-wait, get off of me." She struggled as she continued to push him away.
He lifted himself to look at her and Lesley got a full view of the Night Dragon's human form.
He was tall, brown hair, purple eyes, a very sculpted face— in short, he was the most handsome man that Lesley saw.
But he's a beast. She thought as she glanced at him.
He looked like he was ready to pounce her— as if the predator had captured its prey.
He grabbed some of her hair and twisted in his fingers before he brought it to his nose and smelled it.
He looked so intoxicated while smelling her.
And as if the scent of her hair wasn't enough, he buried his face on her neck, inhaling her.
"You smell so sweet and your hair is so mesmerizing. I told you to leave, didn't I?" He whispered in her ear— his hot breath fanning her.
"I was barely controlling myself but I lost it when I saw the color of your hair." He said and bit her ear, making her moan but she quickly covered her mouth.
His lips grazed her cheek as he stared at her intensely, removing her hand from her mouth.
"Let me hear your voice, sweet woman. You can call me Gusion, don't be shy to shout it later when I claim you mine." He said possessively and claimed her lips for a kiss.
And that was when it dawned Lesley...
February is the start of mating season for beasts!
