Chapter 3: Part 4

Monokuma wasn't kidding when he said we were in an adventure park. When the sun rose the next morning, the light revealed that we were literally in what looked like the kind of place I'd pay tons of money to spend a day at in the summer! There were BMX bikes and tracks, mountain biking, rope courses, bungee towers, and a large, empty tank.

"CHECK ME OUT!" Bashira yelled as soon as I approached the BMX tracks. She was riding one of the bikes around without a helmet and doing tricks off the jumps. Something about the way she was grinning told me she did this kind of stuff often. She was the ultimate daredevil, after all.

"Careful!" I giggled as she did a bunch of flips and tricks. She never crashed once, which was a relief. Eventually, she finished the course and rode her bike down next to me, stopping just two feet in front of me and making a cloud of dirt puff up and into my face.

"Want a try?" she asked with an excited grin.

"I'll pass," I chuckled. I knew how to ride a bike, but from the looks of that track, I would probably fall and break my skull open or something, which wasn't really how I wanted my day to go.

"Fine by me," Bashira shrugged before pedaling forward and going again. I giggled at her excitement, then looked over at the opposite end of the track, where Ahmya was sitting on a small bench, watching her friend.

Before the rafting trip, I never took them for being close. I mean, they were roommates, but I wasn't around them often, so I didn't know that they were actually friends. Not everyone seemed as close to their roommates as I was with Tora.

"Dang, she's got some skills," Yuuki chuckled while walking up to me. He placed his hands on his hips and nodded at Bashira. "She was telling me about some of the crazy things she's done while we were rafting."

"Right," I nodded. "She was your first choice, right?"

"Yep!" Yuuki nodded. "I thought that if I couldn't have the ultimate adventurer on my team, the ultimate daredevil would be the next best thing for that kind of trip. Sorry, I didn't pick you, by the way. I was going to, but Rantaro got you first."

"Oh, don't worry about it," I giggled. "I don't think any of us took it personally. I mean, we're all ultimates. We're good sports!"

"Yeah," Yuuki agreed. "We are. And I have a feeling that the rafting adventure only brought us all closer together! This is the dream team, Suki! All of us! I can feel it!"

His positive energy spread through me like a virus. I agreed with him because this was the dream team! We may have been suspicious of one another before, but the rafting trip allowed us to get to know one another. It forced us to truly become a team. Monokuma has been constantly thinking of ways to drive us apart, but in reality, he has brought us all together. Not just with the rafting, but with the game itself. We were going to rise up and defeat him. We were going to get out of here!

"Guys!" Sora gasped, running up to us and waving frantically. "Guys, guess what I found!"

He was slightly pale in the face, but I did my best to ignore it. He was probably just cold. It had been getting colder and colder since we got here. (It felt like autumn now, honestly. Still sunny, but there was a slight chill in the air that wasn't there before.)

"Equipment! Tons of equipment out in the woods! It looks like a plane crash!" the pilot excitedly squealed. "I can build one!"

"Build what?" Yuuki asked.

"A plane!" Sora exclaimed. "A plane! A plane! A plane! I can build one, and we can fly away! All of us!"

"Oh, Sora!" Yuuki cried out, suddenly picking the pilot up and spinning him around. "Are you serious?! You know how to do that?!"

"If anyone can, it's me!" Sora laughed, coughing slightly. His coughs were well masked, though. "I AM the ultimate pilot, after all. The plane looks mostly assembled already, so it  won't take me too long!"

"That means we can get out of here!" Yuuki gasped, setting him down. "All of us together!"

The ultimate hero looked at me excitedly. A smile spread to my face as I thought of it. All of us flying away from this terrible place. Sora in the cockpit with me and Ruji sitting in the front. I could almost see the ghostbuster excitedly looking out the window as we soared over the clouds. I could practically feel Kichiro kicking the back of my seat while Yuuki made announcements over the intercom about how happy he was that we all escaped together.

It was a happy daydream.

A few moments later, everyone else more or less strolled out of their cabins. Sora didn't share news of the plane yet as everyone gathered. At first, I didn't understand why he wasn't blurting it out, but I soon realized that he was waiting for the Monokuma announcement to pass. He didn't want the bear showing up and ruining his moment. Besides, if Monokuma showed up and heard, it would probably ruin the plan.

I was thankful to see Kichiro up and walking again. Gauze covered his temple, likely because Daiki bandaged him up. The small boy didn't draw attention to it, though. He acted as he always did, grinning mischievously. "I liiiiiiiive," he sang.

I was glad he did.

Once they saw the group gathering together, Bashira and Ahmya made their way over as well. As soon as they joined, Monokuma popped up to make his announcements. It would have scared me had I not expected his arrival.

"Are we all here?! Lovely! Lovely! First things first, I wanted to congratulate you all on surviving those rapids! Wasn't that such a fun experience to go through with friends?"

Ahmya's eye twitched as Yuuki nodded and stepped forward. "Yes," the hero announced. "In fact, it has brought us all closer together. Your plans failed, Monokuma. We are going to beat you-"

"Blah, blah, blah, hope, hope, hope. Will you shut up, already?" Monokuma huffed with a mocking tone. "If anything, growing closer only increases the amount of despair that will come when one of you betrays the rest-"

"It's not happening," Brittany said, sticking her tongue out at the bear immaturely. "We're total besties now. You're adorably squishiness will never change that!"

"Oh, but it will," Monokuma said, lowering his voice slightly. "For I have come BEARING the next motive!!!"

"Aaand the bear puns are back," Ahmya muttered.

"Yep! And since the lovely Rantaro was the best captain, I think it's only fair that he be the first to experience this new motive! Everyone, give Captain Rantaro a hand!"

Everyone fell silent and turned to face Rantaro as Monokuma excitedly clapped. The ultimate adventurer didn't look scared, though. He was uneasy, but not scared.

"What is it?" he asked coldly.

"You'll see! This way, this way!" Monokuma laughed, taking Rantaro's hand and leading him away. We all quickly followed as the bear led the ultimate adventurer to the large glass tower.

When I say large, I mean medium-sized. It was about twenty tall and ten feet wide. Nothing too massive, but still a fairly big tank. It was completely clear, so we could see right in it.

Monokuma walked Rantaro up a small set of metal stairs that wrapped around the back and opened a hatch on the top, then pushed Rantaro in, closing and locking the hatch behind him. I gasped and covered my mouth, feeling the second-hand claustrophobia starting to kick in, but Rantaro remained calm.

"Each student will have to spend four hours in this cute little display!" Monokuma explained.

My shoulders relaxed slightly.

"Oh," Keiko breathed, letting out a visible sigh of relief. "Is that it?"

"Yep! Four hours, then you switch! Each of you will be summoned via monopad, so keep it close. There's a twenty-minute grace period, but if you're late, a painful execution awaits you! Puhuhuhu!"

This was probably the least terrifying motive of all. I mean, spending four hours in a box would surely be uncomfortable, but as far as motives go, how would something like this inspire us to kill? Maybe Monokuma was finally losing his touch!

"Oh, and one more thing!" Monokuma giggled. He pulled out a small remote with a red button on it, then smashed his fist down.

Water slowly started to fill the box.

Rantaro looked down at his shoes, which were starting to get soggy from the steadily rising liquid.

"The water will keep rising. One and a half feet per person!" Monokuma laughed. "The order in which you will be summoned will be posted on the outside of the glass box! Enjoy your day at the adventure park!"

With that, the bear disappeared, leaving a slip of paper on top of the box. I shook my head, then scrambled up the stairs and to the hatch, ignoring the paper and fighting to get it open so we could get Rantaro out of there!

"Suki, it won't open without him," Rantaro breathed, looking up at me with a calm expression. "He said it only rises a foot and a half per person, so I'll be fine."

"Yeah, but what happens when the box completely fills!" I cried out. "Someone will drown!"

I always hated the idea of drowning. Being stuck underwater with air just in sight but out of reach was one of my worst nightmares. I enjoyed swimming occasionally, but that still didn't stop me from fearing drowning.

"Just check the list," he breathed.

I did as he said and grasped the list, checking the order.

Rantaro, Suki, Yuuki, Brittany, Sora, Bashira, Saikoro, Ruji, Keiko, Daiki, Ahmya, and Kichiro. That was the order.

I shook my head, then pressed the piece of paper to the glass box so everyone could see. The back of it stuck like a sticker.

"Heh, unlucky me," Kichiro chuckled. "Last again."

What would happen if everyone were to make it through? Would it just start at Rantaro again and repeat? By then, he'd probably be fine, but if it were to get to me on a second round, the box would surely be full.

I shivered at the thought.

"I can't swim," Ahmya whispered.

We all, including Rantaro, turned our attention to her.

She was pale once again. Trembling like a leaf.

"Ahmya," Bashira whispered, paling slightly as well. The daredevil ran to her friend and took Ahmya's one hand in both of hers. "Hey... we'll figure something out-"

"I don't want to die," Ahmya interrupted. "Not by water."

"I know. And you won't," Bashira promised.

"Yeah!" Sora added. "You're second to last, right? So that gives us... about 40 hours until your turn. If I work hard, I can try to get the plane done by then!"

"Sora, I think that's impossible," Ruji muttered quietly.

"Oh please! If I've learned anything, it's that nothing's impossible!" Sora chimed with a thumbs up as he covered a quiet cough. "We just have to try. If we don't even try, that's a guaranteed failure."

"Exactly!" Bashira smiled, brushing some stray strands of hair from Ahmya's face and smiling a comforting smile. "We're all here. We're not going to let you in there. We'll save you."

We checked with everyone else. Each student knew how to swim, though treading for four hours did seem like a difficult task. I felt bad for people with the later time slots who would have to do that. I was fortunate enough to get lucky with my slot. I wonder what went into choosing them. Perhaps the rafting trip. I mean, the two people who needed to be saved were last, so maybe Monokuma planned this on purpose.

At first, we planned on all waiting by the box to make sure things were alright, but eventually, we decided to disperse. Four hours was a long time to wait, and Rantaro told us that he felt a little awkward with each of us staring at him through the glass. "It's like I'm on display," he had said. "I'm on display, and I don't like it."

Sometimes, I felt like we were all on display. Each of us, we were on display for Monokuma.

On display for someone else, too. Though, I had no idea who.
