The Love Letter (Kazukoi: Kazuichi X Mahiru)
"Man. This blows." Kazuichi said, lying on his bed.
It was a week after Teruteru was executed. Nagito had been tied up in the old lodge, the second island was now available, the incredibly tasty food was now just regular tasty food prepared by Monokuma or Monomi or whoever fucking makes it, and the island seemed to have less rules without Byakuya around.
"What am I going to do today?" He said out loud again, not wanting to get up. He had changed into his regular yellow jumpsuit, but got tired and flopped back onto his bed.
"I need... No... I don't need it, I just WANT it..." Kazuichi mused. "I want love..."
He was bummed out about what happened a few days ago. He convinced Hajime to try to help him find an excuse for joining the girls on the beach, but something went a little... different.
In a flash of insight, Hajime suggested they wait at the beach house instead of the diner, to make it seem more like their goal was the beach and not the girls. Kazuichi appreciated Hajime's genius, but what they found when they got there wasn't really what they expected.
They found Fuyuhiko, holding a baseball bat, ready to swing at Mahiru.
The two of them yelled "Stop! Don't do it!" at Fuyuhiko, who turned in surprise, but Peko came out of nowhere in a swimsuit. In a flash of what he could only assume was the same insight that told Hajime to go to the beach house, Kazuichi leaped forward before Peko could grab the bat out of Fuyuhiko's hands. He couldn't get to her in time, and she swung.
And hit Kazuichi in the stomach.
Kazuichi leaped to protect Mahiru, and got hit right in the stomach with the bat. It didn't kill him, but it sure hurt like hell. Peko and Mahiru's eyes went wide. Hajime stepped in front of him and said "Mahiru, get him out of here! I'm going to talk with Fuyuhiko and Peko."
Mahiru helped Kazuichi to the diner, letting him lean on her. When they got there, she sat him down in a booth and sat across from him. It was quiet for a bit as Kazuichi groaned in pain, nursing the ice pack Mahiru quickly fetched from the back.
"Why'd you do that?" She asked him. "Why did you... save me? I've been pretty rude to you, and you're in love with Sonia, and... just why?"
Kazuichi groaned as he looked her in the eye. He shrugged. "I don't really know. Maybe I just wanted to follow your advice and be a man for once. Maybe I didn't want another trial. I just... some part of me didn't want you to die... no matter what..."
Mahiru looked out the window. "Why? What makes me so special to you? I never did anything for you. You should've let me die back there... I deserved it..."
"That's bullshit and you know it."
Mahiru looked at him with surprise. "What?"
"Mahiru... You're an amazing girl. You're smart, your talented, you got your head screwed on right, hell, that's one kickass shade of red you have for hair, and you're always looking out for us. You'd be a great mother, one as good as mine. I don't know why she married that piece of shit..."
Mahiru gasped. "You... had father issues?"
Kazuichi nodded. "He beat me. My damn old man beat me for faking sick and skipping school events and such. My mother said he was a nice guy when she married him, but then he betrayed her and became a total jerk. My mother was so nice. I never wanted to betray anybody like my father did to my mother. Humans are just beings that betray others, right? I didn't want that. I wanted to live life the way my mother did. The nice way. She means the world to me."
Mahiru was speechless. "Kazuichi..."
"Yo! Mahiru! You're early! And Kazuichi? What are you doing here?"
Ibuki's voice interrupted the conversation. Mikan was with her. They were coming for the beach trip. Kazuichi explained what happened to them.
After a few hours, everyone gathered at the beach house where Fuyuhiko, Peko, and Mahiru confessed everything. Peko confessed to premeditating a murder and Fuyuhiko and a Mahiru confessed the true motive behind Twilight Syndrome Murder Case. Fuyuhiko and Peko also confessed their true relationship. Even Hiyoko, who woke up in the closet was stunned. She even gave Kazuichi a small pat on the back for saving Mahiru. She told him not to expect another one.
That was only a few days ago. Kazuichi had healed up, but that wasn't the end of what bummed him out. After finding out that Kazuichi planned to crash the girls' beach trip, Sonia officially rejected him instead of just ignoring him.
Now he laid in his bed, staring up at the ceiling, wondering what he was going to do with his life.
When he heard the sound of a slip of paper slip under his door.
He peeked his head up to notice a pink envelope on the floor. He got up and went over to his door. He opened it and looked around but there was nobody there. He closed the door and opened the envelope. Whoever wrote it made the letter smell sweet, like perfume. Kazuichi loved the scent. He read the letter inside.
'Dear Kazuichi,
I heard about what you did a few days ago. I... thought it was really brave of you. What you did... I did some thinking after hearing about it. I never really thought about it, but you're a really decent guy. You're funny, you're free-spirited, you're caring, you actually can be pretty smart and behave at time, and... I kinda developed a crush on you... I'm too nervous to confess, so I thought I'd write you this letter. I don't know what this will accomplish, an that I'm just probably just a girl who's not as good as Sonia to you, but I hope that someday... you'll accept my love.
Sincerely,
Your Secret Admirer'
Kazuichi's eyes were as big as dinner plates. He immediately tucked the letter back into the envelope and stuck it in his desk drawer, the one where he kept all his precious things on the island. His lucky wrench, a photo Mahiru took of the group, and a photo of his mother he managed to bring on the school trip. She was the only family member that truly loved him.
He then ran to the restaurant for breakfast. He sat with Hajime while they ate.
"Yo, Hajime, can we talk?" He asked the boy.
Hajime shrugged. "I guess so. What's up?"
Kazuichi lowered his voice to a whisper. "I got a love letter."
Hajime did a spit take with his orange juice. "Excuse me!?"
The mechanic gave him an annoyed look as he wiped the orange liquid off of his face. "Great job, dumbass. Now everyone's looking at us."
Hajime looked at the others in the restaurant to see those who were there were staring at him. Even Chiaki who was extremely hard to pull out of her games in the morning.
"Hajime, that attack wasn't very effective." Chiaki said before returning to her game.
Everybody else laughed and went back to what they were doing.
"You got lucky, punk." Kazuichi whispered.
Hajime shrugged, taking a bite of his eggs. "Yeah, I know. Anyway, who's this letter from?"
Kazuichi looked down at his plate of pancakes. "No idea. It was anonymous. Signed by a secret admirer."
Hajime chuckled.
Kazuichi glared at him. "Hey, what's so funny?"
"Sorry, it's just funny how not only is there a girl that likes you, but she's too shy to confess her feelings. Does she think you're going to reject her? You're lucky to have Teruteru be attracted to you."
Kazuichi's hand tensed at Teruteru's name. He was one of the few on the island that understood his delusions about girls.
"I'm sorry." Hajime said. "It's only been a week, and it feels like forever. We're never going to forget him or Byakuya, so it's going to be hard to not bring them up like that."
Kazuichi nodded respectfully. "Yeah. I get it."
Hajime finished his eggs. "So, what's your plan?"
"That's what I was going to ask you. What should I do?"
"Are you going to accept her feelings?"
"Not if it's Hiyoko! Or Peko, cause Fuyuhiko will kill me! I need to find who sent me the letter."
Hajime thought for a moment. "Well, let's try process of elimination." He took out a pen and notepad that he apparently had and wrote down the names of all eight girls currently on the island and showed it to Kazuichi. "Now we just have to go down the list and decide who didn't write it. After we narrow it down, we'll have your admirer."
Kazuichi nodded. "Okay. Sounds easy enough."
"Okay, let's start with a simple question. Which girls here have crushes on someone other than you?"
Kazuichi looked a bit crestfallen. "You can cross out Sonia, then. She's already officially rejected me, saying she liked someone else."
Hajime gave him an apologetic look. "I'm sorry, man." He said as he crossed out Sonia's name.
"It's alright. Anyway, we can also cross out Peko probably. I'm pretty sure she has a thing for Fuyuhiko."
Hajime nodded, crossing off another name. "I'm not quite sure about Hiyoko, Mikan, and Chiaki. Then haven't mentioned anyone they like to me."
Kazuichi laughed. "Now YOU'RE the dumb one! Dude, can you not see that Chiaki likes you?"
Hajime's face suddenly did an impression of a tomato. "I have no idea what you mean..." Despite his words, he crossed out Chiaki's name anyway. "What about Akane?"
The two looked across the room to see Akane and Nekomaru sitting at a table stuffing their faces with meat. "Nothing like your favorite meal with your favorite person, right Coach Nekomaru?"
Nekomaru chewed a large piece off of the bone. "Yep! Nothing like the bond between an athlete and their coach, right?"
Hajime and Kazuichi looked at each other.
"Yeah, I'll cross her off too." Hajime said, crossing out Akane's name. "That leaves Hiyoko, Mahiru, Mikan and Ibuki."
"No, can't be Ibuki. She was so obsessed with Byakuya, there's no way she can over him in a week."
"I did talk to her about that, and she said she wasn't really looking for romance anyway." Hajime crossed her off.
"I still seriously doubt it was Hiyoko." Kazuichi said.
"Well, I asked her about if she does like you but acts like she hates you, but she does hate you."
"...Just cross her damn name off."
"Now we're down to two. Mikan and Mahiru."
"Hmm... You sure neither of them mentioned a crush to you at all?"
Hajime shook his head. "Nope. Mikan's too shy and Mahiru's too much of a tsundere."
"Well, Mikan likes it when people are kind to her, yeah?"
Hajime nodded. "Yeah, that's why she and Chiaki and Sonia are such good friends."
"Well, the letter said she liked me because she heard about what I did to save Mahiru, and that wasn't being nice to Mikan, so it has to be Mahiru!"
"..." Hajime was silent.
"What?"
"You're an idiot."
"What!?"
"If you saved Mahiru, then suddenly got a letter that said 'I love you because of what you did for Mahiru', then it's obviously Mahiru!"
"Why didn't I think of that!? You're right! Thanks Hajime!"
Kazuichi got up and left the now annoyed boy alone. Though, he wasn't alone for long, as Fuyuhiko, Peko, and Gundam came over to cheer him up.
Kazuichi went over to the table where Mahiru, Ibuki and Hiyoko were eating breakfast at. The three looked up at him.
"Yo, Kazuichi! You see Hajime spit out that orange juice? HILARIOUS! If I wrote a song about that, it would be called 'Orange Lips, Fine Hips'! Catchy, right?"
Kazuichi looked at Ibuki. "Did... Did you say that Hajime has fine hips?"
"What do you want, loser?" Hiyoko asked, annoyed that he interrupted their conversation.
"Hiyoko, be nice." Mahiru scolded. "What did you want, Kazuichi?"
Kazuichi tugged at the end of his beanie. "Um, I wanted to speak to you, Mahiru. Could you come with me? I'd rather do it alone."
Kazuichi and Mahiru didn't notice Ibuki wiggling her eyebrows at the redhead and giving her a sly smirk, but Hiyoko did. "Hold on, I refuse to allow Mahiru to be alone with an idiot like you!"
"Hiyoko, please... It will only be a few minutes." Mahiru stood up. "Let's go."
Kazuichi and Mahiru walked off as Hiyoko pouted while Ibuki grinned from ear to ear with shipping thoughts.
Kazuichi and Mahiru went into the old lodge. They decided it would best to talk in the dining hall.
"So, what did you want to talk about? Does it involve Hajime spitting orange juice all over your face?"
Kazuichi groaned at the memory. "No. Well, kinda, but that's not I wanted to talk about." He looked down at his feet for a a moment to gather courage to speak. "You were the one to send me that love letter, right?"
The photographer's face turned red enough to match her hair. "W-What!? How'd you know!?"
"Hajime helped me figure it out. It would've been obvious if I wasn't so shocked that somebody loved me..."
The two avoided eye contact for a moment until Mahiru spoke. "What... is your answer?"
"Hmm?"
"Your answer... Will you... be my b-boyfriend?" Mahiru could barely stutter out the word.
Kazuichi blushed as he looked to the side. "...Mahiru... Do you ever do something for a long time and then regret it after you realize how dumb you are?"
She looked at him nervously. "Why...?"
He sighed. "Cause I have. I regret falling for Sonia. For the longest time, I've been chasing after her on this island thinking I had a chance with her. She's way out of my league. She's this princess with all kinds of manners and I thought she was the perfect woman. But I was wrong..." He looked down at his feet.
Mahiru was silent, not knowing what to say.
Kazuichi looked back up at Mahiru and smiled. "But all this time... the perfect woman for me was right in front of me. And I want her to be my girlfriend."
Mahiru squealed as she hugged Kazuichi, who returned it with open arms. In her excitement she gave him a quick kiss.
After realizing what she did, she backed up. "I-I'm sorry. I got really excited, and that was my first kiss, and I'm not a good kisser, and-"
She was shut up by Kazuichi kissing her again. Her eyes fluttered closer as she kissed him back. The two enjoyed the passionate kiss for a moment before pulling apart.
"I don't think you're a bad kisser." He told her with a smile.
