Chapter 4 Deadly Life part 4: Trial

...

...

"WHAT?!" Susie and Kazuichi shouted.

"N-no...this has to be a mistake...it's not me," Mami trembled in her podium.

"But you held Ed's notes. In fact, if I remember correctly, you volunteered to hold his notes," I explained.

"B-but how can I be the culprit?" Mami asked.

"I think we're going to need more evidence to explain why Mami is the culprit, if she is," Hibiki suggested.

"...yeah," I sighed.

Non-Stop Debate: Start!

Truth bullet:Dirty Dress Fabric has been equipped

Mami: Y-you're making a mistake. I can't be the culprit

Susie: I mean she is too nice to commit a murder

Mukuro: So was Ash and look where that got him

Ed: ...

Hibiki: But I mean anyone can be the culprit! It's unfortunate that Mami ends up being Lloyd's killer

Kazuichi: But there's no proof against Mami. No solid proof at least

Leafpool: We all investigated, there has to be something

>Yeah she's right, there has to be something. Something that can prove that Mami is the culprit

[Truth Bullet: Dirty Dress Fabric. Use on there's no proof against Mami.]

[Break!]

"Look, during the investigation, there was the passage that Monokuma opened up for the culprit. In that passage, there was something in it. That something looked like it was ripped from a dress. I couldn't quite tell what the color was but it looked like a dirty pink with yellow on it," I speculated.

"And?" Mami asked.

"Your dress was that color," I replied.

"Ok now that's a big factor to this case," Leafpool noted.

"But I still don't get it. If she is the culprit, why would she kill? What's her reason?" Minami asked.

"That's a good question...," Ed muttered.

"Well maybe she doesn't have a clear reason. I don't know, all I know that she's the closest that we have to getting the culprit," Hibiki pointed out.

"I still refuse that she's the culprit!" Susie shouted.

"Yeah I agree with that!" Kazuichi nodded.

"Kazuichi. Susie. You two were with me when we found the dress fabric...why are you suddenly denying that Mami could be the culprit?" I asked.

"It's impossible to believe that Mami would ever kill anyone!" Susie huffed.

"We can't be split on this. We all have to be sure!" Leafpool wailed.

I heard it!

"Upupupu~ did you say split? You know what that means!!" Monokuma cheered.

"Another Scrum Debate?" Isabelle asked.

"Yep! Aren't you a smart cookie!" Monokuma giggled.

Guess it's another Scrum Debate time. This time we're discussing whether Mami is the culprit or not, I thought.

V.S.

Is Mami the culprit?

No she isn't

Ed

Minami

Mami

Kazuichi

Susie

Yes she is

Tommy

Mukuro

Leafpool

Hibiki

Isabelle

Scrum Debate: Start!

Susie: There's absolutely no way that Mami is the culprit!

[Mukuro!]

Mukuro: Just because you say it is, doesn't make her innocent

Kazuichi: But what about that hint that Monokuma gave to Tommy?

[Isabelle!]

Isabelle: Well Mami isn't necessarily tall per se

Minami: But why the hell would she kill? I don't see a reason to

[Hibiki!]

Hibiki: Well we don't know the clear reason why she would kill but I'm sure that she had a reason to. No one killed for no reason

Mami: But I don't know how to do alchemy. How can I be the c-culprit then?

[I got this!]

Tommy: But you had Ed's notes on you. The party wasn't until late in the evening, you would have had plenty of time to read them

Mami: But some clues don't match up with me!

[Mukuro!]

Mukuro: If we discuss them long enough, they will match to you

Ed: ...

[Leafpool!]

Leafpool: Ed...why aren't you speaking?

THIS IS OUR ANSWER!

[Break!]

"Yeah Ed. You were on the other side of the Scrum Debate. Why didn't you speak at all?" Hibiki asked.

"..."

Ed didn't respond.

"Well it was his notes that caused Lloyd's death albeit indirectly...so he must feel some kind of guilt," Mukuro suggested.

"Ok makes sense to me," Isabelle said.

"So we're all planning on voting for Mami?" Minami asked.

"I guess," Hibiki scratched his head.

"But how can she? Mami lost Daisy and she wouldn't die for Daisy. This doesn't seem right," Susie noted.

"True...I guess we can discuss this a little further," Mukuro said.

Non-Stop Debate: Start!

Truth Bullet: Note has been equipped

Kazuichi: We need to discuss why Mami ended up killing

Susie: Yeah that might put me at ease

Ed: .........ummm.....

Hibiki: Yeah, Ed? You got something to say?

Ed: I don't think there's any reason for her to kill Lloyd

Hibiki: Umm we're literally discussing that right now

Isabelle: Why do you think we're debating on this

Minami: Are you hiding something Ed?

Ed: ...

Leafpool: I don't like that silence

Susie: You and me both

>Is he...hiding something? Wait what was that one thing during the investigation? Ed had it before it landed in someone's hand. But what was it again? Come on, think!

[Truth Bullet: Note. Use on any reason.]

[Break!]

"Ed, you're wrong and you know it. There is a reason for Mami to kill," I said.

"What do you mean I know it?" Ed asked.

"The note. There was a note that was in your pocket. Mukuro, show them," I explained.

"Right," Mukuro took out the note and began to read it out loud.

Once she was done, the whole trial room went quiet.

...

"Wh-what?" Mami asked, scared.

"Didn't Ed say that human transmutation can so-call bring someone back to life?" Susie asked.

"And guess who died beforehand?" Mukuro asked.

"Daisy. Daisy died and Mami was close to her and was sad when she died. So given the opportunity, I think Mami would try a method that could bring someone back to life," Isabelle said.

"Only it didn't work and it ended up killing someone else," I added on.

"..."

"So that's her reason? Oh man, now I feel terrible," Susie groaned.

"It's sad but true. Mami killed Lloyd on accident as an attempt to bring Daisy back to life. Only problem is that once someone is dead, they stay dead," I sighed.

!

I was taken by surprise at this.

Ed was quiet throughout most of the trial so hearing him shout all of a sudden made me jump.

"Good job on figuring out how it worked. But there's no problem! There should have been another body that "represents" Daisy. A failed attempt. Also Mami should have gotten hit with a rebound if she attempted human transmutation. Did you all forget about my arm and leg?!" Ed asked, his voice getting louder and louder.

"...oh...," I said.

I did.

I was so sure about Mami being the culprit, that I forgot about that detail.

"I'll show you how wrong you are!" Ed snapped.

"Guess I'll be fighting you," I muttered.

Rebuttal Showdown: Start!

Truth Blade: Blood away from body has been equipped

Ed: Did you seriously forget about the taboo? I lost a leg and an arm while attempting human transmutation. I risked my life for it and got nothing! Mami also got nothing but she's fine! No loss of a leg, arm, soul or eye sight! The law of equivalent exchange is the basic law of alchemy. It cannot be broken. Not ever!

[Advance!]

Tommy: I...I did forget. But how the hell are we suppose to know about that law? We know nothing of alchemy. I know human transmutation is a touchy subject for you and I don't want to fight you like this. I really don't. I just...I just don't want to die if we get this wrong

Ed: Regardless of that, we're all going to die if this game is kept up. But that's not what we're discussing about. Lloyd's body is expected of something from human transmutation. All mangled up and bloody. But Mami hasn't lost anything and she should have if she really did do human transmutation to bring Daisy back. That's what the law is and it cannot be broken!

>Ed sounds so sure of himself here. I think the scary part is that he knows what he is saying. I guess geniuses do exists out there. But I think there's one thing that Ed didn't count on and I need to find it so I can prove him wrong.

[Truth Blade: Blood away from body. Use on bloody.]

[Break!]

"Lloyd's body is all mangled up that we couldn't tell that it was him but bloody? I quite doubt it since there wasn't that much. Well not that much what I expected," I explained.

"The hell do you mean?" Ed asked.

"Maybe this was a failed attempt where Mami didn't get affected but instead Lloyd did. Remember that green light when the transmutation was happening during the party. Or I at least assumed it was. Mami was up on the stage. She caused it but didn't activate it. Lloyd did and I think that's why she didn't lose anything," I explained.

"I-what?" Ed was confused.

"Then again, that's all just a theory. I don't know what truly happened," I said.

"Yeah this is getting too smarty for me. Dumb it down for me please?" Susie asked.

"Basically Lloyd lost something and Mami didn't. But she caused the transmutation by being on the stage," Mukuro explained.

"So Mami is the culprit but she didn't activate her murder weapon?" Minami asked.

"Well take it as this. Say someone dies from a forest fire that someone created. That person died from the fumes made from the flames. Who do you blame? The fire or the person who made the forest fire?" Leafpool asked.

...

Susie stayed quiet as she thought about it.

"But now I have a question. If Mami was on the stage during the time Lloyd was murdered, how she was able to activate the transmutation?" Kazuichi asked.

"Ah crap! That's a roadblock," I sighed.

"I know! Tommy remember what I showed you during the investigation?" Leafpool asked.

"Heeh?"

"Don't tell me you forgot? You really have short term memory," Leafpool said.

"Don't blame me," I hugged myself.

Maybe Leafpool can help! I'll have to hear her out on this! I thought.

Logic Refresh

Truth bullets: Bloody paw prints, Different creatures, Notes in someone's hands

Leafpool: I showed you this during the investigation

Leafpool: Something odd and we haven't seen this beforehand

Leafpool: Sure we all have seen this if you were outside but we're not outside

Leafpool: Mami must have gotten help from something or someone

Leafpool: Someone we haven't seen before

Leafpool: They had blood on them so they were most likely involved with the murder

-Something odd
-We all have seen this
-Gotten help
-haven't seen before
-Blood on them

Truth bullet selected —>Bloody Paw prints

[Break!]

"Oh sh*t! You mean the bloody paw prints that you found. They looked like cats," I said.

Leafpool nodded.

"Cats? I thought the only cat here is Leafpool. She's not involved with the murder is she?" Kazuichi asked.

"No she's not. The paw prints are too small to be hers and too cat like to be Pikachu's or Monokuma's. I think Leafpool has a point, someone we haven't seen before. There are other animals here, aren't they, Monokuma?" I asked.

"Guilty as charged! I just couldn't have them be here because they'll ruin my cuddly spotlight! I could only allow two furry animals to be here," Monokuma explained.

"So Mami had the help of other animals most likely cats. But that begs the question, how and why?" Minami asked.

"Well first of all, what kind of cats are they?" Mukuro asked.

...

Mami was quiet and she was quiet since Ed's rebuttal.

...

"Umm Mami can you speak up please?" Hibiki asked.

...

"I don't think that she wants to talk," Isabelle noted.

...

"Aliens...they're alien cats," Mami muttered.

"Ayo what the f*ck?!" Susie cried.

"Aliens don't exist...do they?" Kazuichi asked.

"Neither do a talking cat, talking dog, whatever Susie is, a talking, moving skeleton, Pokémon, this whole a*s game! Alien cats are probably the least of our worries," Minami pointed out.

"So why were they involved?" Mukuro asked.

...

Mami didn't speak up.

She was too busy fiddling with her fingers.

"Wait, since they're alien cats, do you reckon that they have different technology than us? Like they could have been the ones to help Mami crack the code for human transmutation?" I asked.

"That's not so far-fetched Bandaid boy," Susie replied.

Truth bullet selected —>Different creatures

I got it!

"We haven't seen them before and Mami did drop the bombshell that they were aliens so I guess Susie has a point that it's not so far-fetched," I said.

"They could help Mami out with that and why would they help her? Maybe they have been here since the beginning or Mami told them about Daisy," Mukuro said.

"True but...I get that they are aliens but it took my brother and I years to learn alchemy and even longer for the formula. How can they know how to use alchemy in a day?" Ed asked.

"Yeah true. How can they know?" Minami agreed.

I wonder if Mami's item has to do with this? I wondered.

C. Fanfiction logic

[Good!]

Question 3.

How could they have know about human transmutation?

[A. Ed's notes]

B. Subscribing to Technoblade

C. A third party told them

[Good!]

Answer key: B.A.A

This is It!

[Break!]

"Didn't we already established that these were aliens? So they must have their own sets of technology in order to learn something that must take years," I explained.

"Damn! You think they can help me with math?" Susie asked.

"Susie, I don't think this is the time to joke around," Leafpool noted.

"So that's how it was done. Aliens and alchemy, god I'm going to need to sleep this off. This is getting too wonky for me, man," Hibiki sighed.

"Don't look at me. I don't make the murder cases," I said.

"Hey Mami, aren't you going to speak on your defense? Well I guess there's not much to say about but we would love to hear your side of the story," Kazuichi asked.

...

"Well I guess this is the end," Mukuro said.

...

"Mami...," Ed spoke up and she looked at him.

"It's all over now. You need to tell them the truth or at least confirm what they said," he explained.

...

Mami took a deep breath and said, "Now I know that this is going to sound crazy since you mainly cracked the case but...really? Why do you assume that it was alien technology that helped me kill Lloyd? D-do you really have any proof?"

"I thought we already explained stuff!" Susie sighed.

"Well I guess this is her final attempt to prove that she's not the culprit before we vote," Isabelle noted.

"..."

"Can we...at least talk this out a little longer? P-please?" Mami asked.

"..."

Mami looked frightened and she was trembling in place.

This wasn't the first time that I thought why are we here?

Why do we have to go along with this killing game?

It's not fair.

Not fair to them, not fair to her, ...not fair to me.

"Mami...I'll hear you out. I'll hear what you have to say," I said.

"O-ok," Mami continued to shake.

Argument Adamant

>I'm scared

>I don't want to die!

>Am I really the culprit?

>Where's your proof that alien cats helped me?

>I just wanted to carry Ed's notes that's all

>I didn't want to kill

>What would happen if you lost someone you're close to??

>N-No

[Break!]

>D-do you really hate me that much?

>How can I be the culprit?

>Wouldn't you bring someone back to life if you were given that chance

>I'm not stupid

>I'm scared of dying!

>Please understand what I'm going through

[Break!]

>I DON'T WANT TO DIE

>I DON'T WANT TO DIE!

>DAISY WAS SO NICE OF COURSE I WOULD WANT TO BRING HER BACK

>I DIDNT MEAN TO

>DONT HURT MY FRIENDS TOO!

>PLEASE DONT KILL ME

>PLEASE DONT KILL ME

>PLEASE DONT KILL ME

>IM SORRY!!!

[Break!]

Finishing Blow!

"Where's your proof that alien cats helped me?"

>They had
>the notes
>and different
>technology

ITS THE END!

[Break!]

"We already established about the aliens having different technology. So combined that with Ed's alchemy notes, it's not much of a stretch to say that they have figured this out and help you try to bring Daisy back to life but ended up killing Lloyd instead," I explained.

"So them having different technology equals them having to master a complicated thing and managed to kill someone. Hey Monokuma, is that even allowed?" Susie asked.

"Well they don't have the technology to get out. I made sure of it but the technology to kill? I gave them a free pass on this," Monokuma grinned.

"So you wouldn't allow anything unless it's to kill huh?" Mukuro asked.

"Right on the money, Ms.Boring!" Monokuma cheered.

"You motherf*cker!" Ed snapped.

"I don't f*ck any mothers I can assure you that!" Monokuma said.

"That's not what I...you're sick in the head," Ed grumbled.

"Enough about squabbles with Monokuma, should we vote now?" Kazuichi asked.

"I think we need a run down of the case so we can be sure on our votes," Leafpool said.

I nodded to show that I agreed with her.

"This is...," I gulped, "the truth of the case."

Closing Argument

We all got our motives which triggered a memory in us. Ed got his alchemy notes which triggered his memory on trying to bring his mother back to life. He didn't want his notes so between the time that we got our motives and when he and the culprit met up with me in the music room, Ed gave his notes to the culprit. He didn't know that the culprit was planning on using them. At least, not then and there.

While the three of us were in the music room, Monokuma came and told us about the party. With everyone gathered together, the culprit couldn't have attempted a murder right away but then after leaving the music room, the culprit must have confined their alien cat companions about Ed's notes and during the time that we were getting ready for the party, the cats figured out how to use human transmutation.

Monokuma found out but let them have a free pass since they're using Ed's notes to kill somebody. Or so, he guessed and gave them free access to a secret passage under the ballroom. There, the culprit and cats set up the necessary steps for human transmutation although they couldn't activate it right now.

The culprit went to the party with the rest of us but under the impression that the alchemy wouldn't activate until the cats told her otherwise. Lloyd, the victim, caught wind about Ed's notes and what they truly contained. He confronted Ed about it but Ed wasn't happy about this confrontation. He was especially angry when Lloyd points out that if someone uses his notes, someone's blood would be on his hands either directly or indirectly. Ed got pissed and stormed off. Lloyd also left and went to the ballroom and didn't stay long.

He stayed long enough to give some people an alibi, however before leaving. He found his way to the passage and saw the set up there. Lloyd must have realized that this was going to be used to kill but it was too late. The circle was activated while Mami was singing and Lloyd was caught in the middle of it all. Up in the ballroom, Mami was singing on top of the makeshift stage which was most notably on top of where the circle is. We all saw the blue light before it was overshadowed by a green one. A select few of us went down after it was considered safe by Monokuma and we saw a dead body. Ed investigated to conclude that the dead body was Lloyd.

Honestly this was a complicated case and we wouldn't have gotten the culprit if things didn't work the way they did.

And I'm sad to say that our culprit is none other than the Ultimate Popstar, Creamy Mami.

[Break!]

"And that...that's all I have to say," I explained.

"..."

"I think you explained it well," Leafpool assured me.

I hugged myself nervously.

Now here comes the most stressful part. Voting, I thought.

"It's time to vote," Hibiki muttered.

"That's right! Cast your votes in now!" Monokuma said.

I, hesitantly, pressed on Mami's picture when the screens appeared.

And now...we wait.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Everyone has voted! Now, let us see if you got it right and I'll execute the blacken or if you got it wrong and I'll execute everyone BUT the blacken," Monokuma cheered.
A pachinko machine appeared and Monokuma pulled down the lever down.
Damn pachinko machines. Remind me to never gamble in my life.
The slots were spinning and spinning.
So much so that I felt dizzy just watching them spin.
After what felt like a while, the slots stopped. All three of them were in Mami's face and a horn of celebration went off.
A bunch of pounds, yen and quarters came out of the machine.
We voted right.
We did it.
Class Trial: End!
A/N: about time am I right?
I'm so close to the end, I can almost taste it!
Thanks for the support on this, I really do appreciate it ^^
Post Trial, Execution and Post Execution will be coming out soon so watch out for that and then Chapter 4 will be officially done!
Chapter 5 will be on its way...after my very short break from working on Eclipse. I do this whenever I finish a chapter so don't worry it won't be long!
Also I got a special surprise for anyone who is into Fanganronpas and MCYT's. But you're going to have to wait for it!
