Day 3: Flower Language/School
I REAALLY wanted to do this with little details, but . . . When I saw the prompt, I had to go nuts. So, if you don't know what "Flower Language" is, I'll explain!
Historically, back in the early Victorian era, it was seen as rude or disrespectful for couples to flirt in public places, especially depending on who the couples were. (Like if the couples families didn't want them to be together or something.) So, to keep relationships secret, people would send each other bouquets of flowers, and depending on what flower or color they were, the bouquet would hold a secret message. Over time, people lost the meaning of those flowers, and now everyone just gives each other flowers because, "they're pretty!" Which is valid, buuuut, I really like the original meanings of these flowers.
Here's a small image that gives the general idea, but obviously there are TONS to look into. (Again, another really good idea for a fan fic . . . And one that I won't write.):
So, the flowers in Shuichi's are Blue Hyacinths, Cornflower, and A White Lily. It says the meanings in the drawing, so I won't tell you, but I will tell you some fun facts! Liiike, I gave the blue in Shuichi's Hyacinths a purple tint, because purple hyacinths communicate the message: "Sorrow, Im sorry. Please forgive me."
The reason I did this is because of Shuichi's personality and how he was in the killing game. He always felt bad for finding the killers . . . Especially in the first trial. (Additionally, Pink Hyacinths have the meaning of "play," ((I shoulda put them in Kokichi's drawing!!))and White Hyacinths are for general Purity and innocence. If you put it in a bouquet, it's communicates, "I'm praying for you." However, on the other hand, Yellow Hyacinths are for Jealousy. In fact, most yellow flowers stand for bad things. Golden poppy's stand for the dead, yellow Carnations are for disdain, yellow Chrysanthemums are for slighted love(playing with someone's heart for simple humor), marigolds are uneasiness. . . It's quite interesting, since we nowadays think of yellow as sunshine and day time . . . . But that's the thing.
Couples in the old days used to have to stay in the dark. Meeting up late at night instead of the day for leisure times and dates. So maybe that's a part of it? A fear of what others would think in the day. . . Anyway!)
There's nothing else to say about Shuichi, it looks nice.
But Kokichi! He has Apple Blossoms, Poppy's and Honeysuckles! Poppy's in general stand for Eternal sleep, Oblivion, and Imagination. (Call SpongeBob—) But on their own and separately, red ones are for pleasure, and white ones are for Consolation, which I think fits my head canons for him. However!
The message they send out to couples when paired together is actually "I am not for free." This specifically meaning "I'm high maintenance," or "You may suffer being with me," "I won't come without a price to pay," whatever. These are all different variations and I think it . . . Fits well, I think.
But yeah. If you've ever wanted to feel warm and fuzzy, just . . . Look up old flower meanings. It's actually a real study! Floriography!! It's really cool, but cute at the same time! Personally . . . One of my favorites of the definitions is the white clover. Which is "think of me."
Another good one is, Cedar Leaf: "I live for thee."
Or (Lesser) Celandine: "Joys to come."
Oooor, Coronella: "Success crown your wishes."
It's funny, but Cranberries actually have the meaning: "Cure for heartache."(I suppose granny was right.)
American Cowslip: (Divine beauty) "You are my Divinity."
Currant: "Thy Frown will kill me. . ."
Garden Daisy: "I share your sentiments."
Darnel (Ray grass): Vice
Dew plant: A Serenade
Eglantine (Sweetbrier): "I wound to heal you."("I will be harmed to save you.")
Evergreen thorn: "Solace in Adversity"
Fennel is: "Worthy of all praise."
Can you imagine, being somebody, some person, sittin around in the Victorian era, having a SHIT DAY, and then someone hands you a fuckin sprig of fennel, (saying it's from an unknown person, 👀) and suddenly you feel like the fuckin Duke/Duchess/Monarch of the entire fuckin country??
That's so nice. I want that. But nah, we just think flowers are pretty now . . . Just pretty things . . .
Just . . . Damn . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Oh!
Uhhhhhh, thank you for listening to Bori's Flower TedTalk. I'm sorry I wrote so much. Once again, things got away from me, as they always do.
I'll leave you be. I still have one more thing to draw anyway! Buh-bye! See you in an hour or more. . .
