Artificial Intelligence (Short Story)

The mansion was empty, and dark, as all lights had been turned off. Everyone was in their rooms, getting an uneasy night's sleep. Yesterday, two people had died already in this twisted game. Only fourteen people were remaining. Only thirteen were actually in bed.

The houseguest quietly made his way down the hall from his room, using a very faint purple orb as a light source. With all the lights turned out for the night in this mansion, and no windows, the place was pitch black.

He stopped when he reached a door, and quietly pushed it open. He shut the door behind him slowly, and his head snapped in the direction of some bookshelves on the left. Nothing was there.

Uneasily, he turned to the right corner of the room, where more bookshelves were surrounding an enchantment table. Distinguishing his purple orb of faint light, he touched the table, and the four diamonds on each corner began to glow with a faint purple light. The light cast a lavender glow on the face of Seto and the bookshelves, but didn't glow enough to light the entire room, which was good...

Seto sighed with relief. As long as he had been in this mansion, most of his magical energy had been suspiciously drained. This enchantment table, which seemed to have the most magical energy in the house, was the perfect place to recharge his magic just enough to get through another day.

Seto was a sorcerer, and he therefore had a large magical aura that was easy to control with magic. If drained of magic, which is what had been the case, he could slowly regenerate the energy once again, like how one could regenerate blood slowly if it is lost. But Seto couldn't do that fast enough; this table, with a magical aura of its own, easily could.

Seto had been relieved to find the table when he had awoken here, because now he could finally finish a project he'd been meaning to do, before being sent to the mansion. It was funny; his memory had been wiped clear of all his history before this mansion, but his thoughts and knowledge unrelated to anything of the past had stayed, and the project in Seto's mind had survived the odd memory wipe as well. And tonight would be the perfect night to finally get it up and running, after real danger had been exposed in the house after the first murder. Even better, in a guilty way, the murder had taken place in this very room, so everyone would probably be steering clear of this room for a while.

Seto decided that he had taken enough magical energy from the table, and took his hand off. The diamond's light faded, and he was in total darkness once more.

Frowning to himself in the dark, Seto began to work in his mind. Full concentration was needed, and all Seto had to do was focus on himself and his goal. He took a deep breath and touched the table once more, and almost instantly fell unconscious.

≪≫

Some time later, Seto blinked his eyes open to see nothing new, just more darkness. There was no way to tell how much time had passed, but the lights were still off, so it must still be night, which was good.

He felt his arms and face lying on the surface of the table, and he carefully stood up, brushing himself off. Despite being unconscious for an estimated couple of hours, Seto still felt extremely tired-while he was knocked out, the little magic he had was being drained to the table for his project. Which was good. The magic had at least been taken in, but did the enchantment actually work?

Seto waited for the table to light up on its own, but it never did. After a couple heartbeats, Seto whispered faintly, "Hello?"

Almost instantly, the diamonds began to glow, without Seto touching it. Four lavender beams shot out of each diamond at forty-five degree angles, meeting together above the book on the table. Slowly, a small figure began to form in the middle of the beams, and eventually it took the shape of a small, 2-D, translucent purple Seto.

"Hello, Master!" It said cheerfully, in a voice that sounded exactly like Seto's, except slightly higher in pitch, as if it was Seto's voice when he was a year or two younger, and the voice was slightly muffled. The voice matched the exact volume that Seto had whispered in.

Seto blinked in happy surprise. "Master?" He echoed with a grin, careful to keep his voice down.

The small Seto nodded. "Yes! You created me, right, Master? You look just like me!"

Seto chuckled. "Yes, that's right. And you can call me Seto."

"Okay, Master!" It replied obediently.

Seto frowned. Was there something wrong with the enchantment? "No, don't call me Master," He said slowly. "Call me Seto. Seh-to."

"Yes, Master." The AI said with another obedient nod.

Seto thought for a moment. "Um, can you call me Master Seto?"

"Of course, Master Seto!"

Seto sighed. That was good enough.

The small Seto frowned. "Master Seto, what is my name?"

Seto raised his eyebrows. "Your name?"

The AI nodded with a small grin. "Yes, my name. You have one, your name is Master Seto. What is the name you call me?"

"Hm," Seto said, and looked the small enchantment up and down. "How about...let's call you AlterSorcerer?"

"AlterSorcerer!" The AI repeated. "That is my name. You'll call me that?"

Seto nodded with a grin. "Yep. I'll call you AlterSorcerer."

Seto was already taking pride in AlterSorcerer. His project idea had originally been of a life-sized copy of himself, that was composed completely of self-sufficient magic, but under the conditions, this was the best thing he could do. AlterSorcerer was a piece of Seto's magic that would gain power from that of the table as its own sufficient intelligence, and it was designed to learn. That had already been clearly displayed-AlterSorcerer had instantly been able to match Seto's voice volume, had noticed that him and Seto looked alike, seemed to understand that Seto had created him, and was already noticeably learning from Seto's speech, by using the contraction "You'll".

AlterSorcerer seemed to be working perfectly fine, besides Seto not being able to get him to call him just Seto. That wasn't a huge problem, though. AlterSorcerer still would and could be a huge help to Seto in his situation.

"Are you ready for a job?" He asked AlterSorcerer with a small grin.

AlterSorcerer's eyes widened excitedly. "A job? Yes, Master Seto!"

Seto nodded, and pointed to the books surrounding them. "This Enchantment Table soaks in the information from these books, see? You're part of this table, so you have access to these books. Do you understand?"

Seto could see AlterSorcerer pausing to take the information in. "Yes," He replied with a nod.

"Can you search the books for information?" Seto asked.

AlterSorcerer nodded happily, then frowned. "What information do I search for?"

Seto paused. He hadn't really thought about that. "Um...search for information on Herobrine's Mansion. Can you do that?"

"Herobrine's Mansion," AlterSorcerer repeated matter-of-factly. "Yes, I will search the books for information on Herobrine's Mansion. I'll show you anything that I find, Master Seto!"

Seto nodded with a grin. "Good. I'll be back later. Do not appear until then, but continue to search. You are only allowed to appear when I come, or if...if you don't see me in a while," He added uneasily.

He didn't plan on killing anyone, especially with AlterSorcerer on his side to help him solve this problem in a non-violent way, but others may decide to murder...and Notch forbid anything happened to him, he would probably like to have AlterSorcerer be of service to the others. Why put all that magic go to waste? Also...he felt a strange sense of guilt leaving AlterSorcerer alone.

AlterSorcerer nodded. "Yes, Master Seto. I'll start to look through the books now."

Seto smiled as the AI disappeared. A feeling of some small safety washed over him, and he headed back to bed knowing that tonight he could get a good night's sleep.
