) The university of Michigan is a magical place. Since its opening in 1817, it's been a dream college for thousands of people across the world. Between its excellent research, learning, and teaching opportunities and sports opportunities, the school has been a top choice for a reason. Aside from the opportunities it provides, a lot of students enjoy the experiences and views the campus offers. The campus gives students a view of the world and its history, and the large attendance allows students to make friends all around campus.
For most families, they want their child to attend college for academics. Although, athletics has started to play a bigger role in attending college. The university of Michigan is the one college where they always have school spirit and enthusiasm, especially when it comes to sports. Their football and hockey programs have been known as the best of the best for years, but things can come crumbling down in an instant. And the hockey and football programs know that better than anyone.
For years it's been the same ending for the programs. They make it through their seasons with winning records but eventually lose at some point during the playoffs. For the hockey program, they've won the national championship 9 times, which is more than any other program. But they've had multiple seasons where they fall short and end in disappointment, like the 21-22 season where they fell short in the semifinal. The 22-33 was going to be different though, they were going to make it different. If only they knew going in that the next season would be just like the rest, the only different was they would have someone by their side through it all.

) Madeleine Wilson always thought she had the perfect family growing up. Her parents had started a youtube channel when her little sister was just 2 years old, and everything was perfect. They would film their daily lives and share vlogs for people to watch on Youtube. The two girls did gymnastics and acrobatics, eventually starting their own individual channels. Their older brother would play baseball and hockey with his best friend, the duo spending every second of every day together. Their channel started to grow more and more everyday and they eventually started to do more than just vlogs, including challenges and games into their filming. The kids friends would join them and they all eventually had names in the social media industry. But things don't last forever. Madeleine was at gymnastics when she had gotten the news. There had been an accident and she had to leave gymnastics immediately. Her mom picked her up and she instantly realized something was wrong. She had tears streaming down her face as she drove quickly to what Madeleine assumed was the hospital. And when they arrived, it was pure chaos.
She quickly took notice of everyone that was in the hospital waiting room. All of the parents of the players for her brothers hockey team sat in the waiting room. Most were sobbing and holding each other. Maddie just looked at her mom is panic as she waited for someone to tell her what had happened and why everyone was crying. The team had been returning from a tournament in Canada that evening, and Maddie was starting to realize that there really had been an accident. It wasn't until 2 hours later that doctors started to come out and update the parents about the status of their child. Most had broke down in tears and screams after the doctor told them and Maddie felt her stomach twist as she watched more doctors come out to update parents. She couldn't lose her brother. She couldn't lose her best friends. She needed Caleb and Rutger. When a doctor approached the Wilson family, Maddie could instantly tell that her brother wasn't okay. The doctor had told them that he had suffered an internal decapitation and that they did everything they could but there was too much damage. Everything fell apart in that moment. She was so confused on how her older brother could just be gone. She had just talked to him hours prior and now she would never talk to him again.
It was just moments later that Maddie finally came to her senses. Her parents were crying and comforting each other, her younger sister being held by her father. She looked around the waiting room, looking for Jim and Cindy Mcgroarty. When she found them, she noticed how they weren't screaming and crying like all of the other parents. They were crying but in a way that told Maddie that Rutger wasn't dead like all of the other boys. Like her brother. And it wasn't until a few days after, when the news finally broke to the Lincoln community that she realized. Rutger had been the only survivor. He was still in critical condition and had a long road to recovery but he was alive. And oddly that brought her comfort. Her best friend was still alive and she could still somehow live her life. It wasn't until three long weeks that she returned to gymnastics and her family carried on with their vlogs. They weren't going to but they felt like it was important to carry on Caleb's legacy. To carry on the legacy of all of those kids. So they did just that. The Wilson family continued to film their lives, sharing the story of their lost one and how much life he still had. They shared the lives of their daughters as they grew up doing gymnastics. They shared everything because that's what Caleb would have wanted.
After several very long and difficult years, Maddie finally moved on with her dream. She loved living in Lincoln, taking care of her family and her best friends. But she wanted a different view. She wanted to see how different the world was. So she applied to her dream college, The University of Michigan, with her best friend and not long after, was moving there. She had visited the college multiple times before with her brother and the Mcgroarty family. But nothing felt like it did then. It felt like everything that had been thrown at her for the last decade of her life was finally gone and she was finally able to breathe. She was finally able to have a happy life with her best friends and boyfriend. But things never end well for Madeleine Wilson. And the moment the media started getting involved in her relationship, she knew that nothing with Rutger would ever be the same again. Just like it was all those years ago.
( â
) Rutger Mcgroarty thought he had a pretty good life. His parents had never fallen out of love and his siblings were always close to him. He spent his entire life in a suburb of Lincoln, Nebraska and he never wanted to leave. That was until his life started to fall apart. For years, everything had been perfectly fine. He would spend most of his days with his best friends, Caleb and Madeleine Wilson. He would play hockey and baseball with Caleb and would tumble with Maddie. He was in most of their videos and was around the Wilson family 24/7. But eventually, everything came crumbling down. Rutger hadn't expected the impact. He was sitting next to Caleb and they were just talking about the challenge video they were going to be filming in just a few days. The tournament had just finished hours prior and the whole team was still on the 1st place high. So when the sound of metal on metal sounded through the bus before he was turning and flipping, no one was prepared. Most of the boys had been sitting in uncomfortable and unsafe positions, Rutger being the only one that had been sitting normally. When he felt his head make contact with the window, he grunted in pain before he felt his body being thrown. The bus started to flip and all he saw was glass flying everywhere and the bloody screams of all of his teammates.
When he finally came to again, he felt blood dripping down his neck. He quickly looked around for his teammates and best friends. When he saw Caleb, he noticed the blood coming from his head and how he wasn't moving the rest of his body. Dizzy and exhausted, Rutger slowly pushed himself to Caleb. Not even noticing the pain he felt in his stomach, arm, and head. His entire focus was Caleb. The fear he felt when he finally saw Caleb was indescribable. Caleb wasn't moving but the fear he was feeling was evident as he looked up at Rutger with wide eyes. Rutger quickly removed his team jacket and pressed it to Caleb's head, trying to stop the bleeding. It was rapid and he didn't know what else to do. The only thing he could hear was the screaming and crying of his teammates. His focus was still entirely on Caleb though, he knew that his friend was likely paralyzed by the fact that he still hadn't moved. And it wasn't long before he had lost unconsciousness. That had been when Rutger broke down in tears, finally taking in the scene. He could see blood and glass everywhere, his teammates bodies scattered across the inside and outside of the bus. There was lots of screaming and crying but Rutger didn't know where it was coming from. He just heard it everywhere. And it didn't take long for Rutger to also lose consciousness, the blood loss and pain finally getting to him.
The next time Rutger woke up, he had zero memory of what happened. He didn't know where he was and was panicked. A tube was down his throat and he couldn't speak, which only made him panic more. He grabbed and grabbed at the tube until someone was rushing into the room to stop him. He felt his hands shake as the tube was removed from his throat. The doctors were staring at him in amazement as they leaned him up on the bed, allowing him to finally see where he was. Tears quickly fell as he made eye contact with his family. He still didn't remember what happened and he was scared. Something had happened to him. Had he been hurt in a hockey accident? Where was Caleb? He had so many questions. But his parents only broke down in tears when he asked. Which only made him more scared. It wasn't that long after that he finally met his doctor, who explained in depth what had happened. But it didn't matter what he said, Rutger didn't want to believe it. He was in a bus accident on his way home from the tournament, and he had suffered massive injuries. He suffered a broken clavicle and wrist, multiple rib fractures, a collapsed lung, internal bleeding, a facial fracture, and a grade 3 concussion. And still nothing made sense. How had things changed so fast? How long had it been?
It wasn't until after a few days of being in the hospital that Rutger realized. Caleb didn't make it. Nor did any of his teammates. Even his coaches died. Everything moved slowly when his parents finally told him. It was already moving slow because of his concussion but when his parents told him that they were gone, everything just fell apart. He thought he had done enough to keep Caleb alive. He didn't hear his parent's explanation of everything. He just heard "Caleb", "Internal Decapitation", "there was nothing anyone could do", "you were the only survivor". Everything else was blocked out as he stared blankly at the wall across from him. His vision was blurry and he couldn't process anything. Months had passed and Rutger was finally moving forward. He hadn't touched a hockey stick or left his house in months. Everything just felt pointless. His best friends were dead, there was no point in going forward. But a brunette haired girl soon changed his mind. And eventually, he followed her to their dream college. Far away from the place that tore his life apart. Away from the nightmare that was Rutger Mcgroarty's life. But when the media catches ahold of his relationship, he realizes that nothing would ever be the same with Maddie. Just like it had been all those years ago.
( â
) Madeleine and Rutger were best friends from the minute they met. Their parents had been best friends, making them best friends instantly. And it was the same for their siblings. Caleb and Molly were best friends from the moment they first saw each other. Everything about the Wilson and Mcgroarty families being friends just made sense. But eventually, things weren't the same anymore. When there's a tragedy, most people distance from everyone they know. Losing a child or any family member is one of the worst things for anyone to experience. And sadly, the Wilson family couldn't handle it. They locked themselves away in their house until they had to leave, the grief overpowering every other emotion. Although, Maddie was the only one that didn't let her grief overpower everything else. She might have lost her brother but her best friend was still fighting and she wasn't going to leave him. So Maddie stayed by his side until he woke up, only leaving when her parents told her to come home. It wasn't long after he woke up though that everything between them changed. He was cold and emotionless every time Maddie was there, and maybe he was that way all of the time. Maddie didn't know but she stayed away. She knew he was struggling and she didn't want to cause any further harm.
Eventually, she was able to convince him to move forward. For Caleb and for everyone else that didn't survive the bus accident. The duo was inseparable after that. They spent every single day together, tumbling and playing hockey all of the time. And by the time they were in their freshman year, they were dating. Everything between them was perfect. They argued at times, mostly when Rutger was upset or stressed. But they both knew that it was necessary to have conflict within a relationship to keep it going and strong. They made sure to talk about all of their feelings and problems, not wanting to keep anything in and cause a blow up. And everything was great, until they were going to college. The media at that point knew about the duo, they knew they were together and happy. But when Rutgers fans get involved and the media starts to turn toxic, everything comes crumbling down. And they both knew that nothing would ever be the same. They were dancing with their hands tied and that was a dangerous game.
