IV. THE POLICE OUTSIDE MUNSON'S TRAILER

CHAPTER FOUR
↳ the police outside munson's trailer

⭒☆━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━☆⭒

Laurie Fisher had a particular way of waking up. Living alone at a trailer park essentially gave the girl unlimited opportunities to do whatever she pleased at whatever time of the day (unless she had work). Her boss had decided to give her a few days off since he had new employees he wanted to throw on some harsher shifts. While Laurie didn't think that was necessary, she didn't complain when it meant she could wake up and do whatever she wanted as late as she wanted. She could be watching a film at 4am and no one would bat an eye because at a trailer park, no one cared about the child in the trailer next door.

So, this morning, Laurie simply decided to play ABBA music as loudly as her record player allowed her to, making breakfast from some bacon and eggs she had left in her fridge. She was humming along to Gonna Sing You My Lovesong, swaying her hips to the music while making sure not to accidentally burn herself on the stove like she had done many times before.

After finally making her cup of coffee, Laurie didn't expect to hear Police sirens loudly blast throughout the trailer park. It wasn't uncommon to hear them from the distance, though today they sounded closer than they had ever been before. Curiously, the girl threw on a pink dressing gown and some white slippers, tying the dressing gown around her figure and opening the curtain slightly. She nervously peered forward, seeing the police exactly where Eddie's house was.

She went pale.

What the fuck happened?

Immediately, she rushed outside, standing by the porch with a nervous look on her face. From another trailer, she could see Max also curiously looking alongside her mother. The pair exchanged a look of shock, Max mouthing a 'what happened?' to which Laurie simply shrugged. Laurie stayed by her front door, careful not to interfere with whatever the police were investigating. However, she watched as Max walked closer and closer towards the scene, peering in before getting stopped by police. The red haired girl turned and ran, not before gesturing to Laurie that she was going to call her.

Before Max could go in, Laurie gestured for the girl to call her. The girl nodded and Laurie went back inside.

Laurie sat patiently by the phone, picking it up immediately once it rang. "Hey."

"Hey." Max answered, clearly tired from the grogginess in her voice. "Do you know what happened?"

"Believe me, I just woke up. I have no clue." Laurie replied, holding the phone to her ear with her shoulder while pouring some coffee. "Do you think something bad has happened?"

Max instantly replied. "I mean, why would they be so adamant we stay inside?" Laurie could tell she wasn't telling her everything, but she knew better than to pry for information from Max.

"Touché." Laurie commented, taking a sip of her coffee and exhaling. "So, what are we going to even do now? Somethings happened literally by our places, the police are here and some shit has gone down. I think that means we're fucked."

"You think?"

"It's either we're fucked or we're fucked. Not much to choose from really." Laurie sneezed and then sneezed again. She hated when she sneezed.

"You okay?"

"Yeah, I just sneeze a lot." She sniffled, wiping her nose. "Give me ten minutes, I really need a shower."

Before Laurie could put down the phone, Max spoke up once more, "Laurie, listen," Max began and Laurie could immediately tell she was nervous. "I don't want to scare you, but I saw the body. It-It-"

Max hesitated, her stuttered response worrying Laurie, and so Laurie stopped her, "what? Max, who did you see?" She lightly pressed the girl into giving an explanation, her stomach twisting and turning with sudden anxiety. Max didn't respond immediately, making Laurie worry even more. "Hello? Max?"

"I think- I think I saw Chrissy Cunningham's body." Laurie went quiet almost instantly, though she let out a small gasp. "Hello? Laurie? You okay?"

The blonde swallowed a lump that was already forming in her throat. "Yeah-I-uh- come to my trailer in about fifteen minutes. Please?"

The moment she put down the phone, Laurie felt herself slide down the wall, her mouth wide open and her shoulders already quivering. She swallowed, her left hand shakily reaching up and covering her mouth.

Not Chrissy.

Anyone but Chrissy.

She rushed to the bathroom, crouching besides the toilet and emptying her guts out from sheer terror. Tears rushed down her cheeks and she simply sobbed. Chrissy Cunningham was potentially dead and Laurie Fisher felt like something was terribly wrong. She could see now everything. Every tear that pooled in Chrissy's eyes that Laurie didn't ask her about. She could feel the immense guilt of not trying to ask the girl what went through her head more often.

How could she be such a bad friend?

Chrissy always was a great friend. Why couldn't she be a great friend back?

She could hear the ABBA record still loudly playing in the background, joining her sobs as she leaned over the toilet once more. She heaved in and out, choking back agony at the mere thought of what Max potentially saw.

The music joined her in the background. It's melody sounding and lyrics playing:

The history book on the shelf
Is always repeating itself

The moment Max Mayfield walked into the Fisher's trailer, she could tell that Laurie wasn't taking the news well.

The girl was sat on the sofa, looking down with a solemn frown. She wasn't in her pyjamas anymore, wearing some high wasted mom jeans and a pink and white stripped t-shirt. Max also noticed that she was wearing a necklace she had never seen before. It was a simply pearl necklace, something she never thought Laurie would be wearing.

"You sure it was Chrissy?" Laurie asked quietly, praying that Max had mistaken the girl for someone else.

"I'm sure." Max quietly replied, watching as Laurie hiccupped and covered her mouth, her eyes shutting as some tears fell down her cheeks. Max felt so awful dumping so much onto Laurie, but she didn't know who else to turn to who'd actually listen to her. Max grabbed onto Laurie's free hand, giving it a small yet firm squeeze. "Listen, Laurie I don't think Eddie did-"

Laurie looked mortified. "They think Eddie killed Chrissy?"

Max shrugged. "I'm assuming that's going to be the first thing police assume."

"There's no way." Laurie immediately started, shaking her head in pure disbelief. "I've known Eddie for years, he may be an eccentrically passionate idiot, but the closest he'd get to murder is at a D&D campaign."

"I'm not saying he did it. It's just, I saw him last with Chrissy and then she- you know-"

"Died." Laurie grimaced, her voice quiet. She didn't want to accept the fact that Chrissy Cunningham was laying dead in the Munson trailer across the road from her. She wanted to believe that Chrissy was safe, happy in bed, sleeping until god knows what hour of the morning. She wanted the phone to ring and for Chrissy to be on the other side.

Laurie just wanted Chrissy alive.

Max sat closer to Laurie, pulling the blonde close. She gave her a side hug, knowing how much comfort Laurie needed right now. "If my gut feeling is right, then our best bet is talking to someone that isn't the cops."

"Well obviously!" Laurie replied, her voice hoarse. She coughed, clearing her throat. "Usually, I'd encourage us to maybe try and talk to them but we could incriminate Eddie ourselves. So, who do we talk to?"

Max shrugged. "I have no idea." She paused for a moment, thinking. Then, her eyes widened and she looked at Laurie. "Off topic question, what time did you get home?"

"Just before the power went iffy. So just around twenty past nine?" Laurie replied, giving Max a confused look. "Why? Doesn't the power always go out here or have I been having delusions about it for the past nine years?" She tried joking, though she knew this wasn't at all the best time to joke.

Max exhaled shakily. "We need to go." The ginger haired girl stood up.

"What? Now?"

"Yes!" Max grabbed onto Laurie's arm. Laurie looked at her with wide eyes, standing up and grabbing onto her bag. She threw it on her back, allowing the Mayfield girl to drag her along.  "You know Dustin Henderson right? We're going to his place, he's probably going to be the only right person for us to talk to right now."
