Chapter 4 - Getting in trouble and hard convincing

Annabeth's POV:

I walked back home. And by home I mean mansion. Did I forget to mention that earlier?

I quietly opened the door and peered inside. Great. My mother is nowhere in sight. I needed to get to the pills before she noticed.

I sneaked to the stairs and looked around. My mother hasn't discovered me yet, so I assumed she didn't know I was home.

I was about to go up the stairs, when I heard the sharp voice of my Mother cut through the silence. "Annabeth. Where do you think you're going?"

I looked behind me. Athena stood at the doorway, with her arms crossed.

Dammit. The colour drained out of my face. My mother's gaze seemed to pry out all my secrets from the depth of my mind.

I composed myself. "Back to my room, of course."

My mother looked unimpressed. "I don't want any of your sass, young lady."

I got uncomfortable under her inspection, and started fidgeting.

My mum stared at me, and then reached a conclusion. "You didn't take your pills, did you?"

"No, mother." I suddenly found my shoes extremely interesting.

She sighed and shook her head. "I remind you each day, yet you still forget. I expect more from you." She looked at me. "I care about you, Annabeth. People won't except you if they know. Did anyone find out?"

My breathe caught in my throat. "No, of course not." I said quickly, maybe a bit too quickly. Mother looked like she didn't believe me but let it slide.

"What did you get in the test?" She moved on to another subject. I breathed a subtle sigh of relief.

"100. Full marks." I replied. She nodded in satisfaction.

"You can go study now." She turned around.

"Wait, mum!" She turned back to look at me. "Can I meet up with some friends tomorrow?"

"No, you may not. You have to study hard. If you want to continue learning architecture, you have to work diligently. Not run off with a group of hooligans."

I sighed. "But-"

"No buts. Your mother knows best." She turned around to leave once again, when an idea struck me.

"Mother, you do know that I am meeting up with Piper McLean?" I asked her with a sly smile on my face.

Seeing my expression, she tensed up. "The daughter of Tristan McLean?" She asked.

"The one and only."

She sighed. "Then I guess you may go. When is it?"

"I have to ask her."

"Fine. Tell me before tomorrow, or you are not allowed to go. Understand?"

I nodded and flashed her a smile. "Thank you mum!" She didn't say anything and left.

I bounded up the stairs and into my room and spotted the white pills on the shelf. Do I still need to take it since the day is already over? Nah, I'm not going to.

I dropped my bag on the floor, and then sat down at my makeup table and started removing my makeup. It was itchy and I'd be damned to wear it any longer than I have to.

I removed the last of my mascara and looked into the mirror. The bags under my eyes were more prominent now. "I guess I have to sleep earlier today."

I looked down at my dress. "I'm going to change out of this." I got on my knees and searched under the bed for the secret pair of jeans and t-shirt I keep away from my mother's sight.

My eyes widened. There was nothing there? I swore. My mother must have found it and threw it away. I'm lucky she didn't approach me about it. I guess I have to wear this cursed dress for the rest of the evening.

Oh well. I remembered that I still had to contact Piper about meeting up tomorrow.

I searched for my pocket before remembering that the dress I was wearing didn't have pockets and I had put the phone in my bag.

I knelt down to my bag and proceeded to dig around. "Aha!" I held my phone up. "Now," I muttered. "Where did I put her phone number again?"
