The End of Humanity

This is really weird but I think I kind of like it?? I don't know if it makes sense but I like the idea so

TW: Death

"I know, it's hard but you need to forget about what the world was and see it as it is now!" Dan exclaimed, looking out into the crowd of about twenty people, all seeming rather distraught. He was standing on a deserted car so that he could see everyone's faces.

The land was rock hard and completely dry. They were only about five trees in view and, other than that, there was nothing but rubble.

Buildings left abandoned, roofs collapsed and cars left stranded, some without any doors. It was like the whole world was one big, empty desert.

That was what it was like after the apocalypse hit. Nearly everyone died and they were the only twenty survivors.

All had lost most people close to them and were close to giving up themselves. Everyone's clothes were ripped and worn, some people were missing some items of clothing such as their shoes: they had got lost in the chaos.

"We just need to focus on getting by!" Dan was the leader of the group. He wore a black jumper and skinny jeans. The sleeves of his jumper were rolled to his elbows and his jean legs were up to his knees: it was boiling hot.

"But we can't live without our families?" A voice called out and Dan quickly scanned the group of people to find a young boy of around 16 years old. His hair was a mess on his head and scratches and cuts littered his once attractive face.

"I know. It's hard. We just need to support each other and stay safe."

"How do we survive? We need food and water! I can't see any lakes around?"

The crowd burst into small chatter, all agreeing with the boy.

Dan let out a loud sigh, bringing everyone's attention back to him. "We need to try. Let's split up, half go in search for water and half for food. Get into pairs and look for some resources. Everyone on the left look for food and, right, water."

Dan climbed down from the car and watched as everyone split off, running around to find the resources needed for survival. One man with black hair was left and he was softly smiling at Dan. "I'll be your partner," He said and Dan curtly nodded. "I'm Phil."

"Dan."

"I kind of already knew that but oh well." Phil laughed. Dan couldn't help but look at him in awe: the whole world was collapsing around him and he still had the joy in him to laugh. Did he not lose his family like everyone else? Why was he still positive?

"Why- How are you laughing?" Dan asked, raising an eyebrow.

"You need to stay optimistic in times like this. Now, come on, let's go this way." Dan smiled softly, admiring the stranger's strength.

-

"Look, Dan!" Phil exclaimed, excitedly running forward to an abandoned shop, still having some food on the shelf. "It's pretty old but I think it should be okay!"

"Great! Let's get as much as we can carry!" Dan began to scrape up all the food on the shelf, finding a mixture of tins containing things like soup, dried fruit and some even fish and meat.

Amongst them, they managed to carry around fourteen tins back to the site where they had left everyone. A couple of pairs of people had done the same: finding tins and bringing them back. Some people even had old bottles of water.

-

They laid out the supplies in front of them once everyone was back. They had around twenty bottles of water and a lot more tins.

Dan split all of them between everyone, making sure it was fair. "Make sure you save this food. It could be the last food on the planet. Ration it so you can survive."

Everyone nodded in understanding; a couple of people immediately opening a tin and hungrily eating the contents.

-

Dan was broken as, a couple of weeks later, the resources were almost gone. He watched as people fought over the remaining food and as everyone fell apart.

A few people had already gone. They had made the mistake of rushing the food and water and had died from either starvation or thirst. It wasn't a pretty sight and Dan just felt more broken as all the days passed.

-

Another week past and there were only two left. Dan and Phil.

They had one tin left each and no water. Both were gasping for some sort of liquid, their bodies weak and frail.

"Dan, I can't do this anymore.." Phil mumbled one night, his entire body drained of colour. His breathing was slow and weak, like he was on the verge of death.

"You need to stay optimistic." Dan mumbled, repeating Phil's own words. His heart was slowly breaking as he watched Phil's eyes flutter shut and Phil forced them open once again.

"I can't. We're going to die. I don't... I don't want to die..." Dan leant over Phil and shortly pressed his lips against his. The whole world was silent until Dan pulled back, his eyes full of wet tears.

"Phil, hold on.."

"I'm sorry. Stay safe for me, okay? I love you." Those were Phil's last words before his eyes fluttered shut for the last time.

Dan broke down.

-

Just a mere day later, Dan was lying by Phil's dead body, just wishing and praying that the man's eyes would open once again. He was trying to convince himself that Phil was just asleep and he'd wake up soon.

Dan was not the last human alive. Of course he wasn't.

He couldn't move: he had neither the energy nor motivation to. His eyes closed and he let death take him.

That was the end of humanity. It had ended with two men finding love and dying beside each other.

-

Hundreds of years passed until the first man returned to earth. He had not grown up on the planet but another, somewhere safe. He had explored the planet, desperately searching for any life in the dry, hot wasteland.

He found nothing but a pair of skeletons. He glanced down at them, at first recoiling in disgust. But then he noticed how they still, somehow, had their hands on top of each other's.

The man bit his lip, realising they were lovers. Lovers that had died together.

I'm lonely and a little bit sad but all's okay.
