I Bet You Love Me
I think I quite like this
Dan and Phil were the top athletes of their year. (*bursts out laughing*) Every year, on Sport's Day, they would argue and act like the 100m race was a competition within the Olympics. It wasn't even that important but they acted like the race would determine who would live and who would die.
One of them would always win, no matter who else competed. The one who lost wouldn't live it down until the next Sport's Day. The race was ridiculously important to them.
"I'm so much faster than you." Phil bragged, smirking at Dan who looked more than annoyed.
"No, you're not. Last year I won the 100m race." Dan shot back, furrowing his eyebrows.
"Well I won the year before."
"I'm going to beat you for the second year in a row."
"Oh yeah?"
"Yeah!"
"Boys! Stop shouting, your race is up next." A teacher yelled, making both Dan and Phil pout and walk in separate directions towards their groups of best friends.
"You're going to win for our team, right Phil?" His girlfriend, Louise, said, smiling widely in encouragement.
"Of course, I am." Phil bent down and tied up his shoes laces, making sure he wouldn't trip at the start of the race (he did that once and Dan didn't shut up about it for a whole year).
"Have you had a drink? You look a little hot."
"Actually no, I should probably have one though." Louise handed Phil her bottle of water (which was pretty warm considering the heat outside). Phil hated the taste but downed a lot of it anyway, not wanting to faint of dehydration or whatever.
"Year 10, 100m boys!" Someone called, making Phil smile widely.
"That's my cue. Wish me luck!" Phil high-fived his girlfriend before striding up towards the track where he was meant to be running. Dan was soon beside him, smirking (as if to tell Phil he was determined to win again). Phil smirked back before getting in his running position.
"On your marks!" The teacher yelled once all of the boys were settled down. "Get set!" Dan and Phil exchanged a quick look to tell the other that they were going to win. "GO!" Dan and Phil shot off from the starting line, running so fast that their legs were almost blurred.
They approached the finish line almost neck and neck with each other. Dan was just the tiniest bit ahead. They were pushing themselves so much that their faces were going bright red and they couldn't control their breathing anymore. Just as Dan was about to get to the finish line, his foot gave in and he collapsed to the ground, letting out a loud yelp. Phil crossed the line and smirked to himself as he came to a standstill.
Everyone cheered for Phil but a couple of the PE teachers who were in charge of the races, ran over to Dan who was still on the ground, holding his foot.
Phil decided to walk over there, just to see if Dan was okay.
"Phil!" One of the teachers exclaimed once they noticed Phil walking over to them. Phil was still breathing heavily because of how much effort he had put into the run but none of the teachers paid much attention to his breathing. "Could you piggy back Dan to the nurse? He has injured his foot."
"Me?" Phil almost groaned, looking at Dan who was glaring at him.
"Yeah, you. We need to prepare for the next race so hurry."
Phil sighed but bent down anyway, allowing Dan to reluctantly wrap his arms around his neck. Phil lifted him up and he was surprisingly light for a boy in Year 10.
"If it wasn't for my foot, I would be running as far away from you as I could right now." Dan muttered once they were half way down the field.
"I can't believe you tripped," Phil chuckled.
"Shut up! My foot gave in."
"Oh yeah? Are you sure you didn't just want me to win?"
"Why would I let you win, Lester? We've been battling it out all of secondary school so why would I give in now?"
"Because you've secretly got feelings for me." Phil teased in a cheeky voice, making Dan groan loudly to himself.
"As if I would have feelings for someone as annoying as you."
"Someone as annoyingly handsome as me."
"Shut up, Lester!" If Phil could somehow see Dan's face, he would see that Dan was going bright red. "I bet you love me too."
Phil snorted. "As if."
"Don't you think I'm attractive too?"
"I have a girlfriend!"
"A girlfriend who you're only with because she's popular. I bet you don't even like her."
"Howell, what did you just say about Louise?" Phil's voice was laced with anger, despite Dan being quite close to the truth. The truth was that he was with Louise because he was hiding the fact that he was gay (since he didn't want to be made fun of); he liked Louise as a friend, nothing more. Louise didn't know that though.
"You don't like her. At all."
"I could just leave you here, you know?"
"Please don't!" Dan sighed before deciding not to say any more.
They got to the nurse after an annoying amount of silence. "Miss, Howell's an idiot and tripped whilst running. He hurt his foot." Phil said, bending down so that Dan could get off of his back.
"Phil, don't call him an idiot. It happens." The nurse replied, sending a short glare towards Phil who was now leaning against the wall, his arms folded. "Sit down here, Dan." Dan took a seat on a plastic chair at the edge of the room.
It turned out that Dan had broken his ankle. Admittedly, Phil had laughed when his friend told him about Dan being in a cast. It was pretty funny, considering it had happened during the most important race on Sport's Day... Phil was never going to let Dan forget that he had tripped.
If he hadn't tripped, he probably would have won.
-
"Lester." Dan mumbled, leaning on his crutch as he slammed his locker shut.
"I can't believe you broke your ankle, you idiot." Phil responded, laughing quietly to himself.
"Shut up, it hurt."
"Did it? Cute, you're a baby as well as a terrible runner."
"I hate you."
"No, you don't. You love me." Phil was joking but this time Dan's face wasn't hidden. He saw the way Dan turned bright red. "You're blushing! It's true! You do love me!"
"I don't!" Dan argued, his face still red.
"You do! That's really cute!"
"Shut up!"
"Dan loves me! Dan loves me!" Phil wouldn't shut up and his face was tauntingly close to Dan's. He was basically asking for it.
Dan leant in the short distance and pressed his lips against Phil's.
Phil pulled back, his eyes wide with shock. "What the hell was that?!" He yelled, making Dan bite his lip.
"Nothing." Dan then hopped away with his crutches before Phil could yell at him anymore.
-
"Howell, give me my book back!" Phil yelled, reaching out to grab his book just to have Dan snap it back.
"No." Dan laughed, finding it hilarious to see Phil struggle.
"Howell!"
"Lester." Dan teased, glaring at the boy in the sit next to him.
Phil knew exactly how to get it back. He leant forward and pressed a short kiss to Dan's cheek.
Dan's eyes widened and he slowly handed the book back in utter shock.
Phil knew how to play with Dan's feelings and it was undeniably fun.
-
Dan had just had his cast off and so he could walk again (which was a huge relief... dragging crutches around with him for so long was a pain).
Dan was in an empty classroom, trying to find his exercise book, when Phil walked in. "What are you doing, Howell?" Phil said, making Dan jump and drop all of the exercise books he was looking through. The books cluttered to the ground, making a loud noise. Phil started to laugh at him, finding it hilarious that Dan looked so shocked.
"I'm trying to find my book so I can, you know, revise? I don't think you'll know what that means, Lester." Dan snapped back once he had rounded up all of his confidence.
"What are you implying?"
"That you're stupid."
"I'm stupid, am I? You must be a total idiot then."
"I'm not an idiot!" Dan exclaimed, bending down and beginning to pick up all of the books he had dropped.
"You really think so? That's really cute, you're not only stupid, you're oblivious too."
"Are you just going to stand there and stare at me or are you going to help me clean up the mess you helped cause?"
"I mean, I quite like staring at you.."
"Shut up, Lester."
"What? Last time I remember, saying you like looking at someone was a compliment."
"It's a compliment coming from anyone but you."
"Why? You think I'm joking?" Dan stiffened, picking up the last exercise book and placing the pile on the table beside him.
"You're not?" Dan mumbled, so quietly that Phil could barely hear it.
They stayed silent for a second before Phil stepped closer to Dan. He grabbed the boy's shoulders before pulling him closer and connecting their lips.
Dan froze, not sure if Phil was kissing him as some sort of... test or something. However, after a second or so, he began to kiss back.
"We never speak of this." Phil muttered once he had pulled back from the kiss. He walked over to the pile of books Dan had just collected up off of the floor and began to look through it. "Oh, and I hate you."
"I hate you too." Dan mumbled but he wasn't quite sure he believed himself.
-
"Louise, I think we should break up." Phil mumbled one lunchtime.
"Why? Don't you love me anymore?" Louise looked heartbroken and her eyes were quick to fill with tears. Phil felt really bad since he did really like Louise... just not as anything more than friends.
"We can stay friends.. it's just I have something to tell you?"
"Were you cheating on me?"
"No-" Phil cut himself off, swallowing. "Not really. I kissed someone else a couple of times but-"
"Who?"
"What?"
"Who did you kiss? Do you love them?"
"It doesn't matter but yeah, I think I do like them."
Louise sighed, wiping away a tear. "Promise you'll still be my friend?" She couldn't lose Phil over something such as a break up- they were too close and he was an amazing friend.
"Promise."
-
Phil grabbed Dan's arm and pulled him into an empty classroom.
"I broke up with Louise." He mumbled after a couple of moments of awkward silence.
"Why? I thought you loved her?" Dan felt really awkward since he had absolutely no idea why Phil was telling him that he had broken up with Louise... they weren't friends, they were enemies.
"What you said on Sport's Day was right.. I didn't love her. I was mostly in denial."
"In denial? What do you have to deny, Lester? You're so perfect, aren't you? What in the world could you possibly have to hide?"
"I'm gay, Dan." Phil muttered, looking down at his shoes.
"You called me Dan..." Dan looked up to see that Phil wasn't smirking and he most definitely wasn't glaring at him either... in fact, his eyes were glistening with tears.
"I was with Louise to hide the fact that I was gay."
"Look, Lester, I don't understand why you're telling me this but no one in this school will care much that you're gay. There are lots of people in our year who are openly gay."
"It's not just that I am gay but.. I have a crush on a guy too."
"We're enemies, Lester. You don't need to tell me this stuff."
"I think I have a crush on..." Phil trailed off, taking a step forward so that their bodies were almost touching each other. They were so close that both of their breaths hitched slightly and Dan was beginning to blush. "You."
The room went silent for a couple of seconds before Dan leant in and connected their lips.
When they pulled back, they both looked shocked but happy.
"Does that mean I don't have to hate you anymore?" Dan sighed in relief, smiling to himself. Phil shook his head, not trusting his voice just yet. "Finally. I was finding it really hard to insult you..."
Phil snorted but he didn't say anything rude, instead, he said, "You're so cheesy, it's disgusting..." Dan's face fell but Phil just smirked. "...disgustingly cute."
-
The whole school was absolutely shocked when Dan and Phil walked out of the classroom holding hands.
Nobody saw that coming. Especially not Louise.
