Chapter 11 - Fools and blabering celebrities
"Now come on, Arabella! We've got to get a good spot to see The Marvel! He'll be coming on stage any minute now," Lacey dragged me with her to the front of the already thickening crowd.
"Lacey, stop pushing people so hard, they're starting to look at us like we're weird."
"So," she says, "Let them think what they want to think about us. I'm going to get a chance to see my role model and idol up close for the first time ever."
"But-"
"No buts. Because I could have gotten his autograph before, but someone decided to go run off and get saved by The Marvel, which ended the signing. I want the chance to be in close proximity with my hero. Now shut up and stand still." She tells me.
I crack a little smile and shut up.
Maybe I shouldn't tell her about those couple times that I have been in close proximity with her hero.
It took a couple of more minutes for the crowd to settle down and for the announcer to come up on stage, none other than our mayor, Randy Waters.
"Good evening Empire City," he paused for the cheers, "Super day had been a celebration in our amazing city for twelve good years. A celebration that our city is no longer in terrible danger. Now, I would like to take a moment for us all to think about why we are having this festival, a moment of silence if you will."
The Mayor's words had somehow gotten almost the whole festival to quiet down. Everyone knew the terrible things that had happened right in this very square twelve years ago, me better than anyone.
"Now," he says, getting the crowd to start talking again, "That day is over, and I'm proud to say that it will never happen again, especially with the best super in the world guarding our front steps. Give it up for The Marvel!"
As soon as he was announced, the crowd went wild. Everyone loved The Marvel, everyone except maybe for me. The festival goers became happy once again, letting themselves forget that day that they just relived.
He came flying in from the top of a building one block over. He's such a show off, isn't he? The crowd cheered again as he passed right over our heads. He landed gracefully on the stage, which got him a few more cheers. He walked over to the microphone and greeted the crowd with a simple, "Hello." It took a couple minutes until the screaming girls stopped fangirling.
"Hello, Empire City," he paused for effect, "Whose having fun?"
The crowd went wild, again. If he didn't finish up soon, I'd be deaf by the end of the festival. Lacey, however, was probably screaming the loudest, just my luck to be standing next to her.
"Now, I heard this was a party! Whose having fun?!" he puts his hand to his ear for effect, which just encouraged the crowd more.
Lets just say that my eardrums might be permanently damaged from the ordeal.
I'll be deaf as well as blind.
"That's better!" he yelled through the microphone.
"This is so awesome!" Lacey exclaimed, forgetting to lower her volume to a normal tone when I was only less than a foot away from her.
"Now, I would like to take some of my time up here today to talk to one of the citizens here in Empire City." The crowd hushed in anticipation. "I will, of course, pick one person at random to come up here and get the chance to meet me and have your own, one of a kind, Marvel t-shirt!"
At this the crowd went wild. Who wouldn't want the chance to meet The Marvel?
"Now, let me pick." His eyes traveled all around the crowd until he looked at me. I never noticed before now the deep brown color of those eyes.
I could've sworn in that moment that I could see the decision going through his mind. Pick me and get more time to talk to me, but also fuel more stories about me knowing him personally, or pick someone else and miss the chance to annoy me. Maybe those weren't his exact thoughts, but I could guess that they were pretty close.
Then he made a decision that I approved of.
"You, random citizen!" he pointed right next to me, at Lacey.
Now, I would've been ecstatic that the super had chosen someone besides me, except for the fact that I'm pretty sure I would be hearing impaired for the rest of my life. Lacey squealed higher than I thought was humanly possible until this point. I saw tear of joy glistening on her face as she slowly but surely made her way to the stage.
"What's your name?" he asked and I swore Lacey almost fainted.
"L-L-Lacey" She managed to say.
"Alright, Lacey, do you know who I am?" At this he got a quick laugh from the crowd.
Lacey vigorously nodded her head so hard that I thought she would break her neck in the process.
"Now-" He never got to finish because Lacey fell backwards at that exact moment, she had fainted. Him, having super senses, caught her before she hit the ground. He flashed a smile through his mask at the crowd, "I guess I make all the ladies faint."
The crowd laughed and some guards came up stage to take Lacey to the side and into a side chair. I rushed over to her and saw that she had become conscious again in the short time she had been dragged off stage.
"-What do you mean I fainted? I actually fainted? In front of The Marvel? Oh god, this is so embarrassing!" her face turned red and she buried it in her hands.
"Lacey," I walk up to her, "It's okay, I bet he didn't even care that much."
"Care? Of course he cared! I must've made him look like a fool!"
"Wait - what?"
"I made him look like some blabbering celebrity with fans who faint at the chance to meet him." She sighed and shook her head.
"Well, he is."
Lacey looked up from her hands, shocked.
"Don't you dare say that about my future husband!"
I sighed, "Sorry, I didn't know you two were so much in love."
"Well, I never said that." She says, a little more embarrassed than before.
"Come on," I prompted her, "Let's go ride the Ferris wheel. I've never ridden one before."
"What! You've never been on a Ferris wheel? That settles it, we are going to get you on your first Ferris wheel today. No if, ands, or buts."
And just like that, she forgot about her current dilemma. She was now totally focused on the new task at hand: Getting me on my first Ferris wheel ride. That was the thing about Lacey, she was very short minded. She changed her mind frequently and could usually only think about one thing at a time.
When we reached the ride I realized my mistake.
I could fully see the full height that the festival ride would bring us to, which made my insides churn. I had only wanted to bring Lacey's mind off of her embarrassment, it hadn't crossed my mind that Ferris wheels involved going high up into the air.
"Umm . . . I didn't think this through." I admit.
"Arabella, you're the one who mentioned it first, therefore, I am not letting you sneak your way out of this one. You will ride this Ferris wheel, even if it means the death of me." She ignored the rest of my protests and dragged me to the line, which was shorter than I'd hoped.
"Five tickets please." The lady at the end of the line asked of us. I fished out the rest of my tickets and gave five to the lady, who smiled in return.
"Come one, Arabella!" Lacey dragged me to the open container.
I sat on the semi-cold seat and lifted my arms as the bar was brought over us. The man who had previously opened the door for us now closed it. I felt like he had just signed a warrant for our deaths by closing that door, enclosing us in a certain death contraption.
I also had a gigantic fear of enclosed spaces as well of having a fear of heights, therefore, a Ferris wheel ride was not one of my brightest ideas.
"Oh, come on" Lacey said, "Cheer up! You can see the whole block from the top!"
"That's what I was afraid of."
We started our climb with a sharp jolt, which did little to calm my nerves. Before I knew it, we had almost reached the top of the death contraption.
I had to admit, Lacey was right. The block did look pretty cool from up here. The people looked like ants swarming a particularly large piece of food (the stage). Unfortunately, this height also gave me a clear view of the events that were about to happen.
"Woah, what was that?" I exclaimed after a particularly strong gust of wind rocked our seat back and forth.
"I'm sure it was nothing." Lacey tried to calm me down, even though we both knew that there was no use in that.
Another gust of wind rocked the seat even worse. I heard as the kid in the seat below us screamed in panic, he had the right idea.
I was about to ask Lacey if the seats were supposed to rock back and forth so violently when a third gust of wind knocked the breath out of me. I heard the metal that attached our seat to the rest of the ride groan under the pressure of the extremely strong wind. Now the kid below us wasn't the only one freaking out.
This wind wasn't normal. Any wind that made a metal contraption groan and rock was extremely strong. This wind could only be caused by a Super, and the only super I knew that controlled the wind was Tornado.
I then decided to make the mistake of looking out at the festival below me.
Little did I know how bad of an idea that was.
