When we went downstairs, we found Jasmine talking with Claire and Jon. She looked worried.
She had probably come because she heard Felicia yelling and wanted to see what the hell was going on.
I didn't blame her, I would have done the same.
«There you are! Can someone please tell me what the hell is going on?» Jax asked exasperatedly. Is that even a word? It sounds made up. Is it?
«Do you want the short version, or the long one?» I asked her.
«Tell me the short first, and we'll see then if the long one is needed.» she blinked.
«Felicia just moved in and I'm going to kill her parents.»
«What's the long story?» she asked again.
«Okay, I'm outta here.» Claire announced and walked away from us.
So we all explained to Jasmine everything she had missed so far, which was lots of stuff and overwhelming, because it was drama involving Felicia. That's some juicy gossip right there, just saying.
I'm not one to gossip, but you know what I mean.
Felicia always was the quiet one around. She was down-to-earth and realistic. She was the one that kept us dummies from trouble.
Thank God we had Felicia, or we would have probably been locked up at a juvenile center or something. You never know.
After that we turned the TV on to watch the news. Imyrth was all over them again.
«Just a few days after the Queen's disappearance, the new ruler of Imyrth has caused much disturbance of his own. Even though the biggest damage has been caused by Elementalists from all over the country, a good portion of it has been caused by Amon Brandon's army, who has been rampaging and destroying villages, leaving behind nothing but ash.» the reporter explained.
«God... Imyrth has changed. It's nothing like I remember it. Guys, don't you remember the two weeks we stayed there? You were about seven years old, but you must remember it was nothing like this!» Claire asked. The only thing I remember from my trip to Imyrth was how much fun I had.
«Kinda... You said it yourself. We were seven.» I shrugged.
«I remember meeting two weirdos there... Those two liked getting in trouble.» Claire sighed.
«Oh, right! I remember that. You and Ben got in trouble along with them.» Jon told her.
«Yeah... They had weird names too... They were a couple, weren't they?» Jasmine asked.
«They looked like it, but they denied it.» my sister rolled her eyes.
«Why don't I remember any of this? Do I have goldfish memory or something? This was just nine years ago! What the hell?» I said frustratedly.
«What were their names? I can't remember that part...» Felicia asked my sister.
«The girl was Ari, I remember that because it was a nickname. I don't remember the guy's name.» Claire shook her head. We shrugged and turned back to watching TV.
By the time we finished the conversation about Claire's weird friends, the reporter had moved on from Imyrth to other news, closer to us.
«Notes and warnings have been appearing in the Clonies, a really bad, if not the worst, neighborhood of Celonie. They seem to be signed by the villain, though we can't be sure if that's actually true and not a cruel joke.» the reporter said. Claire rolled her eyes again. Jasmine scoffed. Felicia fake-coughed.
I leaned to the table to grab a glass of water.
«Two bodies have been dropped so far. There could be more, but the only victims we know of, so far, are Jessica Shane, a sixteen year old girl who had just had her fate revealed, and Cole Daniel, a 34-year-old Fatereader. They were both stabbed, they both had their tattoos scratched off and they both resided in the Clonies.» she continued. A picture of the detective that has taken on the cases appeared on-screen. «Detective Scowlman firmly believes that one of Jessica's friends is the killer, as the girl was on vacation with them when she was found killed and Cole's body was found soon after the kids returned. His main two suspects are Christopher Berley and Jinx Raven.» she said and a picture of me and Chris appeared. I choked on my water. Claire's eyes grew huge. Jasmine started swearing. Jon ran a hand through his hair.
«What the hell?! Wh- I knew that guy hated me, but he had no right to get our pictures on TV!» I yelled.
«I need to call Chris.» Felicia said and rushed to the phone.
«I'm gonna kill him.» Claire muttered and stood up.
«Where are you going?» Jon asked her.
«To the station and to find a lawyer. I'll make sure that guy loses his job and burns in hell.» she muttered in reply.
«Claire, wait! Don't you think Ben should come home first?» I asked her.
«Just call him. I'll be back later. I'll wreck Scowlman's workplace first and then I'll come back.» my sister grabbed her keys.
«Remember that just because you're pregnant, it doesn't mean you get a free Get Out of Jail card, okay? Be careful.» Jasmine told Claire as she slammed the front door behind her.
«Oh God... I'd better go call Ben.» I rushed to the phone just as Felicia hang up.
«My brother said he'll be here in five minutes.» she said quietly.
«Okay, I'll call my sister's fiancé.» I told her and started dialing the number.
«Hello?» he asked after a few rings.
«Claire just left the house to commit murder, vandalise a detective's workplace and get a lawyer. Not necessarily in that order.» I rushed. Felicia's jaw dropped.
«Jinx? Wait what? Am I not a good enough lawyer for her?»
«Ben, you're still in law school. Just get here as soon as possible. They showed Chris and I on the news as suspects for what happened to Jessie.» I gulped as I said the last part.
«Bloody hell. I'll be there in a few minutes, I was just finishing off here.» he replied and hang up.
I took a deep breath and heard a knock on the door.
«It can't be Chris, he said five minutes, not five seconds.» Felicia said. Jax and Jon must have answered the door because I heard Kyle's voice.
«I saw what happened on the news. What the hell is that guy talking about?» he asked angrily. We ran to the living room.
«I have no idea, but he's in trouble. Claire just left the house to kill him.» Felicia said.
«I should have come earlier to go with her.» Kyle replied. A smile escaped Felicia.
There was another knock on the door. Jon opened it and Chris rushed in.
«That cop is a dead cop walking.» he said running a hand through his hair. He had long hair.
«I have a headache... I'll go get an aspirin...» I muttered and went to the kitchen.
I did have a headache. A huge one. I was practically seeing stars.
All this rage and shouting was driving me crazy. When did we come to this? That kind of stuff never happened before. The Revealing Ceremony, Jessie's death, the villain. All that was changing us, and that change wasn't for the better.
In fact, nothing changed for the better again. The Revealing Ceremony sealed all our dooms.
«Are you okay?» Jasmine asked me.
«No, not really. I feel like my head is about to break in half and my life just got a few degrees harder and that's the last thing I needed right now.» I ranted. I felt like I was going to explode. There was all this stress choking me and all that responsibility. I couldn't take it.
«Relax. I get it, things are pretty rough right now, but in the end everything will work out. We have time. We have a whole life ahead of us.» she shrugged and smiled.
«That's probably what Jessie thought too, but look where it got her.» I said and put my hand over my mouth. Jasmine tensed. «Oh, God! I'm so sorry! I have no control over my mouth... I'll just go ahead and jump of a window or something now. Excuse me while I go kill myself.» I rushed. I always said stupid stuff when I felt stressed, but that hit number one.
«What did I tell you? Relax.»
«Look, Jax, I'm not trying to be the pessimistic person around here, I just want to be honest. I don't think things are looking bright right now and I don't really think they will either for a very long time. I'm sorry but no rant about hope and happiness can help at the moment.» I told her.
«I'm just trying to help, okay?» she protested. The ceremony had caused a rift between Jasmine and I. We used to be inseparable once.
«I know. The problem is that there's nothing you can do to help right now. Some things- some things, you can't fix. This is one if them.»
«What are you talking about?» she asked, confused.
«I'm talking about the way you've been acting! I know you needed alone time, we all did! I'm just worried about you and you keep withdrawing yourself from all of us! Sometimes I can't help but wonder if you and Jessie- if you were more than friends.» I muttered the last part. Jasmine turned red and gulped.
«Yes, Jessie and I were together, alright? Happy now? That's why she said she wasn't Chris' type; no guy was her type. And you know what? I'm done here. I'm just trying to help you out and you make snide remarks at me. Maybe you should ask yourself why I've been isolating myself from the group.» she ranted and rushed towards the front door, while Ben walked in looking confused.
We had been shouting. Everyone was looking at us. The thing with our kitchen, is that it was one with the living room. There was no wall, so no privacy.
«Jax, wait!» I told her, but she glared at me and slammed the door. «Fine!» the others kept staring at me, but I didn't give a damn. I ran upstairs to my bedroom.
I opened my window, climbed out of it, got out on the freezing night and shut it. I sat on the corner of the short wall surrounding the balcony. There were bars too, so there was no fear of falling off.
I was freezing, but I didn't care. Jasmine used to be my best friend. We had never had a fight before.
She was like a sister to me, and I had just ruined that.
I wanted to give her part of the blame, but I couldn't. She had done nothing wrong. All she wanted to do was help.
I stared down at the road. Just an old dirt-road with gravels, that became really muddy on rainy days. I needed a downpour that day. Seeing people get stuck or in trouble always made my mood, and it's not because I'm a terrible person. Admit it; you laugh at that stuff too.
The streets were already empty, but the sun had only just started to set. Most people were either home or already out.
Probably the first; the Clonies are not known for their hospitality, safety and nightlife. When night falls, there are just criminals on the streets.
Soon, darkness had fallen. It was even colder and my teeth were chattering, but I was too bored and stubborn to go back inside. I was wondering how nobody had come upstairs, but it must have been because they all knew that everything was my fault.
A while later, I heard the window open.
«Could you give me a hand with these?» Jon asked, holding up two mugs of hot chocolate.
«Uh... Sure.» I shrugged. I stood up, walked up to the window, took the mugs and placed them on the table.
Jon disappeared for a second and came back with two blankets.
He handed me one.
«Thanks...» I said and took it.
«What? No sass? What's wrong with you?» he joked. I didn't laugh. His face fell.
«Nothing... Sorry. I'm just a little lost in thought.» I forced a smile.
«You can't fool me; I know when you're lying. Remember, I've been around for much longer than the others have.» he reminded me.
I did know Jon for a longer time than the others, because Claire was best friends with his sister, Pearl. Whenever Pearl came by, she brought her brother along too. Then Michael, Kyle's brother, and Ben started hanging around too. I think that Michael and Pearl are a thing now, but they live outside town because of school and stuff, so I'm not sure.
«I don't wanna talk about it.»
«You never do, but you end up talking about it in the end, anyway.» he shrugged. I snorted. «See? I know you too well.»
We were both sitting on the wall with the blankets and the hot chocolates.
«This time I won't. Really. I don't wanna talk about it at all.» I sighed. «Where are the others?»
«They've all gone home, apart from Ellie. She's watching TV on the couch.» he replied. I nodded.
«Are you staying over tonight? I asked him.
«If you want me to.» he shrugged. I nodded, again. «Ben left to go find Claire.» he added.
«I hope she's okay.»
We stayed out until we finished our chocolates. We didn't talk any more, but I think that was for the best.
When we went back inside, Felicia was snoring on the couch.
«You could sleep on Jessie's bed.» I suggested when we saw the couch was unavailable.
«Are you sure?» he asked.
«Well, yeah... It's not like she's gonna need it anytime soon...» My eyes grew big again. «Oh God... I need to start thinking before opening my mouth.» I shook my head. Jon looked terrified. «I'm a monster.»
«Okay... Let's pretend that didn't just happen.» he suggested.
«That would probably be for the best...» I cringed as we went upstairs.
Fortunately for Jon, he had forgotten his spare pajamas at my house the last time he stayed over, so he didn't have to rush back at his house. He went to the bathroom to change as I changed in my room.
«Goodnight...» I told him.
«Goodnight...» he repeated.
That night was everything but good...
