After eating breakfast, Jon and I decided to go knock on Jasmine's door and then go get the others to go to our favourite coffee shop, the one next to Jon's house.
We got dressed (we all sleepover at each other's homes so much, that we have a fair amount of clothes at each other's homes too) and left the house. I left a note for my sister, even though she always knew where to find me.
We knocked on her door and a few moments later, Jessie opened it.
«Good morning! Come on in, Jasmine's in the shower.» she (unnecessarily) explained. We went in.
She led us to the living room. I sat on an armchair and Jessie sat next to Jon on the couch.
«I'm sorry I didn't stay over last night... I just didn't feel like coming home and Jasmine looked petty shaken up. I wanted to be there for her. Her parents are out of town for a while and she didn't want to stay alone either.» Jessie frowned. It was one of these rare times she wasn't smiling...
«Don't worry about it. We didn't even watch the movies, we fell asleep almost immediately after they started.» Jon reassured her.
«Yeah, Claire chose the movies, so I'll leave you to that.» I laughed.
«Let me guess; she was the first to fall asleep.» Jessie asked.
«Naturally...» I rolled my eyes.
«I'll go check on Jasmine, she's been in the shower for two hours now.» Jessie stood up.
«What time did you two get up?» Jon asked in surprise.
«Early.» Jessie shrugged.
«Yeah, I got that.» he replied.
Moments after Jessie left, Jon stood up.
«Where are you going?» I asked him.
«I'm hungry.» he shrugged.
«We just had breakfast!»
«So what? Am I not allowed to be hungry?» he gave me an exasperated look. I raised an eyebrow. He ignored me and went to the kitchen.
And the he called me. How bloody stupid could that monkey be?
«Jinxie?» he yelled from the kitchen.
«What is it this time?» I groaned.
«There's something I think you should see...» he replied and I went to see what he was talking about.
That's when I saw the blood. There wasn't much of it, but there was still plenty. It was on the counter and dripped down on the floor.
«What the hell..?» I muttered.
«Hey, guys!» Jasmine greeted us. We spun around in lightning speed. She had a bandage around her palm.
«Hey! What's up?» Jon said awkwardly. Why were we awkward? We had never been awkward with each other before.
«You know... The sky, the ceiling.» she replied sarcastically.
«Jax, what's with the blood?» I asked her.
«Oh, I cut myself this morning. It's stupid, really... I just didn't have time to clean it up, because I panicked and went off to get the bandage.» she laughed and waved it off.
«Are you okay?» I asked her.
«Yeah, don't worry.» she smiled.
«Okay, I have an idea.» Jon clapped his hands together.
«Oh, boy... What is it?» I asked him.
«You're gonna have to wait to find out. Go to the coffee shop, I'll get Kyle and the twins.» he smirked.
«That's unfair, monkey! You don't tell people you have an idea and then run off before explaining yourself!» I yelled at him as he walked out the kitchen.
«Watch me, Jinxie.» he winked and left.
«So... who's gonna be the maid of honor?» Jasmine asked.
«What?» I asked her confused.
«Knowing Jinx, it's probably gonna be Felicia.» Jessie smirked.
«What the hell are you two talking about?» I snapped at them, still in confusion.
«Nothing, nevermind.» Jasmine smiled slyly. «I'm gonna go get dressed. Don't leave without me.» she rolled her eyes and left.
After Jasmine got dressed, which didn't take long, we went to the coffee shop and sat at our usual table in the back. We liked that table because it was kinda hidden, so no-one could see us, but we could pretty much see everyone.
That, and because it was the only table with an electricity socket and Chris loved texting. Whom? Well, that's one of Moiral's greatest mysteries.
It didn't take long for the others to come.
«Good morning. Now, Jon, tell us that idea of yours.» I told him. What? I was curious.
«Coffee first.» he muttered. I glared at him. «Or I could just tell you now...» he yawned. «Okay, so I was thinking we could go on a vacation, just the seven of us, to get our minds off the tattoos. Besides, we have no school and I really wanna get out of the Clonies for a while. I need a change of scenery.» he explained.
«That's not a bad idea... My aunt Daisy has a huge house a little over Mount Panther. It has a pool and everything. I could call and ask her if we can go stay there for a while.» Kyle shrugged.
«You had me at pool.» Chris laughed.
«If I call her now and she agrees to let us stay there and we start packing immediately after coffee, we could be there at night.» Kyle added.
«What are you waiting for? Go call her!» Felicia punched him in the shoulder, lightly. He blushed a bit.
«Okay, I'll be right back.» he said and ran outside.
In short, Kyle's aunt agreed to let us stay at her house for a week, which meant we would return two days before school started. After finishing our coffee, we all ran at our homes to ask for permission from our parents.
Or our legal guardians, because our parents had decided that their sixteen-year-old daughter was mature and responsible enough to take care of her nine-year-old sister, while they left for Imyrth and never came back. Yeah, I'm talking about my parents. And of course I'm bitter about it. I hadn't heard from them in nearly seven years.
«Okay, you can go. I trust you.» Claire told me when I asked her.
«Thank you, thank you, thank you! You're the best sister ever.» I thanked her. «Help me pack?» I suggested.
«Of course.» she smiled and we went to the room I shared with Jessie. Jessie ran in about five minutes later with a panicked look on her face.
«I don't know what to pack!» she yelled and frantically started going through her clothes.
Claire helped us both and two hours later, Jessie and I were knocking on Jasmine's door. We then proceeded to knock on the twins', but the door opened before we did and Felicia, Chris, Kyle and Jon rushed out.
«Sorry if we took long, Chris kept forgetting stuff.» Felicia rolled her eyes at her brother.
«Ready to go?» Jon asked us.
«No, we're carrying our suitcases around the street because it's fun.» I replied sarcastically.
«Go to hell, Jinxie.» he said.
That's when the cabs arrived. There were seven of us, so we had to go with two separate cars. I was with Jessie, Jasmine and Felicia and the guys were together.
Jasmine sat on the front because she gets carsick. I got the window seat behind the driver. Felicia sat next to me.
At some point, we arrived at a forest and started going through it. About an hour later, we arrived at the house.
We got our stuff and got in the house.
«My aunt said she usually leaves the keys in a hole at the apple tree.» Kyle said. «Wait here, I'll be right back.»
Soon, we were all in the living room.
«Okay, there are four bedrooms. The one with the single bed is mine, because I don't share.» Kyle started. «There's another one with two single beds and two with one double bed each.» he explained.
«I guess Chris and I will get the single beds.» Felicia shrugged.
«I'm sharing with Jax!» Jessie rushed and hugged Jasmine.
«Oh well... Guess I'm stuck with you, monkey.» I sighed.
«You look disappointed, Jinxie.» he smirked.
«Yeah, probably because I have been seeing your face every bloody day for almost sixteen years. I'm kinda bored of you.» I mocked him.
«Touché, Jinxie. Touché.» he rolled his eyes.
Kyle took us all to our rooms and we started unpacking. It was about ten o'clock, but we were all exhausted. Despite that, we all went downstairs after we unpacked to have a snack before going to sleep. We all put our pajamas on before doing so.
«So what are we gonna do? Live off oregano chips for a week?» Felicia asked. «Not that I mind...» she added.
«We could go to the market tomorrow morning. Whoever is up for it, tape a piece of paper on your door so I can come wake you.» Kyle replied. I wasn't used to Kyle being the responsible one. He was usually the jokester of the group.
«I already know my answer...» I yawned. «I'm going to sleep.»
«I think we all should. It's been a long day and a long trip.» Felicia rubbed her eyes. Everyone nodded in agreement and we all headed upstairs to our rooms.
«Goodnight, everyone...» Chris muttered.
«Goodnight...» we all replied as we got in the rooms.
I lied down on the bed.
«Goodnight, Jinxie.» Jon muttered.
«Goodnight, monkey.» I replied.
I wish I could say how great I slept that night, but I can't, because just a few hours after I fell asleep, I woke up gasping. That's when I saw Jon trying to wake me.
«What happened?» I asked him.
«You were muttering in your sleep. I'm pretty sure you were having a nightmare.» he frowned.
«Yeah... I was...» I muttered as I remembered parts of my dream.
«Do you want to talk about it?» he asked me.
«No.» I sobbed and shook my head.
«Come here...» he hugged me tightly.
I cried a lot, until I finally fell asleep in my best friend's arms. And yeah, Jon is my best friend. I've known him the longest.
It was the same nightmare I'd had the night before, and the same one that haunted me for months after; everyone I care about dying. It wasn't just their dying moments, it was the way they fought before they dropped dead.
No matter how I tried, I could never remember how they died. I could never remember when. Eventually, I started getting used to it. Sometimes, I didn't sleep at night. Sometimes I did and tried to forget about it in the morning. And sometimes, I tried not to have the same nightmare again.
I failed every single time.
