Chapter 9 (Edited)
Damien's pov
"Isabella, your secret?"
Isabella : I hate roses! I hate perfectionists! I love wacky, weird, and all things abnormal.
"What is your question for Damien?"
Isabella : What does Vita Socium mean?
"Vita Socium means Life Partner."
I avoided any and all eye contact with Camilo. As Isabella and Mirabel smirked to each other.
"Dolores, what is your secret?"
Dolores : I can hear every baby being conceived in the village.
A lot of red faces erupted in the room.
"W-what is your question for Damien?"
Dolores : What was wrong with Camilo earlier?
"Due to the amount of magic pumped into his body, he had acute magic poisoning."
"Luisa, what is your secret?"
Luisa : I'm gay.
I think Alma had a mini stroke as soon as those words left her mouth.
"What is your question for Damien?"
Luisa : How do you keep your hair so well maintained?
"A shower everyday, I shampoo twice and condition once. I also comb my hair after each time I rinse the shampoo and conditioner out."
"Camilo, what is your secret?"
Camilo : My gift uses a lot of energy so I need to eat a lot more than everybody else and my gift hurts me badly if I stay in a certain form for too long.
"What is your question for Damien?"
Camilo : I'll...ask later.
My head slumped forward onto the table in relief as Granny laughed at my misery.
"Alright. Mirabel, what is your secret?"
Mirabel : I'm a witch.
She let her wings out and antenna out and flapped them a bit.
"What is your question for Damien?"
"Will I get a staff?"
"Yeah, I teach you how to wield one after you master the wind."
"Antonio, what is your secret?"
Antonio : I speak to Tio Bruno's rat friends to get spoiler for his telenovela shows.
"Do you have a question for Damien?"
Antonio : It's not a question. Is that okay with you?
"Of course sweet boy."
Antonio : Please treat Camilo well! Even though Tio Bruno is Camilo's papi, his is still my big brother!
I went ten shades of red.
"This Witches Council is completed."
I practically threw myself out the door and hid in my potion room. I could hear everybody laugh and get ushered out by Selkie and Granny.
"Damien, I'm going back home now! I'll be back to visit in one week! See you then dearie!"
I heard a faint knock on the door, so I cracked it open. I saw a red Camilo and opened it wider, now looking like a bell pepper.
"I'm your life partner?"
"Ye-yeah."
"Wow. Um, does this mean we should go on a date?"
"Only if you want to."
"I..um.."
He sheepishly nodded, the blush on his face going down his neck.
"When I first saw you, a sort of force was pulling me to you."
I smirked.
"Oh?"
I reached my hand behind him and wrapped it around his waist, gently pulling him toward me.
"A pull you say?"
I widened my eyes and pulled myself away from him.
"I am, so sorry! I was easier to control my impulses when you were unaware and, dios mio, this is not how I wanted to do this."
I wrung my hands through my hair. Camilo stood in front of me and pulled my hands from my hair carefully. I couldn't anymore and hugged him closely, burying my nose into his neck.
Toffee and oranges. An odd combination in itself, but to me...It was utterly intoxicating. I realized what I was doing and flung myself to the wall.
"I'm sorry!"
"Damien. I...I want to show you something."
"Wha-what is it?"
He took my hand and pulled me out of the door and out of his Casita. We kept walking through thick foliage until we reach a serene flower meadow with a calm stream. There was a thick yellow blanket on the ground with a picnic basket on it.
"You...set this up for...us?"
"Well, not exactly. I have this blanket here for when it gets to be too much for me to handle and I need to destress and remember what I look like. I don't know what the basket is."
I walked forward, preparing a shield for Camilo. I looked inside the basket and saw sandwiches, a couple bottles of water, and a covered plate. Under the cloth were arepas shaped like chameleons and my potion vials. There was a bright blue flower with a yarn butterfly under the plate.
"Your prima and hermana planned this."
"Dolores and Isabella?"
"Close, Mirabel and Isabella."
I showed him the butterfly and flower. He blushed bright red and fell back on the blanket.
"Your familia is very interesting."
"You've no idea. What about you? Tell me about your family."
I sat next to him and handed him a vial shaped arepa.
"Well, I was once a human."
"Really? I had no idea! Could've fooled me!"
"Oh hush. From what I remember, I was maybe three years old? I was running through a forest. I can't remember what I was running from. Just that if I didn't run, I would never see the following day. I was covered in blood and scrapes and I was starving. That's when I met her. Madam Sofia Calderis. After we locked eyes, I succumbed to my injuries and passed out. I still have a nasty scar on my back. When I woke up, Mama Sofia was changing the bandages she put on me and shoved a potion down my throat immediately when she noticed I was awake."
I laughed solemnly at the memory.
"She was a real hag, Mama. She wouldn't let me do anything for weeks until I was screaming at her to leave me alone. I tried to run away from the cottage hundreds of times, but she always found me and brought me back; fixing whatever bruises happened in the forest. It wasn't until I asked her how she kept finding me, did she start teaching me witchcraft. Learning my affinity was terrifying. You go before the Witches of Old and they look down with a knowing gaze. For a little kid, that is the most terrifying thing ever. You should've seen Mirabel! I thought she was gonna wet herself, poor thing,"
I flopped on my back and stared up at my hand. My witch's symbol was a foxes face. It symbolised I was as crafty as as the mischievous animal, that I could alway think of a way to get out of a sticky situation. A thick black ring used to circle it, but the ring symbolised you were apart of a coven. I was apart of Mama's Sofia's coven and after he was killed, the circle faded to a near nonexistent line.
"Honing my abilities and training my Aquakinesis was no easy task, despite it being one of the easiest elements to master. When Mama wasn't looking I would sneak outside to skip my studies and play with the Fae. That's how I got magic poisoning. A lot. Without realizing it, I was building up an immunity to Fae magic."
"Is that why those fairies called you a defect?"
"No. Those disgusting creatures thrive on negativity, self doubt, hatred, and anger. They can't harm anybody with their magic unless the creature gives up on life. Then they offer a sweet, painless escape. It was horrifying to watch. I stumbled upon the gruesome sight when I was eight."
I brought my hand to my mouth.
"They were mocking a lady about her dead child, saying it was all her fault. Then they offered her a way to be with her child again. She unknowingly agreed to the deal to the painless escape and they tore her apart, bit by bit. She felt no pain, but it was horrifying. That's not why I'm labeled as a defect though. Mama was receiving guests when I was ten. She told me to stay in my room and practice my potions, but I got curious."
I took a deep, calming breath.
"Mama was negotiating crystals and ivory for her staff, but the seller saw me on the staircase. Now understand, it's very rare in this century, but the oldest witches still living, eat children. Because their not old enough to fight back, and...because they're tender and more juicy than a fully grown human. Those were the reasons I heard, while I was trying to fight for my tiny ten year old life. That's where those stories come from about witches eating little kids. It used to be a huge problem three hundred years ago. As she tried to tear my heart out, she broke my core.
I held the area below my heart, clutching my shirt. I was shaking and tears rolled down my face. Camilo sat behind me and pulled my upper body onto his stomach. I flipped onto my stomach and hugged him, burying my face into his stomach.
"Since my core's been damaged I have to be careful with my magic output. That's why I'm a defect. I suffer through magical exhaustion once a month. I need a special potion to negate the effects and to make sure I don't slip into a magically induced coma. I hate this and it's why Burlona Fae are attracted to me. I'm a hotbed of negativity."
Tears stained his ruana at this point, but he pet my hair back so soothingly, I nearly fell asleep.
"Why did you pour so much of your heart out to me?"
"Because your my Vita Socium. I can't keep secrets from you and vice versa. I'm supposed to protect you and worship the very air you breathe. Your irreplaceable mi vida."
I tilted my head to the side and smirked at his red face. I pulled myself up until our faces were inches apart.
"Camilo. May I kiss you?"
He squeaked and nodded, face burning shany shades more of red. I closed the distance. Our lips met in a gentle, passionate dance. When we broke for air, I gently bumped our foreheads together and gazed into his eyes, a light dusting of pink across my nose.
The look in Camilo's eyes made me dive right back in. It was passionate still, but more heated and firey.
"Camilo, we don't have to go farther if you don't want to."
"Right, we can't do anything outside. You can come to my room."
I lit up like a light and jumped to my feet. I swirled my hands around and made a transport bubble. I walked through with Camilo and we appeared in my bedroom. I pushed him on my bed and crawled over him.
"Get ready."
