Also, a short history lesson:

Lafayette was a dick.
Especially in his later years.
He cheated on Adrienne with at least two different women, Aglaé de Hunolstein (their affair started even before he went to America) and Diane de Simiane (the affair lasted over 30 years!). Adrienne was surprisingly tolerant over the whole thing since she thought it was her fault and that she wasn't good enough as a wife and mother. There's a high chance that she became depressed because of this, too.
And to this day, Lafayette is seen as a model husband in France :D..
