16 | The Burning Maiden Dance
EREN
It'd been a full month since their first kiss. Eren wanted more than just a lip smack from Faldrey, he wanted to taste, to search, to seek deeper into his full, rich taste. He wanted the wet warmness that was his tongue, but he settled on going with the pace Faldrey had set. There was absolutely no need to rush things.
They had continued to meet at the watchtower at the rear wall almost every night. Any night Eren couldn't meet up with Byron, his beloved, it was either because he was too busy with the occasional meetings in the Fire Throne room, or because of some random feast in the Great Hall. He felt incomplete on these kind of days, there was no feast or merriment for him if Byron wasn't there.
He yearned for Byron day, night and in his dreams. He'd learnt to control the telepathic connection between them. He'd learnt to transfer his own feeling of happiness to Byron whenever he felt sad, even if he was more than a heartbeat away from him.
Eren was slowly drifting off into a dreamless nap, he was exhausted. The council meetings had started to become too frequent and long lasting. They seemed to be talking about putting more attention into the Flame Breather army in case of a war.
They were making plans to host an Infernal Tournament to recruit new Stoichi fire Dakyres into the Flame Breather army. Eren thought it was a total was waste of time and gold pieces, because there wasn't going to a war in the nearest future.
They were allies with the westerners and the other tribes were too broken, and honestly almost too scanty to pose a threat to them.
Sighing and sinking deeper into his heavenly mattress, he regretted not paying close attention to Byron on that faithful day he decided to suprise him. If he was attentive enough he would've felt Byron coming closer to him, and he wouldn't have seen him in such a state. Everything that happened could've been averted.
Eren suddenly felt a pang of dread and a gentle chime before all of a sudden he felt hot, incredibly hot. His room had a normal temperature and it wasn't even a hot day, it'd rained that morning, so the heat was caused by something else. Something dangerous.
Shooting up from his bed, he pressed his fingers against his temples to muffle the chiming sound so he could think, but it only got louder and louder, and more frequent. He felt like he was burning.
Byron!
His heart momentarily stopped. He shot up from his bed, completely agile and enraged. putting on his mask, he quickly dashed out of his chamber-room and followed the sound. It wasn't coming from his sister's chambers, the uncertainty of what Byron might be going through fueled his rage and increased the amount of steps he took in a second.
He found himself heading towards the spa and relaxation chamber buildings, he pondered what Byron might be doing there that had him dinging like the gigantic bells I'm the castle turrets.
Hastening towards the source of the chimes that seemed to rise a few decibels every time he took a step closer, his body felt hot, and that was not just the heat of the rage within him. Something else made him feel hot; like he was in the heart of a burning forest.
Finally making it into the stone chambers of the building, he scanned hallway after hallway. He'd only been here a hand full of times with his father for their occasional Stoichi flow massages.
Getting annoyed, he sped out towards the last building in the area where the lounge was. The sound was just above his head, he knew it, he just had to reach out and get to it. He just had to reach out and save his beloved.
Hearing noises from behind the door that led into the lounge with the orthopaedic wooden beds, he kicked the door open, not caring to know if it was locked or not.
The sight before him almost made him run mad.
Byron was in a circle of provoked blue flames. Tears running down his eyes as he stared at the flames in complete horror. Eren got a quick glimpse of a burning wooden cottage close to sea, but he brushed it aside.
Taking his eyes away from Byron, he slowly took his now bright yellow eyes, mad with rage, to the laughing figure of his twin sister.
Speeding up to her, immediately gaining her attention because he was anything but quiet or subtly in his movement.
"What the ravenous dragons are you doing Metsumi?!" He hollered.
She stopped laughing, when she saw the colour in his eyes.
"Oh hey little brother, nice of you to join us. I just finished from the spa, got the best massage I've had in ages from Byron here and he's about to entertain me with the Burning Maiden Dance," she leisurely sat up from the adjustable wooden bed and scooted to the right end, making space for her brother to sit. "Come sit, join me," she tapped the space beside her.
Eren felt like invoking the hottest of flames he could ever manage to muster to burn her to ashes, but he took fast deep breaths to calm himself. He couldn't kill his sister.
He couldn't commit sororicide.
"The Burning Maiden Dance? Does he strike you as a fire Stoichi Dakyre?" Eren hissed through gritted teeth, the loud cries of Byron filling the area.
"No, but he strikes me as a good healer," Metsumi frowned, not taking a liking to her brother's tone. "You see back in his tribe he was a very good healer and was also well-versed in women's craft, he had no interest in becoming a warrior," she continued, sounding delighted with herself, "don't you find him utterly adorable in a dress? To ever think you tried to dissuade me from making him wear a dress, how stupid you must feel? You wouldn't have been attracted to him if he wasn't wearing a dress, now would you? Or do you like the thing between his legs despite the kind of clothing it is in?" She spat venomously, nursing a smug look.
Metsumi's words had already caught on fire, burning to ashes before getting to him. At this point he had attained a certain level of madness, he wasn't rational or ready for Metsumi's mind games.
"Abate your flames Metsumi," he stated sternly, loud and clear without sparing even a second to blink.
"Oh," she muttered holding a hand over her mouth, before slowly taking her gaze to the wailing boy in the circle of fire. She increased the height and intensity of the veil of blue fire that encircled him, the flames were now almost as tall as Byron who literally just shrieked. "Or what are you going to, Eren? He's my maid servant after all, I can do whatever I want with him."
Taking a deep breath and controlling the madness he was welcoming, he took his gaze away from his sister's.
Without saying another word he started walking towards where Byron stood; in the middle of the blue furnace, crying out in pain.
"What are you doing?" His sister asked looking at the back of his head. "Stop! Stop that, Eren! Don't you dare near my burning maiden! He's mine! Father gave him to me!" She raved, springing up from her chair.
The other maid servants scurried away from her, in other to not become victims of her outburst.
But Eren ignored. On getting to the burning ring of fire he distinguished the flames in his path, creating a safe clearance and breaking the circle.
Despite not being burnt, the skin on Byron's face was a deep red. Eren thought perhaps it could be from all the crying, because his dress was still in tact. Not even a loose thread was burnt.
Stretching out a hand to Byron, he looked at him with compassionate eyes. It took all the control he had to not smash his lips into Byron's, kissing him right there and then in the middle of his sister's blue furnace, draining him of all of his sadness.
Byron reached out and took the strong, protective hand of his lover. Following him as he led him through the path he had created.
The second they were both at a safe distance from the circle, Eren let go of his sister's flames and watched as the whole circle engulfed in merciless blue fire. There was no safe space in the middle anymore, it was just like a flourishing pyre.
"Did you really plan on roasting us?" Eren asked his sister with disappointment in his voice.
"Take him back into the flame," she spoke in an eerily low tone, keeping her eyes fixed on her now empty, out of control ring of fire.
"What's wrong with you Metsumi?" Eren stood in front of Byron, shielding him. "Why are you this spiteful and bitter?"
Metsumi burst into her infamous cackle of impending doom.
"Spiteful and bitter," she muttered to herself with a wry smile on her lips. Reducing the raging blue flames untill she finally made it dissipate, leaving only yellow fire sparks. "Give me back my maid servant then, I've put out the fire. No more Burning Maiden Dance," she slowly turned to face them after putting out her fire, holding out her hand as if Byron was a piece of stick he was just going to hand over.
"No, you're not yourself," Eren protested.
"You're in my head now too? Do you perchance know what I'm thinking? Because if you do, you would give me back my maid and be on your merry way back to your chambers."
Eren furrowed his eyebrows at her, what did she mean by 'too'. But he stood still and unflinching in front of a weeping Byron, shielding and protecting him.
"Fine then, I've tried to reason with you but you've refused to comply, little brother." She began rolling her shoulders and snapping her neck, creating an irritating cracking sound. When she was done stretching out she narrowed her eyes at Eren, "since you've refused to give him to me, I'll bring the flame to you abominations," she spoke with an menacing smirk tugging at her lips.
With that she took in a deep breath and fisted the air with both of her hands at different intervals, sending two big blue seeking fireballs flying across the room and rocketing towards them.
Eren knew his sister was rash, but he didn't know she was as insanely foolhardy as this. Things had definitely gotten a lot worse with her.
With little or no time to think, he first pushed Byron away from his back just in case. The desire to protect his beloved fuelled him, the yellow glint in his eyes intensified, turning into a fiery yellow.
He only had to stare down the first fireball to make it evanesce.
Facing the second slower blue flame which was shooting towards him, he shot an even greater one from his palms.
His fireball counteracted his sister's blue fireball, making it disappear completely, but his own ball kept rocketing across the room and eventually hit the ground just in front of Metsumi, missing her, but exploding in her face.
The explosion sent her flying backwards until she hit a wall. Her beautifully banded hair scattered on her head, making strands hang and fall into her face.
She was currently on her hands and knees on the floor, panting and looking up at her brother through her eyelashes with furious blue eyes.
"Did you just shoot at me?" She stated the obvious.
Eren's heart was beating faster than he could think, the only motive he had was to protect Byron, and he was going to do just that, no matter the cost. He knew his fireball wouldn't hit his sister, he had shot it so it would explode just around her and knock her off balance. He didn't expect the blast wave to be so powerful as to send her flying almost three metres backwards.
He'd noticed that his fire Stoichi had become much more powerful than it had ever been since he started hearing and feeling Byron's emotions. But now, being faced with the task of protecting his beloved, he had just gotten a glimpse of just how powerful Byron made him. He dematerialised a blue flame fireball, not just a regular fireball, with only his eyes.
"Go! Run to your chambers and stay there! Don't stop, don't listen to anyone. I'm sending you to lock yourself up in your servant room!" Eren yelled the instruction at Byron, whom he'd pushed to the floor when he braced himself for the incoming attack.
"If you dare leave this lounge I'll get you turned into a eunuch, then we'll find out just what exactly my brother likes between the legs," Metsumi taunted.
Eren watched as Byron slowly up got up from the floor, vacillating between the two royal orders.
"Would you rather listen to your Mistress instead of the Young Tal Dane?! Go I command you!" Eren purposely added a glow to his eyes to further coerce Byron into obeying his order.
In less than a second, Byron made up his mind and sped out of the room. Eren felt his strong sadness as he raced further out of the spa and relaxation chamber buildings. Running, and running without stopping.
Metsumi flounced to her feet, fixing hair once again and getting it into the ribbon band. She had the most maleficent smile on her face.
"Let's see what father has to say about this," she sassed in a low, deep tone which gave away her evil intent, sending her darkened gaze to her brother.
Eren knew he'd just made the biggest fuss ever.
Beneath the rage that came over him lied the fear of what might happen. He knew it was highly unlikely that his father would be fair in judgement, he favoured Metsumi over him.
But whatever the punishment might turn out to be, he was certain he would not let as much as a single, silky strand of Byron's brown hair get hurt.
Not while he was still alive and breathing.
