Moth to the Flame

Author's notes: This is a submission to Magenkop's Romance/Humor contest ("Oh! So you think I'm cute when I'm angry? Well, get ready because I'm about to be goddamned GORGEOUS!"), with "cute" replaced with "hot".

For background information, Selrick is a human sorcerer and the leader of the ruling council of Asarlon. Kirin is a demon (or "chaekrin", as they call themselves) and Safi is half-demon, half-human. Safi and Selrick are lovers and soul-bound to each other through an unbreakable spell known as "pact", but Selrick also has on-and-off physical relationship with Kirin.

Letters. Documents. Reports. A mountain of paperwork that arrived to his desk at regular intervals. Not something Selrick was very fond of, but he didn't trust anyone else with it either. With practiced ease he separated the military reports - especially ones from his elite units of battle sorcerers hunting down the monsters the war between the empire of Tolia and the raiders of Leumair had spawned - from the more mundane affairs. Other council members might be able to deal with the latter without messing things up too badly.

This one would require an official reply...His fingers met nothing as he reached inside one of the desk drawers. His gaze turned to the half-demon lazying around in the comfortable chair in his office, the long waterfall of silver and pale golden locks cascading around him. "Safi, I've told you countless times not to touch anything here. Where did you put my council seal?"

Safi sat up straight and stretched languidly.

Selrick crossed his arms, a small smile playing on his lips. His lover knew exactly how to appear seductive no matter what he did. "Work first, play later," he said firmly.

"I didn't do anything. Kirin took it."

"Kirin?"

"Hmm-m," Safi hummed. "While you were out."

So the brat was bored. Selrick would have had to be blind not to realize that Safi was involved in some way - he trapped his desk and office with arcane wards just because Kirin could get really annoying when he wanted attention and didn't get it. Despite the demon blood flowing in his veins and the natural talent for magic in it, he had never bothered to learn anything even a bit more sophisticated. But Safi...no matter what kind of spells Selrick crafted, the half-breed could always unravel them.

"And did he say where he'd be going with it?" Selrick asked.

"The usual place. You might want to take your sword along."

Safi was clearly enjoying this far too much. Selrick walked over to him and pulled his head back by his hair sharply. "I don't need a sword to put a beast back to his place. As for you..." He leaned closer and breathed to Safi's ear. "I will have to think of a suitable punishment for tonight."

"The usual place" was the empty training field and the abandoned barrack next to it behind the council fortress. Kirin was waiting for him on the roof of the barracks, his appearance completely human thanks to the disguise spell woven to the silvery collar he wore every time he came to the capital of Asarlon. Although probably everybody in the fortress was already aware that the young man with bright orange hair and sharp features definitely was not a human.

Kirin hopped down to the ground gracefully and walked to meet up with the sorcerer. "Already done?" he asked teasingly.

Selrick held out his hand. "Spare me the games and just give it back."

Kirin grinned in a very arrogant manner. He was itching for some action, and Selrick was the only human close to his match in combat. "Make me."

Selrick spoke a single arcane word, and the demon fell to his knees, the collar around his neck making his body feel unbearably heavy.

"You're no fun..." Kirin muttered.

Selrick grabbed his chin roughly. "I have no time to amuse you, brat. Where is my council seal?"

"Heh. You know, you're hot when you're angry." Kirin grinned again. He was not afraid of the sorcerer. Shows of strength were an everyday occurrence to chaekrin, and he loved baiting Selrick into fights...and what usually followed after. "Surely you have time to play some?"

"Hot, you say..." Selrick's voice gained a very dangerous tone. He whispered a short spell and his free hand started glowing with fiery aura. He brought his fingers to almost touch Kirin's cheek, letting the demon feel the searing heat. "Is this hot enough for you?"

Kirin swallowed nervously. Surely Selrick wouldn't...Then again, he knew how dangerous the sorcerer could be and that fire was his strongest element - it was the one he always used in real combat when his sword was not enough. Just thinking of all those battles they had fought side-by-side was enough to make him dizzy. "Not nearly enough," he answered, knowing it was stupid but unable to resist.

Selrick snarled and pressed his hand against the demon's shoulder, watching in satisfaction as Kirin squirmed but stubbornly kept quiet. Why did the brat always have to piss him off intentionally?

"Alright, alright, I yield," Kirin breathed out shakily. The sorcerer had toned the power of the spell down, just enough to make his instincts react to perceived danger but not enough to actually cause injuries that wouldn't heal in a matter of hours.

Selrick smiled. A smile that was more cruel than reassuring. "Good." He dragged Kirin back to his feet. "Now be a good boy and do as you're told."

Right, that council seal. He had almost forgotten the little trinket.

However, that was not what Selrick had foremost in his mind. The adrenaline coursing in his veins was addicting, and he had no interest in returning to his mountain of paperwork just yet. Right now, he wanted to make the demon submit beyond just yielding in a fight. "You wanted to play, didn't you? Let's see how much heat you can take."

Safi hummed to himself as he returned to the quarters he shared with Selrick. Aware of Kirin's plan, he had scouted out a good window to watch the two beforehand, at least until they had disappeared inside the empty barracks. Selrick really was hot when he got angry. And Kirin was an expert in pushing just the wrong buttons. The young demon was very attractive too.

Too bad that Selrick was so much against threesomes.
