24. Epilogue
Answer: Black and Blue by James TW
I'm so sorry it's so late! You are all amazing and I suck!!!!!!!! I got stuck at work and then there was so much traffic!
Alec was sitting at the kitchen table reading a new book when he heard the front door slam against the wall. He jumped to his feet just as what sounded like a picture frame fell to the ground, shattering the glass. He ran even faster when he heard loud sobs.
"Daddy?" A little voice called out. "Daddy, where are you?"
He ran to the little boy and kneeled in front of him. He grabbed the boy's shoulders. "Are you okay? What's wrong?" Alec demanded of the boy in a scared voice.
"Daddy," The boy leapt into his arms and Alec kissed his fuzzy black hair.
"Dyson, I need to know why you're crying." Alec rubbed the boy's back as he continued to sob.
"Lucy-" The rest of what the boy was saying got muffled by his mouth being against Alec's shirt.
"Dyson," Alec pulled the boy back so he could see his dark face covered by streaks from tears. "What happened? Is Lucy okay?"
"She said that I'm adopted!" Dyson flung his arms back around his dad and let out a new stream of wails. Alec stood up with the small boy in his arms and looked over his head to see Magnus leaning against the wall in the hallway.
They shared a silent laugh at the boy's dramatics and then Magnus winked. Alec was grateful that Magnus always knew what to do. Of course, neither of them expected to have to deal with this exact situation, for one Dyson was half African American and Magnus was tanner than Alec yet he was still only a slight golden color.
"Hey, buddy," Magnus rubbed Dyson's head in the way he had since he was first born and they took him home. The little boy began to sob harder and louder.
"Think we need a single or a double?" Magnus asked and the boy's crying softened just a bit.
"We better make it a double." Alec winked at Magnus.
"On the rocks." Dyson's little voice was shaky but Alec and Magnus could tell that he was calming down.
"A double on the rocks." Magnus kissed his head. "Coming right up."
Magnus hurried off to the kitchen and Alec carried their son to the living room so they could talk. It was Dyson's favorite room in the whole house and they all knew it. It probably had to do with the fact that they usually tried to get him to stay out of it.
"Are you ready to talk?" Alec asked him sweetly as they sat down. Dyson sat back and wiped at his nose and eyes with his arm.
"Can I see them?" Dyson asked and Alec nodded. He stood up again and set Dyson on the big, white chair. He then pulled off his hoodie so he was only in a short sleeved shirt.
He kneeled in front of his son and held out his arms for him to see. It still sometimes tugged at his heart when he saw them or when people touched his arms, but it was more like a shadow of pain. He could handle it especially if it helped others.
Dyson ran his small fingers over the black lines and bright colors feeling the harsh, jagged scars underneath that were hidden by the design. His dad's had told him that a bad man had hurt his daddy when he was young but then another man had fixed him.
"Do you want to talk now?" Alec asked him, cupping his little face in his hand.
"Why did she say that?"
"Because you are adopted."
He burst into tears again. "What does that mean?"
Alec chuckled then grabbed the boy's hands. "It just means that we searched across the world looking for you and when we did we brought you home." Trying to explain it in a way that a five year old would understand.
"But, you don't love me? Rebeca says that Uncle Jace and Aunt Clary love her because she's their blood." His bottom lip quivered.
"Oh, Dyson, blood doesn't make love. We love you so much because you are ours. Blood has nothing to do with that. Plus, do you want to know a secret?" Alec leaned in closer with a smile on his face.
"When you were a tiny baby you were very sick and you needed blood. Guess whose blood they put in you?"
"Who?" Dyson blinked.
"Mine." Alec showed him a tiny scar on his arm. "This was where they took it out."
"Where did they put it in?" The boy asked as he touched the small scar.
"You don't have a mark from it. You were too little." Alec explained just as Magnus walked in balancing three bowls with Lucy behind already digging into her ice cream. The little red head looked far too innocent for the type of trouble she caused but it didn't make them love her any less.
"Here you are, darling." Magnus let Alec take the two bowls from him and Alec gave Dyson a bowl of his favorite ice cream, Rocky Road. The boy didn't wait before digging in.
"Lucy," Alec raised his eyebrow at her. "What happened?"
"Dad, are lectured me." Lucy, their 11 year old who acted like she was going on 21 rolled her eyes.
"Lu," Magnus shook his head at her.
"Fine." She threw her hands in the air and set her bowl down. "Dyson, I'm sorry that I told you the truth."
"Lu!" Both of her Dad's shouted.
"Whatever." She took Dyson's hand. "I'm sorry for saying it how I did. It really doesn't matter. I'm adopted too which makes us cooler than those other kids because do you remember the game Zelda?"
"Yeah," Dyson smiled.
"Well, it's like in that. They went on a quest and spent years looking for the perfect kids. When they found us, they brought us home."
"Did you get gold, too?" Dyson asked looking up at Alec who was holding back tears after watching the cute exchange.
"We did. It was you." Alec nodded.
"Cool!" Dyson jumped up and threw his fist in the air. "We're the best family ever!"
"Except when you're grounded." Lucy rolled her eyes at Magnus.
"You're still grounded, Lu. You spray painted the neighbors dog." Magnus forced himself to not laugh.
"He needed some color on him." She shrugged.
"Anyway, can I got back outside?" Lucy asked, her ice cream all gone.
"Yes, but only for another hour and stay in the yard!" Alec ended shouting as she skipped away.
"Can I go too." Dyson asked.
"Sure, but you can finish your ice cream first." Alec smiled. "Are you excited for school to start tomorrow?"
"Yeah." Dyson started bouncing on the couch.
"And do you remember the most important rule?" Alec asked him.
"Never let anyone hurt your friends." Dyson beamed up at his dad's.
Alec nodded. "But, what about if they're not your friend?"
"You're silly?" Dyson giggled and Alec gave Magnus confused look.
"How am I silly?" Alec asked him.
"I'm Dyson Freaking Bane, who wouldn't want to be my friend?"
Magnus and Alec laughed. Their kid was going to be alright.
"That's true." Magnus high-fived him.
"Did you teach him that?" Alec asked.
"Hell yes I did." Magnus smiled.
"Done!" Dyson dropped his bowl on the floor and ran outside.
Alec walked to Magnus and wrapped his arms around his husband. "Promise me that he won't ever lose that attitude."
"I promise. We'll protect him and Lucy so they'll never be hurt like we were." Magnus kissed Alec. "Also, I think you need to teach him about putting his dirty dish in the sink."
"I do?" Alec chuckled and cocked an eyebrow at Magnus.
"Yeah, remember we made a deal that you'd be the hardass and I'd be the fun parent." Magnus kissed Alec's nose.
"I feel like you're lying to me." Alec blushed.
"I wouldn't say I'm lying."
"Yeah, but you also agreed that the Johnson's dog needed more color. Clearly your judgment is not to be trusted." Alec whispered letting his lips brush against Magnus's.
"I chose you didn't I?" Magnus kissed him softly.
"I'm pretty sure I chose you." Alec smiled against his lips.
"Fine, we can do it together."
"Tomorrow."
"Yes, for now why don't we use the time we have to do something fun?"
"Play scrabble?" Alec wiggled his eyebrows.
"Yeah, scrabble." Magnus laughed at their code word for their alone time activities.
"I love you."
"I love you, more." Magnus lifted Alec and spun in a circle. "I'll race up to our room!"
A/N Well it's over... for now.... I was serious about making this into a full-length novel. So, don't worry about it being gone for too long. It will explain what actually happened to Sebastian and his friends and more importantly what happened after they got back from Vegas. Plus, I know some of you have been hating on Jace, in the full book I think I'll explain his character better. I can't wait to share more of it with you and I'll let you know when it's ready!
Thank you seriously, so much for going on this journey with me. I am so amazed at how great you all are. You're seriously the best people ever! Love you all! And don't worry cute, Malec one shots are on their way!
