To Never Die

Hey everyone who has stuck it out! Sorry for not writing lately. Hopefully, you'll enjoy this extra long one-shot.

"Magnus Bane, that flashy warlock, is coming right?" Alec's mom asked as they rolled another dead shadowhunter into the room. It was the third in as many days. Izzy had done all she could to help but they couldn't figure out what was happening to them.

"Yes," Alec nodded and kept his face blank. "He said that he would be around soon." Alec couldn't stop the flutter of his fingers just like he knew Magnus had done when he had told him that on the phone an hour ago.

"Around?" His mother shook her head and made a disgusted noise. "Soon?"

"That's helpful." Jace chuckled and gave Alec a look. Of course his mom didn't like that answer. To her, and all of the other shadowhunters the downworlders were there to cause trouble and to serve them.

"He'll be here." Alec said, more to assure himself than her. He considered calling Magnus again, but clenched his fist around his phone instead.

"He better be." His mom scowled. "I'll get your father. By the time I'm back I expect him to be here."

"I'll do my best." Alec shrugged once she turned away from him. She looked back and gave him a look that told him trying wouldn't be good enough.

"Do you want me to call him?" Jace asked with a wink. "I mean it's hard to resist a beautiful hunter such as myself."

Alec smacked his best friend in the chest. "Why don't you go check on the little girl and leave the real work to me?"

Alec looked at his phone. "Just call him. It's not weird. It's for work." He whispered to himself. He hit Magnus' number and put the phone to his ear.

"Alexander." Magnus' silky voice soothed all of Alec's anxiety instantly. "Two times in one day. To what do I owe this pleasure?"

"I, uh, was just you know." Alec took a deep breath. How long had it been since he last breathed?

"I am on my way. I apologize for the delay but I had to take care of something. As much as I'd love to see your delightful smile and that twinkle in your blue eyes I do have other responsibilities." Magnus said with a hint of laughter in his voice. Did he know that his compliments always made Alec blush?

"I understand completely." Alec said quickly. Why was he so out of breath? "We're in the morgue."

"We?" Magnus asked.

"Well, just me right now." Alec felt a shift in the air.

"Hello, Alexander." Magnus said as he walked through the portal. The wards must have been lowered so he could enter.

Alec looked at his phone then back to Magnus. "Hi."

"It's been too long since..." Magnus said and they both knew that he was talking about their date that hadn't really gone great.

"Yeah." Alec ran his fingers through his hair. "How have you been?"

"Wonderful, as always." Magnus smiled, but there seemed to be something behind the smile. Alec wondered if Magnus would ever be honest with him. Was he honest with anyone? Alec wasn't so he couldn't judge him. He just felt sad. Alec was lonely sometimes, but he couldn't imagine being lonely for an eternity.

"Alec, have you heard from that overpriced, flashy warlock yet?" His dad asked as the door opened.

"Dad." Alec gasped and looked at where Magnus had been, but there was no one.

"What?" His dad rolled his eyes.

"He's helping us. You don't have to treat him like-" Alec stopped talking as soon as his dad raised his hand and opened his mouth.

"Like a demon?" His dad cocked an eyebrow. "He is a demon, Alec. Just because he's helped us a couple of times for a lot of money, I might add, does not mean that he is anything other than a filthy downworlder. He's a mix of the most evil thing and the weakest. Demon and mundane. He is worse than either because he thinks he's better."

"Knows." Magnus smiled as he entered the room, using the door this time. "He knows he's better."

Alec opened his mouth to apologize but Magnus twirled his hand to stop him. "I've heard much worse." Magnus looked to Robert. "Now, for my fee."

Alec was in the room but he didn't hear another word as Magnus went to work. All he could think about was how badly he wanted to take back his dad's words.

"Alec?" His mom had said his name at least once already based on her irritated voice.

"Yes." He nodded at her to tell her he was listening.

"Walk Magnus out." She said then followed his dad out of the room.

"You don't have to walk me out." Magnus said with a hint of annoyance.

"It's fine." Alec opened the door and Magnus walked out.

"I see." Magnus cocked an eyebrow at him. "Need to keep an eye on the downworlder scum."

"No." Alec felt shame burn through his body. "I'm sorry for that."

Magnus smiled. "No need to worry. I'm a big boy."

"Still." Alec frowned.

"Really." Magnus smiled deeper. "It's fine. I don't care."

"Did you want to get some dinner?" Alec asked, hoping that would help his guilt.

"No." Magnus winked. "But, thank you, Alexander. I have plans already."

"Okay." Alec saw the hollow pain in Magnus' eyes that he probably masked very well normally. Alec watched Magnus walk away and made a decision that he would follow him just to make sure he got to where he was going safely.

Alec followed Magnus all around the city. They stopped at cemetery after cemetery and Alec just got more confused. Where by the angel was Magnus going. He stayed back so he could only hear a whisper of Magnus's voice. After two hours Alec couldn't take the mystery any longer. He stepped closer.

"Some people say that you die the moment your name is last said." Magnus said without looking behind him to where Alec was.

"Oh." Alec wasn't sure what to say. He walked over to where Magnus was crouched down in front of a tombstone.

"Alice Marie Longfellow." Magnus simply said and stood. He walked to the next tombstone. "Richard T Longfellow."

"Did you know them?" Alec asked and Magnus finally looked at him. His eyes were yellow cat eyes. They were beautiful.

"Alexander Gideon Lightwood." Magnus smiled sadly. It didn't reach his eyes. "When you're an immortal people assume that you will never die. That's all they talk about. But they're wrong. You'll die alright, just not in a peaceful way. You die again and again; the shreds of who you once were scar you. You have to continue living in the shell of what once was a real person."

Alec's heart sank with the pain that Magnus must feel. He wanted to hug him, pull him closer, and never let him go. "What's your name?"

"Magnus Bane." Magnus frowned.

"No, what's your name?" Alec asked again, knowing that warlocks picked a name.

"Alexander," Magnus shook his head, "I died centuries ago."

Alec wanted to say more, but he just didn't have the words so instead he walked to the next tombstone. "Rachel Noel Smith."

Magnus sighed and continued walking with him. Together they read the names from all of the tombstones. It was a reverent task as they stayed silent except for reading. Once finished Magnus led the way to the street and Alec followed. They walked all the way to Magnus' apartment and went inside.

"Magnus?" Alec asked as he stood awkwardly in the doorway.

"I'll get the drinks." Magnus nodded to the couch so Alec walked in and took a seat.

"I'm sorry about my family." Alec finally said.

"No worries." Magnus brushed the words away with his hand.

"They treated you terribly." Alec frowned and felt a blush of embarrassment.

"It happens." Magnus snapped his fingers and two drinks appeared in his hands.

"It shouldn't." Alec took a drink from him.

"Yet it does."

"Magnus Gideon Bane." Alec smiled sweetly.

"Magnus Gideon Bane?" Magnus smiled and cocked an eyebrow.

"I figure that I have three real names that are my own so you can have one." Alec blushed, this time with embarrassment. "You know, so you don't have to die again. I'll always say your name."

Magnus was shocked. The never wordless warlock was speechless. He took Alec's drink and set both of them down on the coffee table. He moved closer to Alec and gently, painstakingly slow brushed his lips against Alec's.

"Thank you." He whispered before deepening the kiss.
