Sunflowers
A/N Sorry for taking forever to update. I've been working on the beauty in the destruction book and I decided that I'm just going to make it into its own thing. I'll post it soon. Here's just a chill oneshot. Hope you like it!
Alec sank back onto his bed letting his long legs dangle over the edge. It had been a damn long day all starting with a harsh wake-up speech from his father followed by another from his mother. They were his parents and he loved them but at the same time he hoped for them to leave soon. They had one of those relationships that was better with space between them. Not to mention the fact that they had only come back to the institute because of the annoying, little mundane.
All because of one stupid girl, his life had gone to shit overnight. If he was being honest with himself it wasn't just Clary. By the angel did he hate that name with a fiery passion hotter than hell! Izzy was playing into her hands, clearly showing her desperate need for another girl to be around. And then there was Jace. His parabatai. His best friend. His brother. His, well, the thing was that he wasn't his. That was the problem right?
Alec groaned and punched his pillow. Why did he have to like him? He knew he was straighter than a catholic priest running one of those camps to make kids straight. And yet, Alec had been stuck on him for years. He chose to stay in his shadow, watching, following, and supporting him because he loved him all the while knowing it would never be any more than unrequited love. Alec screamed into his pillow and rolled over so his face was smashed into his bed.
There was a knock at the door and Alec stayed quiet, hoping whoever it was would take a hint and leave. They didn't.
"Alec?" Jace walked into his room. Alec berated himself. He needed to remember to lock his door when he wanted to be alone.
"What?" Alec grumbled without moving. He felt the bed sink as Jace took a seat and finally Alec rolled over and sat up.
"You tell me what." Jace cocked an eyebrow at him.
"You're the one in my room, interrupting my peace and quiet." Alec glared at his friend.
"I could hear you grumbling and yelling," Jace said, meeting Alec's eyes as he rolled them.
"Good for you." Alec snorted. "Guess we don't have to check your ears."
"Alec," Jace gripped Alec's shoulder. "Talk to me. I know something's bothering you. Let me help."
Alec looked away. "That's the problem, Jace, you can't help. You're the problem. You're the one-" Alec jumped up hating that he had said so much. "Forget it. I need to leave. Patrol or something."
"I'll come."
"No."
"Yes."
"Jace, dammit, just leave me alone. I don't want to talk to you." Alec shouted. He never reacted like that. He was the calm, cool, collected one. Jace and Izzy were the ones who shouted and ran off. Alec was the silent, brooding type. But, not tonight. He didn't even grab a jacket, even though it was the middle of winter; he just ran.
He wandered around for a couple of hours thankful for having a rune to warm him up, but it had warn off a while ago. He was started to shiver. He should go home, but he didn't want to. Alec wasn't ready for that. He was turning the corner when someone grabbed his arm. He kicked back, making contact as the person grunted and he turned around with his fist at face level.
"Back off," Alec said angrily but then the venom dropped from his voice and his anger melted. "I'm sorry."
He dropped his fist and grabbed Magnus' shoulder as he was bent over trying to catch his breath. Alec was blushing fiercely. "Are you okay?"
Magnus took a deep breath and stood up. "I definitely thought our first contact with that body part would be more enjoyable." Magnus let out a pained chuckle and Alec blushed even worse when he understood what Magnus had said.
"Sorry." Alec winced. "Can I make it better?"
"You could kiss it."
Alec's eyes shot down then up to Magnus'. Magnus burst out laughing. "It was a joke, Alexander."
"Right," Alec said, still not sure if this was really happening.
"You're freezing." Magnus frowned at Alec and pulled his coat off before wrapping it around Alec's shoulders, making sure to slide his hand down to Alec's. "Here." Magnus took both of the stunned shadowhunter's hands into his own and used his magic to warm them up.
"Thanks." Alec smiled as the feeling in his fingers came back. Magnus' hands were like velvet, strong velvet.
"What are you doing out without a coat?" Magnus asked, only dropping his hands when Alec looked like he was going to bolt.
"Walking. Patrolling." Alec said, not convincingly. "Avoiding."
"I see." Magnus nodded his head then turned and walked away. Alec shook his head at the fastness of Magnus' retreat. Alec stood there, stunned.
"Hurry along, Alexander. We need a drink." Magnus called out over his shoulder without so much as a look back. Alec stayed for about half a second before realizing that the warlock was inviting him over. He sprinted after him and caught up just as he opened the gate to his apartment. Alec, if he had the time, would think about the fact that his wandering had led him straight to Magnus, but instead, he just followed him upstairs.
"Chairman Meow, I have someone who needs some comforting," Magnus said as they entered the apartment. Alec had only been here a couple of times, but it felt so familiar. That could be because of the many dreams that had brought him here. A cat wound its furry body between his ankles leaving white fur all over his black pants and boots.
"Go ahead. You'll feel better." Magnus motioned to the cat. "He'll let you pick him up."
"Okay." Alec reached down and the cat started to purr as he hugged him to his chest. "He's so fluffy."
"He's an asshole, but yes, he is fluffy." Magnus chuckled and rubbed the cat between its ears. "Sit down. I'll get drinks."
Alec didn't say anything, he just followed the command. He sat down, the cat jumped off his lap, and he drank. He lost count of drinks after four, but that was more than he had had in the past year probably so that was already pushing him past buzzed. He was talking and laughing loudly but he didn't care enough to stop. Magnus was touching his knee and he felt higher than a kite. Magnus' eyes flashed yellow and Alec giggled.
"Your eyes are pretty. They're like a sunflower. I like sunflowers. That's the yellow flower, right? I don't really know flower things. Do you? I think they smell good. Why do girls only get them? I want flowers. Why can't Alec get flowers? Alec," He giggled more and took another drink. "Everyone calls me Alec. It suits me, boring and average. I'm always in the back. The serious one. I like Alexander. He's cool, mysterious, special. You call me Alexander. I like you, you see me. You see me as Alexander, not Alec. Do you? Am I crazy? I think I am. I think." Alec leaned against Magnus and looked into his eyes. "You're a sunflower."
Magnus wanted to laugh but he knew that Alec was just being honest. Sure, he was drunk, but he was trying to let himself be real and Magnus loved it. Alexander was a beautiful being. He had been waiting to see this side of him. He wondered if he'd be able, to be honest, and open without being drunk. For now, he'd take drunk confessions.
"Sunflowers are my favorite," Alec whispered as his eyes closed.
"Why is that?" Magnus asked him as he let his arm wrap around Alec to pull him closer.
"What?" Alec asked and Magnus knew that he was asleep. Magnus could have used his magic to lift Alec but he wanted to feel him against his chest, so instead, he lifted him into his arms. He carried Alec to his bed and used his magic to pull the covers back. He laid him down and tucked him in after pulling off his boots. Magnus would have loved to lay down with him but it felt wrong so he went out to the couch and breathed in the musky smell of Alec until he fell asleep.
Alec gripped his head as the bright lights in the room pierced his eyes. "By the angel." He groaned.
"Good morning," Magnus said and Alec sprang up.
"Did I sleep here?" Alec asked.
"Yes." Magnus smiled and reached forward, only feeling a little hurt when Alec sank back. "I can help with the hangover."
"Oh." Alec stilled. "What happened?" He asked as Magnus touched his forehead and the pain disappeared.
"You came over, we drank, and then slept." Magnus said simply then after Alec looked at the bed and him a couple of times he added, "I slept on the couch."
"Oh, sorry." Alec frowned. "I don't drink much."
"I could tell." Magnus teased then he waved his hand and a beautiful, bright bunch of sunflowers appeared in his hand. "These are for you."
"Me?" Alec looked shocked and confused.
"You." Magnus smiled and pushed them into Alec's hand. "Men deserve flowers too, especially the cute ones."
Alec coughed. "Um, thanks." Alec looked at them and broke out into a big smile. "Want to know something about sunflowers?"
"I'd love to." Magnus smiled.
"When I was little I was alone a lot before Jace moved in with us." Alec set the sunflowers down on the bed and sat up better, with one leg bent and the other dangling off the bed.
"I'm sorry." Magnus frowned. He understood the pain of a lonely childhood.
"It's fine. I enjoyed it, most of the time. Izzy was there but she can be a little much, you know? Anyway, sometimes if I didn't want to be alone I would go for walks outside. One day I was sitting in a park and this woman was sitting on the bench across from me. She was crying, it was pretty annoying. She was heaving and sobbing. I was about to leave then a man walked up to her with a bouquet of sunflowers. She stood up and they kissed, which I thought was gross of course. But then he sat down with her and it struck me just how beautiful it was. She was smiling and he wiped her tears away."
Alec took a breath. He wasn't used to talking this much and he had never told a single soul about this moment, but he knew Magnus was the one to share it with.
"The man said to her that everyone loved roses, yet they wilted so quickly while sunflowers were strong and sturdy with a beauty that could last forever. He said that his love for her was like a sunflower, it would last."
Magnus was shocked to hear this romantic story from Alec. He wanted to hold onto him and never let him go. Magnus knew, in that moment, that his life would never be the same.
"It's weird. I get it." Alec frowned, embarrassed.
"It's beautiful," Magnus assured him. They were both quiet for a long time, both looking at the sunflowers and silently telling each other that they wanted something that could last forever. Alec stood up and pulled on his boots as they remained quiet. Then he took the flowers with him to the front door. He turned and looked at Magnus.
"I can't take these to the institute. Would you mind if I kept them here?" Alec asked, finally breaking the silence.
"Of course." Magnus smiled. "You'll have to come to visit them though. How about dinner tonight?"
"I can't," Alec said forcefully. "I mean, I have to patrol. For real. Another time?"
"Anytime. They'll be here waiting, forever." Magnus said.
A/N Hope you liked the oneshot. Do you want more like this? Love you all! Thanks for reading!
