Rome - Dermot Kennedy
A/N The next set of one-shots will be connected to songs. I get most of my inspiration from songs anyway and most of you probably already know that. I hope you enjoy and please share a song that you love or one that you want to see Malec through. If I can I'll write you a short story for any song that you pick.
"Magnus?" Alec said so quietly that he wondered if he hadn't actually said it. He couldn't say or do anything else though. Magnus had his back to him and was already walking away. Alec felt his face get wet as the rain started falling like the pieces of his heart. He wanted to run after him but he stayed still. It was over; he knew it with every piece of his being.
Alec stayed in the pouring rain for hours, watching the place that Magnus had been standing. He had paused for a second or maybe it had only been in Alec's mind. He couldn't be sure of anything. Finally, when he was soaked to his bones, he took the first step towards the institute. He wished more than anything that he could actually be walking home, but that was gone now. How was it possible to feel homeless when you had a roof, a bed, and people who loved you? He needed to talk, but the only person he wanted, no needed, to talk to had told him goodbye.
Magnus walked away from Alec, with tears in his eyes. He couldn't even hide his warlock's mark; he was too broken. He had told Alec that it was broken. It was, but he hoped that it was something they could fix. How was this a worse breakup than any other he had had before? Because he was the one. Alec was the endgame for Magnus; he was the only being to ever seem to truly fit with Magnus. Alexander was pure, didn't have an agenda, and so willing to try things. But Magnus was too broken for someone with a heart so big. Magnus, couldn't stand the idea of watching Alec grow old, die, and leave him. And it was better to end it now, rather than get more attached. After today, it had hit him like a truck. Alec was perishable and Magnus was not. Love couldn't last between an oak tree and a dandelion. But, oh could that dandelion love better than any other oak tree in the world. Magnus laid on his couch and fell into his memories.
"Magnus?" Alec tapped Magnus's shoulder and Magnus felt a shot of electricity where their skin touched. Magnus was glad that he wasn't wearing a shirt. He had almost pulled on a robe when he answered the door.
"Alexander." Magnus cocked his eyebrow and twitched his lip knowing that it would make Alec look at him closer. It would force Alec to look at the lips that they both knew he wanted to kiss. "To what do I owe this intrusion?"
"Oh, sorry." Alec rubbed his neck and took a step back. "You're obviously busy."
"Wait." Magnus grabbed Alec's arm to stop him from turning and quickly let go as the mousy boy jumped back from his touch. "Come in."
"You're not busy?" Alec saw a group of people in Magnus's house behind him.
"Never when it comes to you." Magnus turned and with a wave of his hand, the people disappeared. "I was just remembering one of the great parties I've had in my life."
"Oh." Alec stepped inside and was back to being closed off.
"It was the one where I first saw you." Magnus winked and held a drink out to Alec after materializing it in his hand. "Come. Sit. We'll talk."
"I don't want to talk." Alec blushed. "Sorry, it's been a long day. I just wanted to, I don't even know why I'm here."
"Why don't we go for a drive?" Magnus set his drink down and turned on his heel. "I'll be right back. You stay here and drink."
Magnus was back in a second with a shiny top on and car keys.
Alec saw a car drive by as he was walking down the street and froze as he remembered his first night-drive with Magnus.
"This is yours?" Alec ran his finger over the smooth exterior of the car. He didn't know much about cars, but he knew this was a very nice one. "It's beautiful."
"I do like it." Magnus opened the door for Alec. "Go ahead."
Once Alec was in the car Magnus leaned over him and buckled the seat belt. Alec was going to argue that he could do it himself but the closeness was too intoxicating. He nearly kissed Magnus or grabbed him. He was losing his mind.
"This song is my favorite." Magnus turned on a song that sounded very old. His voice matched the signer's perfectly. Alec had no idea that Magnus could sing like that. He closed his eyes and felt his hand moving as if on its own until it brushed against Magnus's soft hand. Alec clutched Magnus's hand tightly as if he were in pain.
Magnus laughed and it was the sound of the angels. Alec opened his eyes and looked over at Magnus who was watching him with hungry eyes. Magnus took his hand back briefly and the car stopped. They were up on a hill with a view of the city below them. Magnus shifted his body so he could face Alec and Alec mirrored his actions. Their hands met each other again and Magnus's free hand framed Alec's face. Alec couldn't take the slowness of their actions and took control. He kissed Magnus, sharing all of his pent of emotions.
Alec wiped a single tear off his cheek and continued walking again. He was never going on another night drive again. He wasn't going to kiss those soft, strong, sensuous lips again. It was over and Alec knew that he would never love again. He would need to marry for duty, have kids with someone he could never love, and die alone.
Alec wrapped his arms around Magnus as the warlock started to cry. "It's okay. I'm here." Alec whispered as he kissed Magnus's soft hair.
"I'm sorry." Magnus apologized as his tears soaked into Alec's grey shirt.
"Don't be." Alec hugged him tighter. "Just let it out. I'm not going anywhere."
"It's my birthday." Magnus choked out. "My actual birthday and all I can think about is how unwanted and hated I was." Alec's heart broke with the thought of Magnus feeling that, especially as a child. They had only talked about his childhood briefly but Alec knew it was bad.
"I love you," Alec said for the first time in his life. "I love you and want you."
"I love you too." Magnus looked up, his cat eyes flashing in and out of view as he tried to blink the tears away.
Magnus screamed his anger after remembering their first time saying I love you. He had led the poor boy on, knowing that it wouldn't last. He had thought they'd go out, have sex, kiss a couple of times and then be over, but that was not the case. Magnus should have known better. He had known better. From the moment he met Alec, he knew that they'd never be the same again. The memory of that night came back to him like arrows through his already shattered heart.
"Alexander, we need to talk." Magnus pushed Alec back and licked his lips. They had been kissing when it hit Magnus just how wrong it was. Alec had almost died and now they were acting as if everything was fine.
"Okay." Alec looked worried.
"About your mission tonight." Magnus started then stopped. He was trying to say it nicely so it wouldn't hurt but even the thought of saying it hurt like nothing he had felt before. "You almost died. You were worried about me and got distracted."
"Because you were in danger." Alec looked like a lost child, innocent and so pure.
"I'm immortal. I can die, but it's extremely unlikely. You, on the other hand, could die right now just because." Magnus took a breath and saw the pain and fear in Alec's eyes. "You risked your life for someone who has had more lifetimes than you and all of your friends combined. But that's not the only thing. It forced me to think of our future."
"Our future?" Alec snorted. "Magnus, be honest. You're talking about my future and your future not our future."
"It's broken, Alexander." Magnus nodded. "We can't be together. You'll grow old and I'll be the same."
"I'll die and you won't?" Alec sounded blank of emotions.
"This needs to end. I'm sorry. I love you, but we can't keep doing this." Magnus turned around and walked away.
"Magnus?" Alec's voice cut through the storm outside and in Magnus's soul. He kept walking.
"Magnus!" The voice pulled Magnus out of his heartbreaking memory. Alec was standing over him, inside his apartment, soaking wet.
"No." Alec held his hand up. "I listened to you and it's your turn to listen to me."
"Okay." Magnus stood up prepared for the lashing that he deserved.
"You are worried because I'll die and you won't." Alec smiled and Magnus wanted to forget everything and take him right there. "That is the fear of every serious relationship; living without the other. Who's to say you won't die on me?"
"Alexa-" Magnus was cut off by Alec's lips on his. Alec moaned into Magnus's mouth as his tongue slipped inside.
"How can you give this up? How can you give me up because of fear? The future is unknown. You can't react expecting certain results. You can only choose your actions and then live with what happens. I know you're scared. I am too. And yes, I'm asking you to prepare to possibly live a whole other life without me, but I'm willing to do it. I would rather have a broken heart because I lost you, than live a single second without you while you're still here." Alec framed Magnus's face with his rough hands. "You are my home. Please don't take it away from me. Leave that to the future and give me all that you have right now. I'll do the same. Until the angels decide to take me, I am yours whether or not you'll have me."
Magnus had no words. He simply kissed Alec. It was short, sweet, and full of love.
