This song is about the leader (Dan Reynolds) dropping out of college. Now, society looks down on that quite a bit, saying college dropouts will "never make it" and "are throwing away their education". But in this situation, Dan realized that he was struggling with stress, depression, and overall poor health. College just wasn't a good environment for him. That wasn't something he could change about himself. So he left and began a new life.

Now he's the lead singer for a top-charting band, gets to speak out about issues that are important to him, raises millions of dollars for cancer research, and so much more.

Don't be afraid to do things that feel right, even if people tell you it's wrong. This is your life. You can't change who you are.
