Chapter 19 - Internship Request
Katsuki glanced at the time on his phone before looking back up to the panting green head that just ran up to him.
"You're fucking late nerd. If we don't hurry, we'll miss the train" Katsuki hissed, grabbing his arm and dragging him with him.
"I-I... I'm so sorry!" Izuku panted, still trying to catch his breath as he stumbled behind Kacchan.
They were able to step on the train moments before the doors closed and Izuku instantly fell down in an empty seat.
"Care to explain why you left me waiting like that?" Katsuki asked, sitting down next to him. Izuku was normally never late... Katsuki didn't want to admit it, but this worried him a little bit.
"I'm sorry, I overslept" Izuku sighed.
"How the hell do you sleep in with your chaotic family? They make a ruckus from the moment the sun rises" Katsuki said, not buying that lameass excuse.
"Ah, well, guess I was really tired huh..." Izuku sighed, giving Katsuki a weak smile.
"I, uh, I went to bed late last night... It's my own fault, sorry"
"What the hell are you doing up late? Lost track of time while working on your notes or some shit?" Katsuki asked, raising a brow.
"Something like that" Izuku shrugged, yawning before leaning against Katsuki's shoulder, his eyes slowly falling shut. The ash blonde rolled his eyes at that, letting out a sigh but not doing anything about it. Izuku was glad for Kacchan's compassion. He didn't want to tell him about the real reason he stayed up so late. The fact he could establish some sort of contact with a shadow of his dad's consciousness was strangely fascinating... Yet still so fucking weird.
Izuku wasn't always able to establish a connection and he wasn't able to hold onto it for very long. His record was about half a minute. Izuku had no idea whether that was long or short... He didn't exactly have a benchmark, you know?
"Oi, come on, we're here" Katsuki mumbled, shaking Izuku a little as their train arrived. Izuku hummed, standing up and following his friend outside, walking with him to school like he did every day.
"So have you looked into your internship yet? Narrowed it down a bit?"
"Oh, uh, no, I haven't really thought about it" Izuku sighed. Katsuki frowned at that, thinking that was all the nerd would be able to think about after their conversation about it yesterday.
"Have you looked into Mirko?"
"Yeah, she's pretty cool, I'll probably go with her" Katsuki shrugged, but Izuku could see he was actually really happy to be able to intern under her.
The fact she even requested him was special, seeing as she didn't take on many interns.
"You should make your choice soon nerd, only got until the end of the week"
"Yeah, yeah, I know" Izuku chuckled as Kacchan teased him about it. The two of them walked inside the school building, chatting about random things, before Aizawa stopped Izuku in his tracks.
"Midoriya, this came in for you" he sighed, handing the green head an envelope.
"It's a request for an internship"
"Really? They can still come in? I thought all requests were already processed?" Izuku asked, confused, hesitantly taking it.
"Some strings were pulled to get this one through" Aizawa muttered.
"You don't seem very happy about that... Why? Who is this from?" Katsuki asked, frowning at their homeroom teacher.
"...One of All Might's former mentors" Aizawa sighed, making Izuku's eyes widen.
"You can just throw it away if you like, but I'm obliged to hand it to you"
"Yeah, thanks..." Izuku breathed, looking down at the envelope as Aizawa walked away from them, going on about his business.
"You're not actually considering it, are you?" Katsuki asked, knowing the look Izuku was giving.
"W-what? Oh, no! N-no, no, no! I-I'll throw it away after class" Izuku quickly rambled, fumbling with the envelope as they entered the classroom. They both knew that was a lie, even though Katsuki didn't understand why Izuku was actually thinking about it.
All Might suspected him to be involved with All For One, right? He arranged this in order to keep a close eye on him... Maybe this was an opportunity for Izuku as well? A chance to prove himself, to lead them astray... If he could convince his former mentor that he was just a normal kid wanting to be a hero, maybe he could get All Might off his back as well? It could be the moment he'd been waiting for... He should talk to his father about this. To his actual father this time, not the voice in his mind.
They sat down in their seats, Katsuki turning around to face the green head.
"Don't be reckless and get your stupid ass in trouble, got it?"
Izuku smiled a little at that, knowing Kacchan cared about him and his safety.
"I know I need to be careful"
"I'm serious" the ash blonde stated, frowning.
"Don't do anything you know will end wrong, certainly when you're planning to actually take this damn internship"
"Aw, you do care about me Kacchan~" Izuku giggled, making Katsuki release a few explosions, yelling profanities as Izuku laughed and dodged his attacks. Class started soon enough though and soon enough the internship request was forgotten, pushed all the way to the back of their minds as they focussed on their lessons and training.
...
Toshinori had been nervous to write Gran Torino about Midoriya. He didn't exactly have the evidence he needed to back up his words so there was a chance his mentor wouldn't believe him. Yet this was one of the few ways he knew how to gather it. If there was another pro hero who suspected something was up, they couldn't deny his theory any longer. He wasn't sure whether or not he would accept his request though...
Asking to give Midoriya an internship was a stretch, certainly because he knew how much Gran Torino actually hated teaching. The only reason he got his license was to keep his promise to Shimura Nana... But Gran Torino accepted, understanding that Toshinori wouldn't reach out to him if the man didn't have a reason to be this concerned. The old man couldn't force Midoriya to choose him though... And if he was really involved with All For One, he probably wouldn't accept it.
It's not like Izuku didn't have any other requests. He got far in the sportsfestival and showed off his quirk and skills in various ways. That is to say, the quirk he claims he has. All Might could only hope that the green head would accept it... He looked up when the door to the teacher's lounge was slammed shut, an angry looking Shouta walking in.
Ah yes... Since All Might had his unofficial restraining order, he couldn't come near Midoriya at all. Nezu would have his head after what he pulled at the USJ. So that's why Aizawa had to be the one to deliver it, not that the pro hero had wanted to.
"I hope you're happy now, All Might" he grumbled, sitting down at his desk.
"Don't expect much of it though"
"Did you tell him I arranged it?" All Might asked, fearing the answer.
"Of course I did" Aizawa hissed. Hm... That still didn't mean anything though. Midoriya didn't know he was the one who caused the USJ to malfunction. Even if the teen was a little wary of him, he should still be impressed that the number one hero arranged an internship for him. If he isn't working with All For One, it should be a tempting offer, right?
"And uh... H-how did he react?"
Aizawa glared at him before looking back at his screen. He didn't want to have this conversation with Yagi. The fact that his student was the holder of All For One was still a weird and foreign feeling, but that didn't mean he wasn't supportive. He believed Izuku wanted to become a hero without ulterior motives or ill intentions. Shouta had done his research on him, finding out all kinds of things about his private life and his past.
He'd always had good grades and was eager to help out. His family also owned a shelter for vulnerable kids and teens, helping them with their quirks and other troubles. Being surrounded by so many powerful quirks all the time, gathered together in one place... Aizawa couldn't be certain, but that was an ideal environment for All For One, wasn't it? That's why he had a hunch that the previous holder, the one who used the quirk to cause harm and death, was Midoriya Hisashi.
The man's track record was...odd. Aizawa didn't find a lot on him, all signs of a fake identity were there as well. No birthplace, just a birth certificate. No school records, no previous living addresses, no job records, nothing. It's like he just popped into existence by the time he married Inko, their marriage certificate seemed legitimate. Since then he had an address and a few years later a job. There were also track records of the adoption of their eldest son, of Izuku's birth, of establishing the shelter and fundraisers.
Yet that money wasn't nearly enough to cover their costs. Aizawa knew there was something going on there, something not so legal... He won't do anything about it though, not yet at least. The shelter seemed to be functioning well and had good results in rehabilitating troublesome teens and allowing a swift transition into society. It seemed like Izuku was right... All For One really did want to redeem himself...
Shouta will allow it, for now. But he'll keep monitoring the situation and the moment even a single thing goes wrong, he'll take action.
"I can assure you that Gran Torino won't harm the boy in any way, Eraser. It's simply a test, a way for me to gather the evidence that you want without me being near him" All Might explained.
"Isn't that a win-win situation?"
"If Midoriya were to intern under him and something were to happen to him, I'll hold you accountable" Aizawa grumbled.
"I haven't forgotten what you did at the USJ, All Might. I'm sure you understand I cannot risk the safety of my students, even if it's the number one hero endangering them"
Toshinori hummed at that, knowing that Eraserhead had always been overprotective and caring of his students. It's strange, seeing as he is also the teacher with the most expulsions to his name. All Might knew that what he did at the USJ was impulsive and unacceptable. It'll take some time to regain Eraser's trust... But he wasn't one to give up because of something like that, certainly not when he was this close to getting some answers.
And if Midoriya chooses not to intern under Gran Torino, he'll just have to follow up on him wherever he may go. He was sure that other pro heroes wouldn't have any trouble complying and working with him on this investigation. All Might still had his charm and status, after all, and so he could easily get his hands on confidential information under the cover of a mission or investigation.
Because why would people even question his actions to begin with? He was the number one hero, the symbol of peace! There was no way he wanted to cause any harm, so was it really that bad to just give him access? It were special circumstances, weren't it? Yes, it definitely were! He was sure that whoever took Midoriya in, would see it the same way!
"Of course, I will take full responsibility" All Might nodded.
Aizawa glared at him for a moment before continuing to work. All Might was planning something and he knew it. He just didn't know what exactly he was planning and it set him on edge. It's not like Izuku isn't able to defend himself. Shouta was sure he would be fine given any situation. The quirk All For One wasn't something to mess around with, it was powerful and destructive and Izuku would be able to conquer whatever enemy was thrown his way even though he's still a first year hero course student.
What worried Aizawa were the people surrounding his student. If anyone else found out about his quirk... If they didn't stay quiet, if they were siding with All Might... Well, things could go south really quickly for the Midoriya family, with or without AFO to protect them. Hopefully Izuku would be smart enough to avoid that from happening, but a small voice in his mind warned him that it wouldn't be that simple. Ah, Aizawa really did have a problem child on his hands, didn't he..? The man sighed. This was going to be a long year...
