Science Experiment

possible spoiler warning!!! BNHA Manga!

Hawks was rummaging around in a bag when a voice spoke up from behind him.

"I know you're not really trying to become a villain." Dabi said suddenly.

Hawks tensed, fighting the urge to argue or to turn. This wasn't the first time Dabi had said this- the hero knew he was just trying to get a reaction and Hawks would be damned if he gave it to him.

"But what I can't quite understand is why." Dabi continued. Strange. Hawks mused silently. He usually stops after saying that he doesn't believe me.

"You have as much right as me or any of the others- maybe even more- to be angry at hero society." Dabi went on. "But... then again... perhaps the same reason you have to be angry at them is the same reason you can't. Tell me, do you like being the Commission's Science Experiment?"

Hawks turned to face the villain, keeping his expression nonchalant. "What?"

"Do you like being the Commission's Science Experiment?" Dabi repeated, a smirk playing at his lips.

"I don't know what you're talking about, but I hardly work for the Commission at this point. I'm loyal to the league." Hawks said, leaning back against the desk behind him to give off more of a 'I'm not that worried about this' vibe.

Dabi scoffed. "Yeah sure, and I'm the Queen of England."

Hawks smiled. "Now now Dabi, don't be silly. She's far too badass to be you! One can dream though. Maybe someday."

Dabi rolled his eyes. "You didn't answer my question."

Hawks frowned. "I'm not a science experiment."

Dabi took a step towards him. "Yes you are. What defines a science experiment? Testing, modeling, rewiring, breaking, fixing... You've been beaten down from who you were supposed to be, rewired for a new purpose, then tested. Then of course it continued in this manner until we get the final picture. A puppet the Commission controls the strings of. A robot."

"What are you getting at?" Hawks asked, ignoring the feeling in the pit of his stomach. Ignoring the raw pain flaring up in his heart at Dabi's words.

"That you aren't Hawks. That Hawks doesn't really exist. Hawks is a robot. Is it easier being a robot than being yourself? Is that why you haven't rewired yourself?"

"I'm not a robot. I'm a person." Hawks objected.

"You pretty much only have one purpose. Be a hero. That's all you were programmed for."

"I wasn't programmed." Hawks defended, ignoring the weight of those words. He'd thought the same things before... but it wasn't true! Hawks was his own person! He was real! He controlled himself!

"Then tell me, Hawks... how come no one calls you Keigo? Was that your personal choice or were you told you couldn't be that person anymore?" Dabi asked slowly, a sad smile spreading on his face.

Hawks froze. "How did you..." He trailed off, unsure what to say or how to say it.

"It's me, Kei." Dabi said, taking another step closer. His striking blue eyes met Hawks' golden ones and a flicker of recognition showed in Hawks' face.

"Wh-what?" Hawks whispered.

"Don't you remember me?" Dabi took the final step forward so he and Hawks were almost nose to nose, their breath on each other's faces. Hawks' breath smelled like mint and Dabi's like smoke.

Hawks shivered, a tear rolling down his cheek. Dabi quickly wiped it away.

"You died." Hawks whispered, staring into the sapphire eyes of his old love. "They told me you died. They swore that you died."

"They were wrong." Dabi said, grabbing Hawks' hand and setting on his chest, directly on top of his heart. A soft rhythmic beating was felt beneath Hawks' fingertips. "Does that feel dead to you?"

"No..." Hawks breathed. Another tear slipped down his cheek, the salty water sliding to the corner of his mouth. "Do you really think of me as a science experiment?" The hero's already unsteady voice broke.

Dabi pressed his lips against Hawks', the taste of the tear mingling with Hawks' chapstick flavor- cherry.

The villain pulled back quickly, raising Hawks' face so they were looking directly into each other's eyes. "Hawks is. Keigo isn't. Who are you?"

Hawks slid his arms around Dabi's neck. "I'm not a science experiment." He said, pulling their lips together into a long, sweet kiss, both of them savoring the moment and fearing that at any second they would get caught and the other would get hurt but the idea of stopping, even for a moment, being too painful so they kept kissing, tongue's exploring each other's mouths, hands exploring each other's body as if to memorize every inch of the other.

They broke apart, both slightly breathless.

"I'm not a science experiment." Hawks repeated, and Dabi pulled him into another kiss.
