"TWO DREAMS, ONE CHOICE"
▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄
Since she was a little girl, Blaze always wanted to be either one of two things.
The first, a ballerina. She found their poise, grace, and elegance as they illustrated a story to a ballad completely captivating. She remembers the first time her mother took her and her sister to the Ballet, saving for the tickets for months. Seated toward the back of the amphitheater, six year old Blaze stood on her tippy-toes for a peek at the graceful and beautiful dancers, mimicking their movements like a delayed mirror in the crowd. She loved everything about them. Their pretty hair wrapped in ribbon. Sleek leotards and puffy tutus. And of course, those prized pale pink slippers.
Once, while seated at their usual spot in the amphitheater, the ballerinas trickled into the crowd as part of their routine. A younger Blaze was star-struck, fighting the urge to graze a finger along the tulle of their tutus as they passed her row. Just as one of the ballerinas twirled gracefully by her, there was a flash of pink, cascading gently to the floor. She was the only one who noticed it, or at least thought to act on it. Blaze scooped up the young woman's ribbon that slipped from her hair and stumbled to return it to her.
She'll never forget the sweetness she saw in the ballerina's smile at the gesture. She closed Blaze's open hand that offered her her lost ribbon, and shook her head lightly. Within a breath, she fell back into her dance, leaving the little girl speechless. Blaze still has the very ribbon to this day.
By the time she was eight, a new dream came into play. One that was displayed and propagated all throughout District One to their impressionable youth. There was a chance to be more than a ruby miner, jeweler, or working in the factories to produce luxurious items for The Capitol. There was a chance for honor, glory, and adoring admiration. There was a chance to be one of the greatest things a District Citizen could be. A Victor.
All Blaze would need to do is win The Hunger Games.
For the next nine years, she would train in District One's Academy alongside other children and teens, including her older sister. As each Games went by, she would wait until she heard her name called by the Council to select her as a tribute to represent her District. From ages twelve to fourteen, she didn't expect to be selected. At fifteen, she was hopeful and excited. When turning sixteen, she was beginning to grow impatient, narratives that she might never be good enough creeping into her mind.
And now, at seventeen years old, Blaze is determined, eyes set unwaveringly upon the prize.
