Torren
I was woken up by a sharp pain in my head. Slowly opening my eyes, I tried to reach up to feel for wounds, but found that my hands were cuffed with a strong metal band to the wall I was leaning against. What had happened? I searched my memories until it hit me, or my head banged against the hard wall as I was jostled around by some unknown force.
I was in the back of an unlit van, not only that, a van that belonged to the horrible facility that ran experiments on people like me. Struggling in my restraints, I tried to slip my hands through the cuffs, but they were fastened too tightly that I could hardly even turn my wrists. I searched the back of the van, taking in my surroundings.
It was hard to see through the darkness, but I knew I was strapped to a wall, and from what it looked like, they were fully equipped to handle 'people like me' so it was useless trying to escape. Suddenly, from the darkness came an exasperated voice, "I already tried everything while you snored in that corner over there, so there is no point in struggling."
I rolled my eyes at this, "No dip Sherlock, I've had that figured out for about 45 seconds now," then I narrowed my eyes in the general direction that the voice came from, "and who are you anyways?" A girly laugh erupted from the darkness. "You don't remember? Dragon wings, horns, and tail??"
"Ohhhhh," I said sarcastically, "you're that girl that totally failed escaping the facility." She snorted at this, saying with just as much sarcasm in her voice, "Says the one now being captured by that same facility." "Hey," I protested boastfully, "I already escaped from that place once, so I'm higher up on the not failed list than you are."
There was a surprised silence, then an almost whispered question, "How did you escape?" I thought for a moment, then replied quietly, "I have amazing friends." She sucked in a long breath, then exhaled slowly, stating, in an even softer voice, "My friends are gone."
I could hear her voice trembling through the darkness, and felt immediate pity for this girl. At first she had seemed confident, bold, and unafraid. But now I saw that wasn't true. "What's your name?" The question left my mouth before I could stop it. After a slight pause, she cleared her throat, ridding of the shaking in her words, and replied: "Jade......what's yours?"
"Torren." Leaning forward, I squinted as hard as I could to try and see Jade through the shadows. "Raise your hand," I ordered, and she silently obeyed, the flicker of movement catching my eye. I turned towards her, my eyes finally adjusting, and examined her face in the darkness. I grinned, "You seem awfully young to be in prison Miss Jade." Her hand dropped, and I could detect a frown from her.
"I'm 19 you butt," she said, sticking her tongue out at me. "With the maturity level of a 12 year old," I commented, holding back laughter at her expression. "I swear if I wasn't chained up right now, I would strangle you," she shot back, obviously annoyed with me. Raising my voice, I taunted her, "Aaaah, I'm so scared!"
She groaned, "Am I seriously going to be stuck with you for the rest of my life at that stupid facility!?"
I grinned at this and said, "That would be great! I'll always have someone to tease when I'm being dissected!"
"I hope they kill me first so I don't have to listen to you." She slumped back against her side of the van.
I put a hand over my chest feigning hurt, "You don't mean that!"
"You're right, I don't." She smirked. "I hope they kill you first so I can finally have some peace and quiet for the rest of my pathetic life."
I looked up at the ceiling, finally saying, "If you want me to shut up you could've just asked."
She sounded agitated as she quickly said "Please don't, it would be so much worse to be sitting here in the dark with complete silence."
"Aha, the lady enjoys my company. If we ever get out of here, would the lady like to spend more time with me?" I teased.
I heard banging and looked over to see her banging her head on the wall. "Somebody let me out of here!" I just laughed and shook my head at her.
"Would you rather be in this van with me or in the creepy prison cell without me?" I questioned, fighting the urge to laugh.
She looked me dead in the eye, and started to say "I would rather be in the pris-" but was cut off by the van doors being thrown open, blinding us with sunlight. The men that had attacked us climbed into the van, uncuffing one of my hands, then recuffing it with a different pair of restraints. When he unlocked the band around my other hand, I threw a punch at one of their faces, and the man stumbled backwards.
I altered the gravity around him so that he banged into the ceiling of the van, knocking him unconscious. Then I did the same to the other three men in the car before they could shout for help. Quickly jumping to my feet, I ignored the heavy weight around my wrist that pulled me off balance, and without hesitation I reached towards Jade, but just as I had grabbed her cuff, she screamed "Look out!"
My reflexes kicked in, and I used myself as a human shield, jumping in front of her, blocking her from any harm as I had done multiple times before to my friends. I was hit with almost a dozen sharp objects by men outside the van, and I looked down to see they were tranquilizer darts. My vision blurred on the edges, and I collapsed forward, my face colliding with the cold metal floor.
I could hear Jade screaming at the men to let us go, but her screams were cut short and there was a small thud somewhere behind me, and I assumed Jade had been shot with the darts as well. I groaned, hardly able to move as I fought the darts effects of instant unconsciousness. With my lessening energy, and my vision edging on black, I used the gravity to pull myself above the men 30 feet in the air, where they couldn't reach me.
I realized my mistake too late as my powers succumbed to the sleep, and I hurtled towards the earth and my numb limbs flailing uselessly, bracing myself for the impact. I blacked out before I even hit the ground.
