THE GIRL STOOD unaffected as the cold breeze caressed her bare legs and shoulders.
Her body temperature had always been abnormally high since birth, it was part of being who she was.
No. Not who, but what.
Her grey dress, ending just above her knees, danced gracefully with the wind. Crisp leaves tumbled past her, travelling to places she could only dream to go.
She looked like a flickering shadow, a ghost monitoring the endless forest where monsters were said to be.
Monsters.
She smiled ruefully. That was what she was, what her family had always been.
Her ears twitched slightly as a familiar smell engulfed her senses. Somehow, she stayed calm and collected like always, her senses trained on every little thing surrounding her petite frame.
Despite being only fifteen-years-old, her mind was older by far too much; she had gone through a lot.
The tension around the two friends grew by each passing second. No one talked. No one moved. The only sound that could be heard was the scattering leaves in the growing wind.
"What do you want." Her voice was just loud enough for him to hear, yet light enough to be carried away by the wind. It was sharp, commanding like the leader she would be forced to become.
He jumped in front of her, landing in the famous Spiderman crouch. The full moon's light shone on his face, revealing his young and innocent appearance.
Another child who was forced to grow up way too fast.
The boy rose slowly with a smile, facing his best-friend since childhood.
She couldn't help but let out a light laugh when she caught sight of his serious facial expressions. He always had a thing for dramatic entrances.
They had gone through so much. Surviving the arduous journey of life together like it should be.
But now she wants to leave everything, all the memories they had made, all the dreams they had created. All for a boy.
He looked at her, his face serious. "Please tell me you're not actually considering this."
She simply stared blankly at the ground, her eyes glued to her bare feet.
"I love him."
"You just met him!"
Her startled eyes flickered to his face, just as his eyes flashed gold. She could hear his pounding heart, smell the anger in his voice.
It was his turn to stare at the ground, watching the harsh wind flip over pebbles and dead leaves. It reminded him of the time they skipped stones by the river; of the times they laid on dry leaves, looking up at the glimmering stars.
He promised himself he wouldn't cry in front of her today, nevertheless, a single tear managed to escape. He quickly wiped it away before she saw.
She switched her piercing gaze from her dirt-covered feet to him. "What about you and Paige?" She regretted her words as soon as it left her mouth.
He remained silent. Paige was an impossible problem to solve. She was human as well.
The girl sighed before speaking up, her voice softer, "You're too late anyways."
"I know."
"We're leaving tonight."
The boy slips his hand into hers, expecting her to pull away. She didn't.
He leaned in, his minty breath fanning her cheeks.
"I know," he whispers softly, bringing up his right hand to caress her face.
She stared at him, memorizing those soft emerald eyes and that flawless face.
His eyes flashed gold again.
"I'll miss you."
He leaned in a bit more, eyes flickering to her soft pink lips. "Will you ever visit?"
She closes her eyes, "I-I don't think I can."
His heart-beat doesn't falter at her predictable response, "Then remember me."
His lips were suddenly on hers, lingering for a brief moment.
Then he was gone.
What's done is done, there was no going back. She knows she can't. And so, with a heavy heart, she forced her eyelids open. The girl looked into the shadows where he hid.
"Always."
Then nothing could be seen in the clearing anymore. The scent of the two past lovers remained faintly, gradually being washed away by the angry winds.
