Chapter 13
{Reader's POV}
"Officer Stan are you sure that could help the case? It's only a present from Jamie's parents", my father's inquisitive voice echoed through the room as the crazed officer held the music box in his hand.
His fingers tightened around the adorable heirloom and with the way he held it so possessively, angered me. "Oh Mr. (L/N), this is indeed all we need to catch the murderer. You see, this actually belongs to him. It's only a matter of time before he comes to reclaim it."
Silence clung to the air as my parents' eyes widened. My father features contorted to anger as he held my mother close to his chest. They turned their attention to me with a questioning frown. I winced at their expressions and shrunk back in fear as I watched the horrid scene unfold in front me, wishing this was only a dream.
Officer Stan noticed the tension in the air and began to chuckle as he placed the music box in a bag marked 'evidence'.
"Well, now that I have what I came for, it's time for us to apprehend our only witness...", the officer ankles warmly as he nodded his head to the other men. "Miss. (L/N), you're coming with me." They obediently marched towards me and, as I stumbled back in horror, an officer roughly grabbed onto my arms and snapped a pair of handcuffs on me.
My parents, appalled by their actions ran to my side. They surrounded me defensively and my father glared at Officer Stan. "What the hell is going on?! My daughter has done NOTHING wrong! Take these damn handcuffs off her and get out of our house!!" The officer snickered at my father and shook his head, amused by the outcome.
"You dare question the city's law enforcement? My my sir, this is a serious offense if you decide to go against a Chief's direct order", Officer Stan said with a twisted smile. My father sizzled at the man's response and glared daggers at him. Reluctantly, both my parents shamefully left my side and averted their gazed. "Don't worry Honey, we'll pay the bail as soon as we can..", my mother said glumly as she clutched my father's arm.
My eyes widened like saucers as tears mindlessly slipped down my cheeks. I gawked at the smile Officer Stan held and noticing the monstrous expression on his face, I dropped to my knees and hanged my head in defeat. I gritted my teeth as Jack's face flashed inside my head... his smile, I wouldn't be able to see it anymore..
"Stan, its late. We should head off now for the jail before it gets too dark", an officer spoke from beside me and nodded his head toward the door. Officer Stan nodded his head and took one last look at the music box before making his way to us.
At the moment it seemed like everything could crumble to pieces right now. I felt like the only ounces of hope I had left were already sipping from my grasp... That is, until a heard a familiar melody playing...
Officer Stan and everybody else looked around the room as that childish song played over and over like a broken record player. My parents eyes scanned over the couches and as soon as the song hit it's climax, my parents dropped to the floor and lost consciousness. The officers stared in awe as their sleeping figures unnerved us all.
Then, in the corner of my eye, I watched as Officer Stan dropped the music box. My jaw hung open as I raised my head and stared up at the Officer. His brown eyes widened as he pinned his stare at the wall behind us. The officer's shoulders tensed up and he suddenly frowned at all us as if he were confused.
I raised an eyebrow and along with the other officers, we looked behind us to see whatever it was that caught his attention. The only one who could actually see what caused the Officer's sudden reaction, was me.
It was him. It was Laughing Jack.
"AAHHH!!", Officer Stan finally broke and stumbled back in fearful amazement. He tripped on his steps and fell to the floor as his gaze peered at the incredulous sight before him. He trembled and gripped the music box to his chest in utter horror. My eyes lit up and a smile adorned my face as I realized what had happened.
"Hehe..Ha..aha..HAHAHAHA!! A pleasure to FINALLY meet you Officer!! I've been dying to see you!!! AHAHA!!!"
Jack's fear-inducing voice rung out through the room and, with a wave of his hand, all the lights in my house went off without a second to spare. I could sense the other officers whipping around their heads to catch whatever was responsible for the blackout.
I flinched as I felt a cold hand cup my cheek gently. With a quick kiss on my cheek, Jack let go of me and in an instant I felt the cuffs come off too. I reached out for a hug but I couldn't feel his body close to me anymore.
Confused and vulnerable, I stayed put and pressed my hands against the carpeted floor.
My shoulders tensed up at the sounds of men shouting in agony. Their ear-splitting screams echoed in my ears and the balling fits of laughter from Jack sent my spine tingling.
Everything was pitch-black and the only thing I could feel was a warm liquid splattering all over my body... I dreaded to think what it was and where it was coming from...
"LET ME GOOO!!! MONST—",
"DEMON!!—",
"HEEEEEEEELLPP!!!!!—",
The other officers couldn't finish their sentences as Jack ripped them apart into pieces.
Then, in a moment of deadly silence, the lights came back on. The scene that my eyes came to lay on was absolutely horrific. I helplessly stared out at the maimed bodies of the officers from before and watched as pools of blood stained my carpet floor. Intestines sprawled out of them and littered the floor with a disgusting odor.
"Who... Who a..are you..?!", Officer Stan shouted angrily as Jack grinned at his unscathed body. To him, he was saving the best for last. "Heehee~! Who me? Oh! I'm just the owner of that little ol' music box in your hand! What was it you said? It's only a matter of time before he comes to reclaim it?", Jack chuckled as he stepped closer toward the man.
Officer Stan trembled and fidgeted against the wall as he tried to suppress his screams of terror. Jack tilted his head in amusement and unclenched his claws to flex them disturbingly.
"There's only ONE human who can touch my toy box without having to die, and you are not her~! So, since I'm bored of this, let's end things here, shall we?", Jack said with a twisted, mischievous grin as he cornered the man to the wall.
Officer Stan suddenly started patting his pants and clumsily took something out of his pockets after. Jack chuckled as he noticed a cell phone clutched in his sweaty palm. "One. More. Move. And I'll call in reinforcements!!!", Officer Stan said pathetically as he pinned his attention to the monochrome clown, more specifically to his claws and where they were moving.
Jack shrugged his shoulders and merrily popped a piece of candy into his mouth. "You mean to tell me, I get more people to kill today?! Well Cupcake what you waiting for?! Ahaha!!!" The officer frowned at the clown's words and squeezed the phone tighter in his hand. "Oh they'll come!!! They'll come and arrest EVERYBODY in this room!!!", he threatened.
Jack raised an eyebrow and returned the man's words with a frown. He looked down to the floor and his gaze suddenly turned to me. I stared up at him and gave him a wary expression.
Jack then turned his attention back to the Officer and gave him a deadly glare. The officer shrunk back in fear as Jack suddenly started walking closer to him. Then, as they came face-to-face, Jack exploded in another round of cruel laughter.
"'Round and 'round the cobbler's bench The monkey chased the weasel, the monkey thought ''twas all in fun...", Jack roughly grabbed the Officer's shoulders and caused a blood-curdling scream to escape his mouth. The monochrome clown laughed insanely and giggled as a cloud of smoke engulfed the man and slithered around him like a snake. "POP! GOES THE WESEAL!!!! Ahahahaha!!!", Jack toppled over in his eccentric laughter as the Officer slowly disappeared out of sight.
Once he was gone, I watched in awe as Jack wiped a tear from his pale face. "What did you do to him..?", I asked through a raspy voice and gripped the carpet under me. Jack stopped laughing and grinned brightly at me from where he stood.
"He's in a carnival, doll! Where he'll have LOTS to do with my old playmates~!", he paused and walked toward me as I gazed up at him in bewilderment. He lifted me up off the floor and wrapped his arms around me to carry my frail body bridal-style.
"It's alright, I'll let him out once he's learned his lesson...Hehe." I let out a sigh and nuzzled my head into his chest to blot out the bloody corpses of officers spread out in my living room.
