Chapter Three.
I quickly threw my hair up in a messy bun and slipped on my slippers and walked out of my room and down the stairs to leave my house to go see what Kaden is doing. Funny, he wasn't home yesterday and neither was his parents and Angela. I guess they stayed at a family house overnight. I was out most of the day yesterday over at Melanie house until my date at seven with Logan then he took me home.
Last night was...okay. I mean, it was totally fun to hang out with Logan, but it wasn't as much as fun as I ever had with Kaden. My mind was on Kaden a lot yesterday, though. I felt bad since I would sometime block out from Logan and think of Kaden. But I was surprised to see after he dropped me off, he kissed my cheek. I felt like I could explode, but I was disappointed when he didn't ask me to be his girlfriend yet.
But now it's morning time and I'm going to see Kaden and ask how his family reunion was. I walked out my house with closing the door behind me and jogged over to Kaden house. I knocked on the door a few times and whistled to myself, waiting for someone to answer.
After a few moments of nothing, I knocked again, but no one came. My eyebrows forward together in confusion and I crawled behind a bush that was in front of window and peeked in threw the slight of the curtains. I put my hands against the window to block out the sun. Hmm, the living room is empty.
Where are they?
I turned around and looked down the street to see if Claire or Joe car was around, but I didn't see it.
I took out my cell phone out of my back pocket and texted Kaden, asking if he was home.
Monday
I was getting a little worried.
I dropped my school bag on the couch when I got home from school-not to mention I had to ride the freaking loud bus-and made my way up to my room.
Where the hell is Kaden? Where is his little sister and parents?
He didn't come to school today and no one has heard from him at all ever since Friday. Did something happen to him? Did he and his family get in a car wreck and no one has found the car since it could possibly be in a ditch somewhere?
Oh, look at me! I'm just being paranoid. I threw my body on my bed and took out my cell phone. I got one text from Logan and two from Melanie, one being a forward. I sighed to myself and checked them. I texted Kaden at least five times and called him twice, but I haven't gotten anything in return.
But is it wrong for me to worry?
No.
So, where in the hell is my friend?
Wednesday
"Jesse, you have to stop stressing over this." Melanie said when she looked up from her magazine and saw me pacing in my room as I bit down on my nails. I couldn't stop from moving though, I was freaking out! Jeez, I can actually feel my heart beat in my ears! It's been like this for the past two days! I'm really worried about Kaden and his family.
"I can't!" I said, throwing my hands in the air. "Kaden hasn't been in school for the past three days and I haven't seen in five! He won't text me back and when I try to call him, his phone would go straight to voicemail. Melanie, I'm really worried," I said, sitting down next to her.
She put her magazine down and went to her best friend mood, "I know, Jesse. I'm also worried...everyone is. But all the teachers said his family went on a last minute vacation."
"Kaden wouldn't go on a last minute vacation without telling me.", I said in a 'duh' way. "Or anything one else. It would be a thing for him to brag about."
She picked her magazine back up and shrugged, "Maybe if he didn't want people in his business."
"Explain why he's not returning my messages or calling me back," I said. "His phone is off too! I'm one of his closet friends, he would answer to me."
"Jesse, I don't know everything!" she said loudly. "Stop yelling at me."
Realizing, I sighed, "I'm sorry, Melanie. I'm just...it's unlike him. You don't...you don't think he could be hurt or something?"
She didn't responded so quickly and my anxiously picked up in my body. She sighed, "Jesse, you're freaking out about this way too much. Take a deep breath and relax. And no, I don't. Even, if he and his family are hurt or something, I think someone would have found them by now and it would have been in the news. I'm sure him and his family are just enjoying themselves on this so called vacation and don't have time to be checking up on calls and stuff."
"I hope your right, Mel," I said, tapping both the nail of my thumbs on the screen of my phone. The urge to call him was making me crazy. I got up, "I'm just going to try one more time-"
"Oh no you don't!" Melanie said as she threw the magazine aside and jumped up from the bed and took my phone. "You just need to relax and not think of Kaden for a second. Even, you should be with Logan right now at his house making out on his love seat, not obsessing over where Kaden could be." When I reached for my phone, she pulled her arm backwards and lifted her hand up in the air.
"Give me my phone, Melanie!"
"No.", she said and held the phone higher and moved her arm backwards so I would have a hard time trying to get it from her. "Now isn't the time-"
She was cut off when we heard a car door closed shut in a familiar direction. Before I could think twice, I jumped on my bed and looked out my window to see Claire handing Angela her pink duffle bag and went back to unpacking from her trunk.
Again, I didn't think when I jumped off the bed and threw my black and white slipper boots on and ran out of my room and down the stairs. I quickly opened the door and let it slam behind me when I closed it and ran over to Claire.
"Where have you guys been?" I asked, brushing my brown hair behind my ear. Claire jumped and looked up from the trunk. She gave me a small smile.
"Oh, hello Jesse. I didn't hear or see you coming."
My cheek heated up, "Sorry for scaring you. Anyways, where have you guys been?" I repeated.
She chuckled at me, "Oh you know...vacation," she hesitantly said.
"Vacation?" I questioned and she nodded. "For five days? Why didn't you guys tell me instead of leaving me here wondering where the heck you guys are?"
She shrugged, "Sorry for scaring you, Jesse."
I ran my fingers threw my hair, "Um...I'm going to go see Kaden." Before she could speak, I turned around and walked over to the door, but when I got to the entrance, Joe blocked my way.
He gave me a smile, "Hey Jesse."
"Hi Joe- ", I cut myself off when I tried to slid passed him, but he leaned against the door frame, fully blocking me. I raised an eyebrow to him.
"Kaden can't see you right now. Sorry," he said, looking down at me apologetic.
"Why not?" I asked, a little frustrated now.
"He's um...not feeling well," he said.
"Da-dad!" I heard Kaden scream and it made me try to go through by going under Joe under, but he lower his arm and blocked me again. "I-it's happening again!" Kaden screamed in pain.
Joe sighed in frustration, "I'm sorry, Jess. You can't see him so just go home right now," he said, closing the door on me.
Friday
I watched out my window Angela playing with Claire in the front yard. I thought about going over and asking if I could see Kaden, but I already knew the answer to it. It's been the same answer each time, 'Sorry, he's not feeling well.' All day Wednesday, Thursday, and today it's been nothing but that! God, I don't care if he's sick! I just want to see him!
I'll admit it, I do miss him. I miss hanging out with him and playing around with each other. It was our thing.
Now, I feel so lost. It was like Kaden was my only friend in the world and I feel like I lost him in a car wreck.
I'm so depressed.
I can't even eat or sleep well! I probably only ate two times a day this whole week and I would get at least a good four or five hours of sleep. Knowing he was right next to me in his house doesn't even comfort me! I really just need to see him.
A plan thought up in my head. I could always sneak over...
I got up from my bed and threw my hoodie on. I slipped on my old converse and threw my hair up in a ponytail. I left my room and went down the stairs. My mother was in the kitchen when I walked in and I gave her a smile.
"Hey, I'm going to for a walk."
"Okay, don't be out too late," she told me and I gave her 'oh come on!' look. She pursed her lips at me, "You heard me, Jesse Mary. They're saying on the news hunters heard some wolves running in the forest." I raised an eyebrow.
"Here? In in Hayden?" I asked and she nodded. "I didn't know wolves were around here."
She shrugged, "There never was until now. Hunters don't understand why and no one can take any guesses."
"Well, I'm not going far." I told her so she wouldn't worry. "I'm just going around a few blocks."
She smiled, "Okay, sweet."
I walked over to the back yard door and went out. I looked over in Brook's backyard and no one was outside. I looked up at Kaden bedroom slid glass door. His room was in the back and he had a balcony. I couldn't tell you how many times I been in his room just playing with toys and video games and just junking out on chips, little cakes, and tons soda that'll will make our teeth rot.
I looked in my house to see if my mom was watching and she wasn't. She was looking down at her work stuff. She a house designer for people who want to remodel their homes before they move in. I went over to the small metal fence and quickly stepped one leg over and swung my other leg over. I sneaked over to the backyard door since I couldn't really sneak up to the balcony. Only Kaden can do that and last time I tried, I only sprained my ankle.
The door was open and I sighed in relief. I slowly opened the screen door since it would squeak and opened it far enough till my body could slide in.
I looked around the kitchen and everything seems normal. It was nice and clean in here with fresh flowers Claire would always buy to make it look so pretty in here and there were no dishes in the strainer.
Yup, the same as ever.
I heard no one in the living room and the TV was off, so I took it as I good sign. I walked in the dinner room and into the living room. The door the front was open and I could see Claire and Angela, but they didn't see me.
"AHHHHHH!" I heard Kaden scream and I jumped and gasped at the same time. "I-It hurts! Dad, make it stop! AHH!"
Unlike Wednesday when I heard it from his bedroom, I heard it from the basement. I didn't think when I ran over to the basement door. Something happening to Kaden and from the way he scream, it wasn't good! I tried turning the knob, but it wouldn't turn all the way. I quickly knocked on the door.
"Kaden! Kaden, are you alright?" I yelled down to them.
"Jesse?" I heard Joe voice and he sounded so confused.
"Open the door!" I yelled. "I want to see Kaden!"
"I'm sorry, but you have to go-"
"Ahh!" I heard Kaden scream again and my fear build up in me.
"What are you doing to him?!" I yelled. "Whatever it is, stop it!"
"I'm not doing anything!" Joe yelled. "Just-just go home!" I heard the front door open and I saw Claire run up to me.
"Jesse, what are you doing here?" she asked, her voice filled with concern.
"I want to see Kaden!" I told her. "What is going on with him and Joe?" I asked. "What's wrong with Kaden?" I demanded.
She shook her head slowly, "Nothing, sweetheart. Please, believe me. He's going to be fine. But you have to go home now." We heard a growl come from down stairs and we both jerk as we stared at the door.
"Kaden, she has to go home!" Joe yelled. "I don't care if you want her here, she has to! Jesse, I'm sorry for speaking to you like this, but go the hell home!"
I couldn't feel my heart beat pounding in my ears and I stared back and forth between the door and Claire. I didn't know what to do. I wanted to stay and figure out what's going on, but leave from the way the growling sound. It sounded just like a...wolf.
Claire didn't wait for me to leave though. She grabbed my wrist and I let her drag me over to the door and out of the house. She closed the door behind her and looked at me seriously, "I'm sorry, Jesse. We can't explain what's going on right now to you. Maybe one day, but not now. You wouldn't understand. You have to go home now."
"But-but-"
She shook her head, "No, go," she said, pointing at my house.
Sunday
I twirled my fork around my plate of spaghetti and just stared at it, not really feeling hungry. All I could think about is Kaden. What is happening to him? What could possibly be going on that I can't see him for whole entire weekend, week days, and another weekend? Damnit! I just want see him!
Melanie is right, though. I'm obsessing over this. Why do I want to see Kaden so badly? Before when he was gone for lots of day I never felt this clingy to be around him so badly and talk to him. I wish he was here though.
Oh my, I thought as something crossed my mind.
I'm starting to fall for Kaden! And I mean actually badly desperately wanting to be with him. Why did it suddenly change to just have a little crush on him to fully wanting him so bad?
"Jesse, aren't you going to eat?" my dad asked, bring me back to earth. I looked up at him.
"Oh, um...I'm not really hungry, daddy." He raised an eyebrow.
"Your mother told me you haven't been eating a lot this week. Why not?"
I shrugged, "I'm not really hungry, but I'm okay," I told him when concern appeared on his face. "I'm promise, daddy."
He shook his head, "Jesse, you're beautiful. You shouldn't starve yourself."
"I'm not starving myself," I said and just to make him happy, I lifted my fork up and took a good mouth full, "See," I said, chewing. I wonder where he would get I was starving myself cause I'm not doing this on purpose. I'm just not really hungry.
He didn't look convince, but he kept his mouth closed and sighed as he went back to eating.
"You know, Jesse," my mother started and now I wanted to groan. "You can talk to me about anything. I was a teenager before, too."
"Mom, I'm serious," I said, "I'm totally fine. I'm just...I just miss Kaden," I mumbled under my breath, feeling my cheeks burn up. I could defiantly feel they're eyes on me, letting me know they heard me.
