Four
"You're not coming?" Quin paused in the door way that supposedly led to Dick's floor.
"I have to make sure we aren't being followed, we still don't know why you're here remember?"
"Yeah but—" she frowned, whether she knew Terry or not it would have been nice to have the company... "fine I don't care, I'll be as quick as I can." She just wanted to get all of this over with and go home. She headed down the hall, scanning the numbers for the one she had been given and knocked on the faded blue door of what was supposedly Dick Grayson's apartment.
A red light lit up where the peephole would have been in her time and it stayed on for a long moment before an irritated voice spoke out through an unseen speaker, "what the hell is this?"
Quin nervously shifted, her eyes glanced back to the hallway, she suddenly wished Terry was next to her. Finally she took a deep breath, "I know this seems strange but, It's me Grayson, Quin."
The red light flicked off and only silence followed.
She felt a white hot heat of magic burn in her chest as she banged on the door, "open-the-fucking-door-Richard!" With a final slap from her palm the metal door burst into white flower petals, the entryway resembled a cheesy romcom. Quin stared at her hand, she hadn't lost control of her magic since she was a kid... of course, it hadn't felt so close to the surface before either. She'd hoped the bubbles of power in her veins would subside but each passing second seemed to just become worse.
And now that she'd accidentally given in, the power seemed impatient to be used.
There was a presence in the doorway that took her a moment to process completely. Her eyes lifted to find Dick Grayson, his dark hair had grayed and he had wrinkles around his eyes and mouth. 56 years had passed but he still had that same acrobat build and boyish charm. Healthcare in the future must be amazing...
"It's really you?" He asked, his voice, like Bruce's, had grown a slight rasp, his familiar tone was still there though.
"I mean... I think so, I did die twice when Bruce told me it had been over 50 years but... I'm here..."
He laughed and then he was hugging her, he was still stronger than her, even at his old age, so she just squirmed uncomfortably. She had never been much of a hugger. He let her go but his hand cupped her face, "you haven't changed one bit..." he stared for a moment then gave her a soft smile as he looked at the petals at their feet, "you owe me a new door—"
"Nox? Is everything Shway back here? I heard yelling." Terry called from down the hall as he ran up.
"What does that even mean?" Quin gave him an annoyed look.
"Nox?" Dick scowled, "who is this guy?"
Terry made his way to them with a smirk and held his hand out toward Dick, "Terry McGinnis."
Dick glanced down at his out stretched hand, "you can stay outside, and keep Bruce's bugs where they belong." Then he plucked something from Quin's back, and dropped it to the ground before crushing it.
"Of course, I should've known..." she sighed, "stay here Terrence, make yourself useful and guard the d— lack of door."
He eyed the empty door frame and flower petals, but said nothing and leaned against the wall with a huff, "fine."
Dick led her into his small livingroom, "do you want a drink?" He asked as he quickly picked up trash around the coffee table and kitchen counter.
"No I'm alright," Quin plopped into a plush recliner in a corner that faced his kitchen, "honestly I only came here to let you know I was alive..."
He came back into the room with a bottle of water anyway and sat across from her on his faded and thread bare couch. "What exactly happened that night? You jumped up out of nowhere and disappeared before I could catch up... I didn't even know you could run that fast." She laughed at the last part but Dick sighed, "and when we couldn't find you after the explosion I—"
"Wait— explosion?"
Dick gave her a strange look, like part of him felt like he shouldn't tell her. He sighed, "of course Bruce didn't tell you... after you disappeared, there was an explosion in the garden, no one was hurt luckily but, you were missing and none of the cameras caught you leaving... now, you show up 50 years later and turn my front door into flowers. What's going on Quin?"
That crater at Wayne manor had it been her fault? How? That had never happened before... right? She pursued her lips and leaned forward, rolling the water bottle he'd handed her between her palms, "my magic has been acting strangely, I'm not sure why... I'm sorry for just disappearing like that, I— I don't even know how to begin to explain all this..."
"Start with why you ran off"
"The Lords of Order were calling, I was needed."
"You work for the them? I thought you hated them?"
She grit her teeth, "I do but, the only reason they let me remain on earth was to do favors for them, if I didn't do what they asked then I would be considered a threat..."
"Did Zatanna know? She wouldn't have let them hurt you."
"Z had her own issues, with Nabu controlling Uncle
Gio, her Justice League duties, and her shows... I didn't see the point of burdening her further. After my father died, Nabu brought me this," she pulled the broken pocket watch from her pocket and showed it to him, "he said my father had left it for me but now I think it was just a trick to get me to do what they wanted."
Dick frowned, "what exactly did you do for them?"
"I fixed breaches in the timeline, they'd send me to the past to find out what was out of balance and then they'd right the wrong..."
"They're sculpting their own timeline? But why?"
Quin bit her lip, she'd never thought about it that way, "I'm not sure and now I can't get in contact with any Lords of Order to find out what I'm supposed to be doing."
"So you fix something and you go back? Does that mean since you never came back that you're going to be unsuccessful?"
"Well..." she took a nervous drink of water, "fixing things usually means my presence is erased... I'm not exactly in the history books you know."
"Right..." Dick scowled at nothing, "I guess that explains why you always insisted on being so isolated... Is Bruce Jr out there helping you?"
She laughed, "his name is Terry, I'm not sure what he is up to, but he is really annoying, and all we do is bicker."
Dick smirked, "oh"
"Oh? What does that mean?"
He chuckled, "nothing, forget I said anything."
"Richard" she whined and he laughed but shook his head.
There was a knock on the door frame, "uh... Mr. Grayson?" They both got up and went to his entryway, finding two men installing a new door while a third held out a form for Dick to sign.
"Thanks Bruce" Dick muttered and shook his head, scribbling his name on the papers, "I hope you'll come by again Quin, I have to repay you for the flowers" he smirked. "Dinner maybe?"
Terry scoffed from across the hall, Dick grinned in response.
Quin rolled her eyes, "good to know you're still the same shitty flirt as always, I'll do my best to keep you updated gramps."
Dick sighed but smiled anyway, "be safe." He kissed her cheek and let her hand go as she motioned Terry to follow.
