Bonus Chapter #2: Song Writing and Shipping
(A/N: The song is terrible, don't judge!)
About a week later, Alaska, Seafoam, and Helimorphia went to class together.
"So, what do you guys think of the others in our Winglet?" Heliamphora asked.
"You mean the ones besides that SilkWing that you were flirting with the whole time? Or just him?" Seafoam asked and faintly smiled for the first time Alaska had seen.
Helimorphia blushed. "Apollo and I have been through a lot together. I was just... looking at him to make sure he was okay."
"Oh sure," Alaska mused sarcastically. "So, what's our first class?"
"Music," replied Heliamphora. "It's with all the Winglets together."
Alaska felt a slight annoyance. That meant Koi was going to be there.
"So, looks like we're here," Heliamphora said as they found a cave with the word Music written above it in stone.
Alaska saw many new faces when she entered the music room. A greenish IceWing named Evergreen, a navy and yellow dragon, a reddish SilkWing, and... Allure. His blue scales stood out among the crowd, radiant in the sunlight pouring into the cave. He was amazing.
"Hey, Alaska."
It took Alaska a moment to realize that Allure was speaking to her. "Oh, hi, Allure."
"Attention students!" Transluce, the music teacher, called out. "Today we are going to be writing songs together. Everyone get into groups!"
"Wanna be in a group?" Allure asked Alaska with a sheepish grin.
"I'd love to," Alaska replied.
Allure's smile made Alaska almost blush. She tried to think of something else so she looked around the room. Helimorphia was with Apollo and a SandWing from Silver Winglet. Evergreen was with another IceWing and a MudWing. Seafoam was standing by herself.
"Hey, Seafoam, want to join our group?" Allure asked kindly.
"Ugh, I suppose you're the best I'm going to get," Seafoam grumbled with a glare at Alaska.
"Okay then, so what should we write about?" Allure asked.
"Uh... we could do the ocean?" Alaska suggested. "Or maybe the rainforest?"
"I don't know, but you guys can decide," Allure said. "I'll go get instruments."
As, Allure left, Alaska could feel Seafoam glaring. "Why do hate me?" she muttered.
"What?!" Seafoam barked.
"Never mind. What do you think we should write about?"
"Well..."
"Well, what?" Alaska asked.
"We could write a song dedicated to the dead," Seafoam told her, "I mean, almost everyone's lost someone. It... might be nice for them to hear."
"That's a great idea." Alaska was surprised that Seafoam had thought of it! Unless...
"Have you ever lost someone?" Alaska asked Seafoam.
Seafoam mumbled something about Alaska knowing all about it, but all she said was, "Yeah. I lost my parents when I was one."
"That's awful, I'm so sorry."
"It is awful."
For a long time Alaska thought about this. Was this the reason why Seafoam was so unhappy and mean? She had a good reason to be.
"My Grandma died before I hatched," Alaska told Seafoam. "I know I never met her, but I still miss her every day."
Seafoam just stayed silent.
"I found some drums," Allure said as he returned to the group. "So what did I miss? Did guys find out what to write about?"
"We're writing a song dedicated to the dead," Alaska explained. "It was Seafoam's idea!"
"Wow, good idea, Seafoam!"
"Thank you," Seafoam said with one of her rare smiles.
By the time the song was finished, Alaska, Seafoam, and Allure all seemed satisfied with their work.
"Alright, class!" Transluce announced. "Time to present your songs.
The results were... ummmm... interesting. Many did heavy raps, and there was a song about rain by the navy and yellow dragon.
Finally it was Alaska, Seafoam, and Allure's turn. Alaska decided to play the drums instead of sing. She was not a good singer in crowds.
I'm not sure I'm good with drums, either, she thought. Of course... she could always enchant them, but she wasn't going to.
"But they live on! They live on in our hearts!" Seafoam and Allure sang the chorus loud and proud. "The dead live on, yes in our hearts. Oh it might seem like just another song, but the dead truly live on."
The crowd clapped and Alaska, Seafoam, and Allure took a seat.
"And now for Koi and Omnicron!" Transluce announced.
Alaska winced. This wasn't going to be good. Especially since poor Omnicron looked like Koi was the only partner left. He was playing the piano while Koi got up to sing.
"This song is for my one and only true love!" Koi proclaimed. "Princess Alaska!"
Helimorphia gave Alaska a look from the crowd that said I feel so sorry for you.
The song was about how Alaska... had scales that shimmered like the moon on a pale winter's night?! Her voice was like a chorus of oceans letting out a whisper as one?! Could nights even be pale? Why the heck were oceans in a chorus?
When the song was over, Koi took a bow, Transluce clapped alone, but everyone could tell that the teacher didn't like it, either. Omnicron looked embarrassed. Allure looked very uneasy. Seafoam looked like she was about to throw up. Kaioa was staring sympathetically at Alaska. Alaska... wasn't surprised that Koi had done this.
There were a few more songs after that. After class, everyone agreed that class had been... an experience.
"Oh my gosh, Alaska, I'm so sorry!" Heliamphora exclaimed when class was over. "Koi is so annoying."
"I have to live with him," Alaska groaned. "Wavepool adopted him, so he lives in the palace. That happened just about every day!"
"You know, Allure looked really upset to see Koi singing about you like that," Heliamphora remarked. "I bet he's got a crush!"
"Allure, a crush on me?! I doubt it."
"Oh, please, he loves you! You better start thinking of ship names. Allureska or Alaskure? Or make just Alasure? It's very hard thinking of them. I'm still tied between"— but then the LeafWing stopped and blushed.
Alaska knew what she meant. "So you do like Apollo!"
"... Yes, but don't let word get around school!" Helimorphia made Alaska promise and she did.
"I think it's sweet that you like him," Alaska told her.
"I know, it's just... I'm not sure if he likes me back."
"Well, I could always ask him. And I could just say that I was curious, considering how much you two have been through."
"Thanks, Alaska, but I think I'm going to tell him myself. I trust Apollo, and I don't want to go behind his back."
"Okay, I understand."
"So," Heliamphora said, changing the subject. "I think I hear Koi."
"Great," Alaska groaned, "Let's go to the prey center. Anywhere that he isn't."
"Uh..."
"Hello, Princess," Koi greeted Alaska as he strode over to her.
"Uh... hi, Koi," muttered Alaska with a hint of fury.
"Did you like my song?" Koi asked.
"Ummm..."
"Koi!" Helimorphia yelled. "Alaska is not into you! Leave her alone!"
Please, please, please listen to her!
"I don't believe you, LeafWing!" Koi said to Alaska's dismay. "My princess loves me as I love her!"
KOI , JUST GO AWAY!! Alaska thought at him.
It looked like Koi was being thrown across the hall by invisible talons. Helimorphia was in shock but Alaska realized what had happened.
My magic...
Koi seemed really hurt after hitting a rock wall, but it was nothing a quick trip to the infirmary couldn't fix. As teachers escorted him to the hospital cave, Helimorphia turned to Alaska.
"Alaska, what in three moons was that?!"
"I-I... don't know," Alaska lied. "Uh, I'm going to go back to my cave to study. See you tomorrow!"
And with that, Alaska fled down the hall, away from anyone else she could hurt. If her magic had been that strong then... what other terrible things was it capable of?
