5. Obsidian - Of a glassy appearance.
The trees really were as close together as his father had told him; Tyler was a skinny boy, but even he had to go left and right, right and left, just to wind through them.
They were so close together, the tops leaning towards one another, it seemed as if the branches were whispering to each other. Tyler wondered what they talked about.
As Tyler got closer to the sound, he began to see a faint glow emanating from in front of him. He gripped his flashlight tightly, as if prepared to wield it as a weapon against whoever, or whatever was making the sound.
Finally, Tyler pushed between two particularly close trees, and found it.
He was in a clearing, though it was obviously not natural. A huge, twisted wreck of metal was to one side of the clearing, and branches covered it, as if it had crash-landed. Indeed, it must have: it had seemingly smashed several of the trees, leaving the ground covered in bits of wood and leaves. Tyler didn't know of anything that could have utterly destroyed the trees here, even if it had fallen from the sky.
The faint glow, along with the sound, were both coming from the metal. Tyler shone his flashlight over it, but there was no apparent change or difference, except that the light seemed to reflect off of the metal.
It was so beautiful. Tyler had never seen anything like it. It was black, sort of, but it had little white flecks, almost like stars. The whole thing was gleaming and shining, even in the dark. If Tyler had to choose a word to describe the metal, he would have immediately selected obsidian.
He approached cautiously. Upon closer inspection, he realized the metal was not at all twisted, but in fact formed and crafted to be the way it was. It had indents in the side, though he didn't know what they were for; were they only decoration, or did they serve a purpose?
Just above Tyler's head was a black object of the same material as the metal. The sound was coming off of it in waves, as was the glow. It seemed to be an antennae of some sort. It stuck just off the side of the large metal object, reaching out and then pointing upwards, towards the sky. Curiously, Tyler turned his big doe eyes to the antennae and reached one delicate arm up to touch it.
"Please don't touch that."
