thirty
Jimin let Seokjin wipe of his jacket again, let him fuss over his hair and outfit and bag until, finally, he felt calmer. Seokjin stepped back and sent Jimin an apologetic smile, and Jimin just grinned back at him. He didn't mind being fussed over, not when in less than an hour he'd be back with Yoongi, back at home.
"A-are you ready, then?" Seokjin asked, voice quavering. Jimin smiled at him sadly. Was he ready? Absolutely. Was Seokjin ready? Absolutely not. So Jimin shook his head and started picking at his nails. "We're all going to miss you so much, Jimin. They would kill me if they knew I was letting you go without a goodbye."
"Can I ask you something, hyung?" Jimin asked, looking up from his hands. Seokjin nodded fervently – anything to get Jimin to stay just a little longer. "Why didn't you just tell me that you wanted me to be happy? Like, why did you have to send Tae to sabotage my mission? It kind of drove a wedge between us for a little bit and he punched me in the face after Hoseok — Hoseok. What's going to happen to Hoseok? Doesn't he deserve a happy ending too? What am I supposed to tell him? 'Sorry but Taehyung had a boyfriend all along he only dated you so I could be happy'? That's horrible, hyung!"
"Don't worry about Hoseok, Jimin. He won't remember Taehyung. Neither of them will. He wasn't there on official business, so he didn't make any residing connections to any of the mortals–" Jimin cut him off with a quiet that's terrible and Seokjin continued. "As for the sabotaging your mission thing. Originally, Taehyung was supposed to be sent on an official mission as your matchmaker, then I realized we'd probably get into a predicament much like this one, so I called the mission off and told him to do what he could to make you happy. I had no intention of him and Hoseok getting together, it just happened."
"How does Jungkook feel about that?" Jimin asked. He'd been wondering since he found out about Jungkook and Taehyung if Jungkook knew that, technically, Taehyung cheated on him.
"It was for work, he understands. I'm not going to say I didn't walk in on some very angry–"
Jimin slapped his hands over his ears. "Hyung, I don't want to know!"
"Yelling. They were yelling, Jimin, dear god. But all is good in Taekook land now." Jimin nodded and shuffled his feet, then readjusted his book bag straps, then shuffled his feet some more. Everything he'd been wondering about Seokjin had cleared up, and now he was actually ready to go. It was early, only five thirty am, and Jimin knew somewhere in the back of his head that his friends wouldn't be up anytime soon, no matter how he hoped.
But, his friends always seemed to come through for him, or at least Namjoon, who walked into Seokjin's office dragging two very tired boys behind him. Taehyung was just barely hobbling along, his cheek smushed against Namjoon's shoulder and his mouth hanging wide open. Jungkook had taken to sleepily flittering his wings to keep him a little off the ground while he clutched to Namjoon's head to keep him steady. When Namjoon stopped walking Taehyung flopped onto the floor and Jungkook just barely landed on his feet.
"They're something else, aren't they?" Namjoon said, stepping out of the heap of limbs on the floor at his feet. He opened his arms and Jimin gave him a hug, having to stand on his toes to whisper a quiet 'take care of Seokjin hyung for me' in his ear. Namjoon blushed and nodded, and Jimin anxiously awaited the falling of glitter from his fingers, but it never came.
"Deja vú," Jungkook said, hugging Jimin tightly. Jimin sighed and laid his head on Jungkook's shoulder. They stood there for a minute, Jungkook's tall frame looming over Jimin until Taehyung hauled himself up off the floor and started poking Jungkook in the ribs, silently asking him to move.
"Hey, best friend." Taehyung said, shoving Jimin's shoulder. Jimin smiled sadly at him and pushed him back, and Taehyung smiled. Jimin opened his arms for a hug and Taehyung held him tightly, practically squeezing the life out of him. Jimin wrapped his arms around Taehyung's back, noticing for the first time the lack of feathers.
"You're wearing one of my shirts," Jimin commented into Taehyung's shoulder. Taehyung shrugged and mumbled back, more comfy to sleep without them, Jimin heard Jungkook let out a sound of agreement. Everything got quiet and Jimin sighed, sagging his body against Taehyung's. "I wanna say that I'll see you later, that I'll hurry to pass the mission and be home in no time."
"Don't make me cry." Taehyung said, pulling away from Jimin and grasping his shoulders. Jimin already had tears in his eyes and Taehyung sighed. "You're going to be happy, Jimin."
"But I'm going to miss you guys so much." Jimin whimpered, bottom lip wobbling. Suddenly Jimin was trapped in the middle of a matchmaker and fairy sandwich, with Namjoon coming up on the outside and wrapping his long arms around all four of them at once. Jimin laid his head on whomever's shoulder was nearest to him – Seokjin, he thought – and let himself be enveloped by the warmth his friends were emitting.
"We'll come visit you," Jungkook promised, then he got whacked in the back of the head because there was no way to ensure that they could leave. Jimin knew this, but the effort made him feel better all the same. "And we'll call you all the time, if Namjoon hyung can steal the Great Book it shouldn't be so hard for Taehyung hyung."
"Hey!" Namjoon and Taehyung both yelled together, although Taehyung's was followed by a, "why do I have to steal it?"
"Because my wings aren't strong enough to carry myself and the book, you're the only one that can do it if we don't want to get caught." Jungkook said. Jimin could feel his breath skimming the top of his head and he squirmed.
"Fair enough," Taehyung agreed while Namjoon stood behind them, scoffing, mumbling I did just fine, thank you. And other such things until Seokjin patted his head and thanked him for all his prior efforts.
It was nearly six o'clock, the time in which all the council members usually got up. The hug slowly, but surely, dissipated and Jimin was left standing in the center of the room, alone, holding onto his book bag straps. Seokjin raised his wand to send Jimin away when Taehyung yelled, "wait!" and ran out of the room.
The four other boys froze, Seokjin's hand suspended in the air as they waited for Taehyung to return with bated breath. Taehyung flew around the corner merely two minutes later, holding Yoongi's pajama pants in his hand.
"I forgot to give these back, y'know because you said maybe you should try to live without them? Well, there's no point in that anymore so, here. Yoongi will want these back." Taehyung walked around Jimin and shoved the pants in his bag before stepping back next to Jungkook. Jungkook gently wrapped his hand around Taehyung's and Jimin cooed at them.
"So, Jimin, you ready?" Seokjin asked, lifting his hand once more. Jimin nodded and adjusted his bag on his back.
"I love all of you guys. But this isn't a goodbye, just an 'I'll see you later'." Jimin said. Everyone nodded and Seokjin waved his hand. Jimin's chest compressed and he closed his eyes, and he flew through the division between the supernatural and mortal world with the sound of sirens in the background, signalling that an unapproved mission was underway.
—
Jimin landed successfully on his feet this time around, although this didn't stop him from having to grip onto the wall to keep himself steady. He looked around and noticed that he was in his apartment building, smack dab in the middle of the lobby. Jimin caught the eye of the receptionist, who looked horrified that someone had just appeared out of nowhere in the middle of her lobby.
"Hi, sorry about that." Jimin said, wiping his hands on the front of his pants. His palm ran over a bump in his pocket and he reached his hand into his pocket, pulling out a small shiny key. Jimin almost cried in joy. "I'll just be going. To my apartment. Which I rent. From you. Okay, bye."
Jimin ran to the steps, deciding that the elevator would be too slow and took them two at a time. He reached the fourth floor in record time, and wiped the sweat off his forehead as he walked down the hall. Jimin's heart thumped in his chest when he reached his door, knowing that in five more feet he'd be at Yoongi's.
Jimin took the extra five steps and knocked lightly on the apartment door, hoping and praying that his heart would stay safely tucked behind his ribcage. He heard yelling, then some more yelling back until eventually Hoseok opened the door. He looked annoyed, like he'd been doing something and Yoongi was too lazy to get off the couch and open the door for himself.
"Hi," Jimin said quietly, looking at his feet. Hoseok stared at him for a second, and Jimin noticed for the first time the toothbrush hanging from his mouth. It seemed as if his predictions had been correct.
"Holy shit." Hoseok replied. Jimin giggled and he heard Yoongi's voice from the living room, 'who's at the door? Don't buy anything, you remember last time.' "Hyung there's something at the door for you."
"Is it a package? Just bring it in, I'm warm." Yoongi said. Jimin could hear Glee playing in the background and he wanted to roll his eyes.
"No, hyung, I think you need to come get it yourself." Hoseok said, never taking his eyes off Jimin. Toothpaste was running down his chin but he didn't seem to notice it.
"Ungrateful brat, I let you live here most of the time for free and you can't even bring in my mail." Yoongi grumbled, but Jimin could hear the couch springs squeaking as Yoongi lifted himself off of it. Hoseok backed away from the door slowly, and Yoongi took his spot, glaring at the floor. "I didn't even order anything so–"
Yoongi looked up and cut himself off, his mouth falling open. Yoongi stared at him for a minute before stepping backwards and slamming the door. Jimin's eyes widened and he went to turn around, but Yoongi started yelling again.
"Hoseok!" Yoongi yelled, still standing close enough to the door that Jimin could hear him. "Why didn't you tell me Jimin was just going to show up? I would have fucking showered!"
"I told you to shower like four days ago, hyung! But did you listen to me, no. Did you actually slam the door in his face? You idiot, he probably thinks you don't want to see him." Hoseok yelled back. The door opened once again, with more ferocity than it'd been closed.
Yoongi looked at Jimin for a minute longer, seemingly contemplating whether to hug him or not. Jimin made the decision for him, dropping his bag to the ground and throwing his arms around Yoongi's shoulders. Yoongi reacted immediately, wrapping his arms around Jimin's waist and putting his face in the younger boy's neck. Jimin sighed in content and rested his head on Yoongi's shoulder. It was the first time in three weeks that he felt warm. The first time in three weeks that he felt at home.
Jimin tried to pull away, but when he moved his head Yoongi's hand came up and pushed it back down onto his shoulder before tightening his arms around Jimin even more. Jimin was standing on his tip toes, so he was just tall enough to kiss Yoongi's temple. Yoongi seemed to remember after that that he was allowed to kiss Jimin and pulled back just enough to allow him the space to press his mouth against Jimin's.
Yoongi tasted of cupcake, something he'd seemed to be eating a lot of lately, but this time Jimin couldn't bring himself to pull back and ridicule him for eating the treat without him. Instead he moved his arms from where they were wrapped around Yoongi's shoulders to around his neck and opened his mouth.
"Could you two stop making out in the doorway?" Hoseok asked, a bit of irritation in his tone. Jimin felt the hand on the back of his head slip away, and by the offended scoff that came from Hoseok a minute later, Jimin had guessed Yoongi had flipped him off. Hoseok grumbled under his breath, something along the lines of, "I hope you swallow each other's tongues and choke."
Jimin pulled away first, needing to breathe, and Yoongi took the time to just look at him, at his flushed cheeks and swollen lips and dark under eyes. Yoongi ran the pads of his thumbs across Jimin's cheekbones and pressed another kiss to his lips.
"I love you." Yoongi said. He'd expected Jimin to look at least a little surprised, but Jimin just smiled and whispered, "I know," before grabbing Yoongi face and kissing his cheeks and his nose and his lips.
"I love you too." Jimin told him between placing kisses on each of Yoongi's eyelids. Yoongi let him even though it tickled, he even let Jimin run his hands through his greasy hair. Yoongi relished in Jimin's touch, taking in every single movement after being deprived of it for weeks. Yoongi leant his head against Jimin's and sighed as the younger boy ran his finger's up and down Yoongi's neck.
"I love you, I love you, I love you," Jimin whisper chanted as they stood in Yoongi's doorway. It felt nice to be able to finally admit it to himself. He'd always known, but only now did he find it in himself to say it out loud in full earnest with Yoongi in front of him, holding him life the last life preserver left on a rapidly sinking ship.
"I honestly didn't think you were going to come back." Yoongi mumbled into Jimin's shoulder. Jimin laughed and Yoongi took a moment to think it was the best sound he'd heard in his entire life.
"I told you I'd see you later, didn't I?" Jimin asked. Yoongi smiled at him and Jimin's heart swelled. To hell with giving love, Jimin thought, if someone had to go their whole life without this feeling, the feeling of being needed and wanted and depended on, Jimin felt sorry for them. He felt sorry for the old bearded matchmaker and the cynical councilwoman. They'd never get to experience real love if they were too busy trying to make everyone else happy.
"But just take a week and prove to yourself that you really don't like it here, because I've seen you in both places Jimin, and this is the happiest you've ever been."
Taehyung was kind of an idiot, but sometimes he did the word thing pretty well.
