Chapter 6
"What?", he snapped at me. I drifted my eyes to the floor while I followed the maid inside the room. I was never a person to judge people but I got a feeling that he was an asshole.
"Sir, this is your helper", she said in a sharp tone. What was it with people and the curt tone?
"Leave", he barked and the girl scurried off the room. The room was getting hotter as his eyes remained on me. I stood like a rock looking at the ground. Under normal circumstance, I would've snapped at the person for staring at me but nothing was normal for me. I had to stand there while a stranger was accessing me, why? Because I need money.
"Hey man", Wren tapped his shoulder. I didn't even know he wasn't in the room until then.
The guy never replied and I watched his legs walk into a closet.
"Hey", I lifted my eyes to meet Wren's non-chalant expression.
"You don't have to work here if you are not okay with it, Amy. I will help you." I could the concern in his voice. I appreciated his thoughts but for the sake of my dignity I needed the job.
I shook my head, "I'll be alright, Wren"
"He's a good guy with a bit trouble. He will be tolerable with time", he said lowly with a chuckle. I nodded my head.
Wren left for a call and was waiting for me outside. I took this time to look around his room. Everything was Grey. From vanity to sheets, grey. I tensed when I heard the door shut and the pair of legs came into my line of vision.
"Look at me", the low voice shoot electricity through my body. I slowly averted my eyes to look into the lush green which was staring at me. I never uttered a word while we were having stare contest. The weird thought made me chuckle.
"Am I joke to you?", his voice boomed making me still. Now I thought about it I didn't know the sudden urge to laugh came over. But I was sure I nailed the first impression part.
"Sorry sir", I stuttered dropping my gaze back to the grey carpet that was more interesting than him.
When he shouted to leave I didn't waste a second. I ran back to the ground floor. There wasn't a person in the living room. Wren waved at me from the door and I made my way back home. He had already informed the woman and I'll be starting tomorrow. The last night of my precious sleep and I was going to make full use of it.
I went home with two buckets of ice cream and a lot of chocolates, both of which I had no memory of buying this much for the past few years. Something came over me today, might be the glimpse of hell at work I needed the sugar high.
"Care to share?", my dad waited for me with a spoon. I opened the vanilla ice cream and sat at the edge of the couch so I could share it with dad. While we shared our day, I kept my fears at bay. I was excited, that was for sure but the nagging never stopped but it never did in other jobs as well.
By the time I went to paid and the same plain ceiling was the center of my focus, I started crying. I cried thinking about the day, the overwhelming feeling of being trapped, the happiness that I will help Kade with the money and the unfairness of our life. That was the end of good night sleep for atleast next 3 months.
The corridor was echoing my footsteps along with the soft breeze that lined along the building. It was 7 in the morning and my classes weren't until 11 so the visit to meet my mother. Not technically. I opened the door to see the familiar scene of Kade drooling with his head on the bed and Maria pouring all the love through her scratches.
She lifted her eyes from him and never did the love leave her eyes. Not like the ones that I witnessed yesterday. It made me realize how people were so different. Kindness was a universal thing and yet some chose not to be it. I mean I wasn't preaching, I know more than to be not kind to the people who hurt me or my loved ones but being rude to stranger you had no idea about their character was ridiculous.
I threw the last of the chocolates I bought at Kade who came out after brushing his super smelly mouth. I genuinely felt sorry for his girl, I would faint with his morning breathe. Maybe a good sleep and full meals might help it alleviate but those were for lucky bastards.
"What?", he scrunched his eyebrows.
I shook my head with a snort, "Just thinking of your girl who will have to deal with your smelly mouth"
He hit my forearms and sat next to his mom, "Hey!"
I rolled my eyes and plopped next to him. "So where were you yesterday?"
Oh shoot. I went over this conversation about 100 times yet I couldn't find a way to open the news to him without him going hulk on me.
"Nah Just hanging out with Wren", anyone could call my reasoning a bluff. Maria's perked eyebrows proved it.
"Date?", the next question came in an amusing tone.
"We are just friends and I will declare my guy when I date him so don't insult me like that"
I didn't know which of my words caused both of them give me mirroring smirk but I knew I was screwed.
"Your guy, huh?"
That's it. My neck and face was on fire and I could imagine myself being red as chili. The phone blaring was never perfect for my escapade. Kade picked his call and walked outside and I followed him after the nurse came to check on Maria. I need to tell him about the job.
Kade was standing at the other end of corridor but his tensed shoulder and locked jaw I knew he was angry. I walked to him and when I was close enough I could make out the words. I thought he was angry but he was furious that he had no idea about my presence.
"Fuck you. I need my money man. You promised me.", he yelled and clutched the phone tightly until his knuckles turned white. It was something the person on other end said, the next moment phone was flying across and hitting the wall.
I didn't want to look at the device because I was too much shocked about his behavior. Kade always had a cool head and this proved something was wrong.
"Kade", I mumbled not to startle him.
He turned towards me with red eyes and tears flowing down his face. My heart broke.
"Amy, what am I gonna do?", he took two strides and pulled me into the hug. If my heart was broke, knowing he was crying into my shoulder was shattering it. I didn't want anything more than to coddle him and tell him that it would be okay but we both knew it wasn't true.
"I worked so hard. He promised me the money, Am and now he is firing me because I asked for my money", he sobbed into my neck. I held my hands firm around until he crashed on his knees and I didn't hesitate to go with him.
"We will fight together, Kade. I am here for you"
"Promise me", I chuckled at his childish behavior.
"I promise that I'll be there for you until you have that sexy smirk on your face"
For the first time, he looked up at me. "Sexy, huh?"
I was going to laugh out loud the way he asked the question a red nose and puffed eyes. But he deserved the ego boost, no matter what he went through he was a handsome guy to me. God I was thinking like Maria.
I nodded clipping my mouth shut tightly from laughing.
"What am I gonna do?", he asked with his heads on my shoulder.
"What are we gonna do? We are gonna figure out something", I firmly say and emphasis on we . He nodded and we both sat on the floor with our back to the wall
