🌓 Chapter 16: Some Things Don't Change 🌗

~~~~~~~~~Third Person POV~~~~~~~~~
Hours had passed since that battle.
It was already almost noon, and the four of them were lying on the living room couch. Aiden had already called Fi's parents as well, so the four of the adults were in the room too, taking care of them.
Jake and Cassie came in a hurry after hearing about the fight, worried beyond belief and being there for their friends.
After what felt like forever, Gabe's eyes finally fluttered open, though still a bit squinted as he flinched at the light. Sage looked over, gently petting her son's hair. "Hey.."
"... hi..." His voice was quiet, barely a whisper. It was a challenge of its own to simply speak.
"How do you feel..?"
"... e... e-everything... hurts..."
Her heart sunk at the words, biting her lip to stop tears from forming. Yes, he was healing, and in only a matter of days he'd be back to how he always is. But that can't stop a mother's worries, it's a horrible sight to see your child like this.
Not just one, two of her kids were in horrible shape right now, and the other three stared in worry. Fiona's siblings were also here; and Simon, being the oldest of the younger group, was assigned to keep an eye on all the little ones while they stayed in the basement living room.
Jade was still deep asleep, with Jake sitting on the ground beside the couch, holding her hand. Fiona had been mumbling a few things from time to time, trying to wake herself up by any means.
Finally, Lara was in the worst shape, having already been struck by the electric shock waves and not being able to recover fully. Her fingers trembled, and from her features, you could tell whatever she dreamt of made her tense.
Maybe when afraid.
Gritting his teeth, Gabe tried his very best to sit up, ignoring all the jolts of pain that stabbed through every nerve in his body, Sage quickly wrapping an arm around him. "Gabe, you need your rest.."
"W-where... is Wes...?"
"We don't know, he disappeared when we found you.."
"N- needs... to be... s-stopped..."
His mother forced him to lie back down. "You won't be able to stop him if you don't recover, so just rest for now.."
He didn't respond, just stared at the ceiling for a long while, until his eyes finally gave in and he fell asleep once again. Sage let out a sigh, looking at her husband who had just placed a warm towel over his daughter's forehead. "You're sure they'll be okay..?"
"Yeah, these should help them recover faster.."
She nodded in reply, and Aiden sat beside her, placing a hand over hers. "Besides, they're strong.. They got it from you, after all.."
"Oh, stop.." She gently pushed him away with a small smile, and he let out a warm chuckle. That was one thing she truly loved about him, even in their darkest moments, he'd always find a way to make her smile.
Noah then walked over from the kitchen, placing down a tray of warm hot chocolate for them before sitting beside Fiona with a small sigh. "I always hopes they'd never go through something like this.."
"I don't think this was a coincidence.." Aiden replied. "They had the change to ignore this, but they chose to stay.."
Still, of course they didn't want their children to be in such pain, it was a horrible sight to see. But he was right, they weren't children anymore, they had a mind of their own, they could make their own choices.
However, they were all startled when a small scream was heard from the attic, followed by a faint explosion. The three of them quickly ran upstairs, seeing Iv sitting on the floor as she coughed, fanning away a strange pink smoke.
Noah quickly kneeled down at her side. "You okay..?!"
"Yeah, I'm fine, don't worry." He helped her stand up. "But this is more difficult than I thought."
After the kids all learned about magic, the attic went from the old and dusty storage room to a magic study room. Gabe was the one who used it the most, but Iv decided to use it to see if she could get any information on Wes's newfound magic.
No dice, no matter what she looked for, it was as if it was all locked away.
"So you've had no luck figuring out what happened to this Wes boy..?" Aiden asked, taking one of the books that were spread across the desk.
She shook her head. "Something's keeping me from going any further. I can find a way to break the spell, I've seen it before, but I'll need some time."
"I'll stay to help."
"Alright, we'll make sure the kids heal well." Sage replied beside she and Aiden walked back downstairs.
They had hoped to never deal with an overpowered supervillain again.
But I guess fate was done letting them rest.
