Chapter 40: The RUINS

The brunet touched his cheeks and huffed.

"Yep.  I've been reduced to the size of a kid again...."

He looked at his arms and rolled his sleeves back; he checked his Okami sword.

It popped out as a knife.

Cry sighed before letting it disappear in a flash of red.

Cry glanced around with worry.

"Guys?  Anyone?"

*You called out.

*But no one came.

Cry sweatdropped at the black box floating above him.

'....What the f***?  Is this thing narrating what I'm going through?'

The brunet tapped the box.  It suddenly blinked out.

Cry shrugged and looked about the area; there was a pathway leading out of the cave--

The brunet then heard aloud scream of pain.

Cry quickly ran towards the sound, dashing through a large gate.

He came upon a dimly lit clearing of grass; he saw a little brunette girl there, wearing a dark blue sweater with pink stripes on it.  She was clutching her wrist, which looked a bit red and hurt.

There was a creepy smiling flower in front of the injured girl; Cry frowned.

'Ah sh**, it's Flowey.  I knew it, I'm in Undertale.' "Hey!  Ya' big, dumb flower!"

The said flower glared at Cry before giving a warped smile to him.

"Big words for a scrawny kid!   D I E !"

Flowey sent a simple barrage of bullets.

What the flower didn't expect, though, was for Cry to dodge.

'Huh, looks like this kid's got a few moves.' "Beginners' luck, brat!"

Cry grinned and blinked in surprise when he saw a sea-blue heart appear on his chest.

'....Cool!'

The brunet then turned his right hand into a mass of wind; Flowey widened his eyes with shock, dropping his warped grin.

'This brat can use magic!?  B-But....he's a human!'

Cry whacked the flower away from the brunette; Flowey made a soft, surprised shriek.

Cry then crouched beside the small brunette girl.

"Hey!  Are you alright?"

The small girl lifted her head to show......closed eyes(?).

'....Can she see me?  Are her eyes open?  Uuuuuuhhh......'

She moved her hand and wrote in the soft dirt underneath her.

*I'm fine.  Thank you for saving me.*

The brunette smiled tentatively before wincing; her wrist was starting to purple.

Cry blinked and frowned thoughtfully.

The brunet focused on his wind magic and thought of.....well...happy thoughts.

The wind turned into a lighter shade of green.

Cry touched her wrist....and the bruise disappeared, instantly.

'Oh....well...that's new and awesome!'

The brunette looked at her hand with amazement before smiling up at Cry while still keeping her eyes closed; she wrote in the dirt once more.

*Thank you!*

Cry grinned.

"What's your name?  I'm Cry."

*Frisk.*

'Yay~!  My little buddy!' "Nice ta' meet ya' Frisk!"

"Y O U   B R A T S . . ."

Cry glanced behind himself in time to see a vine whip out towards him.

The plant quickly wrapped itself around his neck and squeezed before lifting the brunet off of the ground.

Flowey was looking a lot more pissed now.

"I won't just kill you--oh no--I'm gonna tear you limb from limb and hear you scream!"

Cry gritted his teeth and his left hand sparked to life, burning the vine around his throat.

Flowey also seemed to jolt and loosened his grip; Cry landed on the ground safely.

Before the flower could make any curse words, Cry placed his hands over Frisk's ears; the brunet made a pouty face at the flower.

"Now, now, watch your language, mister!  It's bad influence if you curse in front of children!"

Flowey growled as sent out his bullets; Frisk whimpered and Cry narrowed his eyes when the pellets started to circle them.

The flower grinned.

"D I E ."

And then Flowey started to laugh as the pellets started to close in.

Cry narrowed his gaze further, sea-blue eyes glowing slightly.

But then the bullets disappeared; Flowy blinked in confusion and anger.

And then a ball of magenta-red flames whacked Flowey away.

Footsteps were heard....and a.....goat-woman appeared?

Cry grinned mentally.

'Goat-mom!'

"Such a terrible creature, torturing two, poor, innocent youths."

Her purple-tinged fur looked really fluffy as her lilac eyes glowed brightly with warmth.

"Hello.  My name is Toriel, caretaker of the RUINS."

Toriel smiled warmly as she reached a hand out each of the two children.

"Come!  I shall guide you through the catacombs!"

~~

Toriel had led the two through the basics.

And when she had to leave, Cry made sure to protect Frisk during the fights.

During their first battle, Froggit hopped towards them; Cry and Frisk's SOULs appeared above their chests.

Cry helped Frisk dodge when the frog tried to hop on top of them by jumping over the amphibian.

Cry then held a small notebook out to Frisk, encouraging her to write something to the Froggit.

She looked a bit flustered, but she did so, writing a genuine compliment to the Froggit.

*I think you're kinda cute.*

Froggit didn't seem to understand, but he blushed anyways, leaving 2 GOLD(G) behind after Frisk SPAREd him.

They met a few Whimsuns, more Froggits, Looxs, Migosps, Vegetoids and Moldsmals.

Cry kept Frisk from getting injured; the brunet hummed thoughtfully.

'....Hmmmm...is this what being a big brother feels like?'

They then came upon a Spider Bake Sell.

They both left 7G to get a Spider Donut each.

And then they met Napstablook, who was kinda lying down in their way.

They politely tried to move him, but the poor ghost was crying acid tears; Cry cracked a joke.

"Why did the sad ghost go into an elevator?"

Napstablook blinked his giant eyes, tilting his head slightly; Cry continued.

"To lift his spirits!"

Cry winked at the ghost.

Napstablook smiled weakly, but he did look a bit happier.

"Let me try....."

His tears started to go upwards instead, defying the laws of gravity.

Slowly...a top hat started to form.

Napstablook smiled tentatively.

"I-I call it...'Dapper Blook'....."

Cry clapped his hands and smiled brightly; Frisk giggled softly.

Napstablook's smile brightened slightly.

"Ah....I usually go to the RUINS to stay away from bad people.....but I met two nice people today......thank you...."

The ghost disappeared, and Cry and Frisk were able to cross.

After many puzzles and FIGHTs, they finally came upon Toriel's home in the RUINS.

She prepared rooms for them and baked them butterscotch-cinnamon pie.

The two only stayed for a few hours, but Frisk wanted to leave.

Toriel tried her best to keep the two from the exit, but Frisk and Cry stayed firm.

The goat-monster then released her fire magic at them; Cry redirected the fire with his wind.

Toriel blinked with shock.

"....My child.....you...you can use magic?"

Cry nodded and used his Outsider mark, using Blink to suddenly appear in front of her.

Toriel was stunned; Cry started to speak.

"Frisk may not have magic, but I do--so I'll use this power of mine to protect Frisk with my life.  But Frisk herself is pretty strong--not in FIGHTing--but in her kindness."

Lilac eyes teared up; Toriel saw that Frisk had a hand on the MERCY button in front of her.

"....My children....please....I don't...want you two to die...."

Cry inclined his head slightly before grinning.

"Knock, knock!"

Toriel blinked owlishly before following the brunet's lead.

"Wh-Who's...there?"

The brunet's grin widened.

"Boo."

Toriel knew where this was going, but she said it anyways.

"'Boo' who?"

Cry gave a hug to her.

"Aww, don't cry, okay?  We won't die, alright?"

Toriel gave a watery laugh at his joke and words.

"Pathetic, isn't it?  I...I can't even stop two children from going..."

Frisk joined the hug; Toriel returned the hug to both of them.

".....Once you leave here, please, don't come back.  I....don't come here ever again."

Frisk look hurt at this, but Cry patted her head comfortingly when the embrace was broken.

Toriel then stood up to her full height, smiling sadly at them.

"...Be safe, dear children."

She walked away, turned back to look at them, before continuing her trek down the long, purple halls.

Frisk gripped the hem of her sweater, sniffling as she scrubbed a few tears away.

Cry took her hand and led her through the large gates.

....It was dark.

And then there was...Flowey.

The flower sneered at the two of them.

"Clever.  Very~clever.  You think that you can get through all of this without FIGHTing?  How wrong you are!"

His face turned warped.

"Heh....but what if you meet someone who only wants to FIGHT?  What then?  Will you   k i l l   them?  Or will you die right there?  Oh~the possibilities~!"

Cry glared at the flower.

Flowey simply laughed before disappearing into the ground.

Frisk gripped Cry's hand tightly, and the gamer simply squeezed the hand back in reassurance.

Cey turned to Frisk, smiling warmly.

"Don't worry.  I'll protect you."

Frisk still had her eyes shut, but she smiled back.

~~

"So this is the outside of the RUINS..."

The brunet then glanced to the side and saw something shiny in a snow-covered bush; he trotted over to it.

There was a camera in there.

Cry looked at it thoughtfully before grinning widely, making a peace sign at the camera; he then waved Frisk over.

"Hey, Frisk!  Check this out!"

Frisk quickly went over and blinked in surprise at the camera there; Cry merely smiled.

"Come on, Frisk!  Smile for the camera!"

Frisk blinked before grinning widely.

The two made silly faces for a while before getting tired of it; they continued their journey.

Frisk shifted a little closer to Cry, a bit anxious of the looming trees before them.

Cry patted her head as they started to walk down the path.

The brunet saw a branch--a big one.

Cry and Frisk hopped over and continued to walk.

Snap!

The brunet whipped his head around.

...There was nothing there behind them...but the branch from before was snapped.

Cry approached the branch and poked it with his foot; the brunet glanced around.

"Well....this is no way to treet a branch!  This poor little guy did nothing!"

The brunet could've sworn he heard a stifled snort; Cry grinned mentally.

Frisk looked at Cry with confusion; she quickly wrote in the snow.

*Who are you talking to?*

Cry used sign-language, surprising Frisk slightly.

*I think there's someone following us--branches just don't suddenly break like that.  Plus....I think everyone in the Underground world likes puns!*

Frisk raised her eyebrows; Cry took it as her way of rolling her eyes; the girl then signed to Cry.

*I didn't know you could use sign-language.*

Cry rubbed his head sheepishly as he signed back.

*I looked at Goat-mom's books.  I'm pretty good at memorizing stuff, so I learned some sign-language when we were there by reading her books.*

Frisk nodded in understanding; they continued to walk.

Cry saw the big gate ahead; the brunet stopped walking and took the time to observe it.

'....Yep.  The bars are way too wide.'

"H u m a n s ."

Frisk jumped and clung to Cry; the brunet merely inclined his head slightly.

"D o n ' t   y o u   k n o w   h o w   t o   g r e e t   a   n e w   p a l ?"

Cry grinned mentally as the voice continued.

"T u r n   a r o u n d   a n d   s h a k e   m y   h a n d ."

Frisk looked over at Cry, fear visible in her eyes.

The brunet sighed and turned around, grasping the hand extended towards him.

Ppppppbbbbbbttt!

Cry laughed at the noise.

Frisk also couldn't help but giggle.

The brunet looked at the boney hand grasping his fleshy one.

He followed the hand to the owner's face.

A skeleton was looking at him with glowing, white lights in his eye-sockets.

The skeleton grinned, pleased that the two found it funny.

"Heheh.  The old whoopie-in-the-hand trick--it's always funny.  Anyways, you guys are humans, right?"

The two nodded.

The stranger winked at the two.

"That's hilarious.  I'm Sans.  Sans the Skeleton."

Cry chuckled.

"I'm Cry!  And this here is Frisk."

The girl waved shyly at Sans.

Cry then winked at the skeleton, giving a thumbs up.

"I must say....that trick was quite....humerus!"

Sans' grin widened even more.

"Patella me about it!  You're not bad for a baby bones."

Frisk made a huffing noise, punching at Cry's arm lightly.

*You're a bonehead!*

Cry winked.

"Aren't we all~?"

*CRY!*

Sans barked with laughter, doubling over slightly.

"Ahahaha--oh geez!  I'm really liking this kid!"

Cry smiled before whipping his head around; the three all heard a loud shout that sounded li--

"SANS!  I'M HERE FOR A CHECK UP ON HOW WELL YOU ARE DOING!  DID YOU FIND ANY HUMANS, SANS!?"

Cry looked back at Sans.

"....Should I be concerned about that?"

Sans shrugged.

"Well...that's my brother, and he's a human-hunting fanatic, but I don't think he's someone to worry too much about.  Although it would be good if you hid for now."

Sans gently pushed them through the gate-like way.

"Quick, hide behind that conveniently-shaped lamp."

The two did as they were told--and, surprising, the lamp hid them both.

They heard loud stomping, and then Sans spoke.

"Sup, bro."

"YOU KNOW WHAT, 'SUP' BROTHER!  IT'S BEEN EIGHT DAYS AND YOU STILL HAVEN'T RECALIBRATED YOUR PUZZLES!  YOU JUST HANG AROUND OUTSIDE YOUR STATION!  WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING!?"

"Staring at this lamp.  It's really cool.  Do you want to look at it too?"

"NO!  I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THAT!  WHAT IF A HUMAN COMES THROUGH HERE!?  I WANT TO BE READY!  I MUST BE THE ONE!  I WILL TO BE THE ONE!  I MUST CAPTURE A HUMAN!"

And the newcomer's voice became a tad bit softer.

"AND THEN...I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, SHALL BE GIVEN THE RECOGNITION I MOST UTTERLY DESERVE.  RESPECT...RECOGNITION....I WILL FINALLY BE ABLE TO JOIN THE ROYAL GUARD!  PEOPLE WILL ASK...TO BE...MY...FRIEND!  I WILL BATHE IN THE SHOWER OF KISSES EVERY MORNING--SO!  STOP!  BOONDOGGLING!  YOU GET LAZIER AND LAZIER EVERYDAY, SANS!"

"....Hmm.....maybe this lamp will help you."

"SANS, YOU LAZYBONES!"

Cry and Frisk peaked their heads out to see the shouting newcomer.

It was a taller skeleton with an orange-red scarf and some sort of white armor....

Sans grinned widely.

"Hey...I've got a ton of work done.  A skeleton!"

Cry snickered mentally and Frisk stifled her giggles.

"SANS, ENOUGH WITH THE PUNS!"

Papyrus sighed.

"HAH.......WHY MUST I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, DO SO MUCH TO GET THE RECOGNITION I DESERVE?"

The tall skeleton grinned at Sans.

"WELL, IF A HUMAN DOES COME BY, I WANT YOU TO TELL ME!  AND PUT A LITTLE MORE BACKBONE INTO, NYEHEHEHEHEHEH!"

Papyrus walked out of the scene before coming back.

"HEH!"

And he was gone once more.

Sans chuckled softly before turning to the lamp.

"Alright, you guys can come out now."

Cry rolled into the scene and struck a pose; Frisk did the same before breaking out into a fit of giggles.  Sans simply chuckled at their antics.

The brunet then dusted his jacket off, looking over at Sans with a bright smile.

"I like your bro--he's cool."

Sans' eyes glowed warmly.

"Heh, thanks."

Frisk then looked at the path Papyrus went down; she tugged on Cry's sleeve.

Sans sighed.

"Welp, looks like you two should go on ahead--but, ah, hey.  It's nothing too big, but could you reveal yourselves to Pap?  He's been pretty down lately, so seeing a human--two at that--would probably make his day, ya' know?"

Cry made a thumbs up.

"Snow problem!"

Sans snorted slightly before waving at Cry and Frisk.

"Well, I'll see you guys up ahead.  Stay safe."

Sans went back into the woods; Cry could only guess that Sans was using one of his short cuts.

Cry smiled as he took Frisk's hand.

"Let's go."

Frisk smiled and nodded her head.

The two continued their journey through the snow filled land.
