Chapter 36

"We'll be in Brighton in about an hour, Curt," Ren stated.

"Thank you, Captain," Curt replied.

"Boy, won't everyone be surprised to see us fly in on this baby!" Paul mused.

"That's for sure. Uncle Cid is gonna go bananas!" Curt chuckled.

"Curt, did you say your uncle's name is Cid?" Ren inquired.

"Yeah, why? You know him?" Curt replied.

"Cid Valant?" Ren added.

"Yeah, that's him alright," Curt answered. "How do you know him?"

"Well, I don't really know him all that well. You see, my dad was a part of Cid's original team of scientists that found out about myrrh and the crystals. My father always spoke highly of Cid. I got to meet him once when I was just a teenager living in Torenada City," Ren shared.

"Wow! What a small world. I'm sure he'll be glad to see you and hear how your father is doing," Curt said.

At that moment, Mark entered the bridge.

"Sorry to interrupt, but could I speak with you alone for a moment, Curt?" Mark asked.

"Sure," Curt replied.

Mark led Curt out of the bridge and down to one of the personnel cabins where he shut the door behind them.

"Curt, do you remember seeing a woman with my brother back in Leora?" Mark asked.

"Yeah...she was standing next to him when we flew off. Who is she?" Curt replied.

"Shara Nemora, a fellow dragon knight. We were once in love...but that is neither here nor there. I was exploring the ship, and I found this satchel that belongs to her. This must have been her quarters. This journal was in the satchel," Mark shared as he showed a worn notebook to Curt. "There isn't too much of interest, except that she mentioned in one entry that there is a rumor that Richter is close to finding the meteor. She's part of the myrrh gathering crews. Apparently, crews have been sent to all five of the myrrh trees."

"You really think Richter's gonna find the meteor? And what the heck is he going to do when he does?" Curt asked.

"I don't know, but I don't like it," Mark replied. "Let's go see if Captain Ren knows anything."

"Ok, but go easy on him. He seems like a good man, and he knows my uncle. We don't want to burn any bridges," Curt cautioned.

"Alright, Curt, I'll let you question him then," Mark said.

Curt and Mark returned to the bridge, and Curt walked over to Ren.

"Captain, do you know anything about the meteor being found?" Curt asked quietly.

"I'm sorry, Curt, but I am not allowed to disclose any information of a classified nature," Ren responded.

"Come on, Captain. Look...Mark found Shara's journal, and there was an entry in there that said Richter was close to finding the meteor. Do you know anything about that?" Curt inquired further.

"Honestly, Curt, I don't really know. All I know is that I was ordered to accompany Hamilton. We were to drop off Captain Nemora and then search for Mark over there. That's all I know. And I'm only telling you that because I respect you and your uncle...and because it's the truth," Ren noted.

"Thanks, Captain. I believe you," Curt said.

"Thanks, Curt," Ren returned.

"Captain, Brighton sighted!" Jimmy shouted.

Curt and Paul ran out onto the deck of the airship. Sure enough, there in the distance to the east, they could make out the shape of the houses and buildings that made up their beloved hometown. The two friends stood watching until the airship hung above the fields outside the town. People had already gathered in the streets, and a few who were bold enough had made their way to the fields to see what this new contraption was. Cid and Colton were among these few. As soon as Curt saw his uncle and Colton, he began to yell and wave. Cid and Colton both waved back as they watched the airship land. Once the airship had landed, Ren ordered Jimmy and the other crew members to remain with the ship to ensure its safety. Then he joined Curt and the others as they disembarked.

Cid and Colton were there to greet everyone as they walked down the ramp. Curt ran to embrace his uncle, and then he turned to greet Colton. The next few minutes were spent introducing everyone to one another and allowing Cid and Colton to marvel at the airship. Colton immediately recognized Mark as the "man in black" that he had told Curt about back in Deloam. And Cid recognized Ren as his old teammate's son, although he could not remember Ren's name. Colton greeted Autumn warmly and then helped Curt introduce her to Cid as the woman who saved Curt's life and nursed an old wounded codger of a caravaner. Finally, Cid suggested that they all retire to his house for dinner and catching up. Ren asked if food might also be provided for the rest of the crew, to which Cid replied that they would get only the best.

As the group of friends walked into Brighton, they were greeted by the rest of the townspeople who were anxious to hear the tales of their caravaners. On the way to Cid's house, Curt stopped in the town square and silently nodded to Paul, who was holding the crystal orb they had received in Fillmore. Everyone turned to watch as Paul walked over to the crystal chalice monument that stood in the center of the square. Paul carefully climbed onto the monument and slowly began to pour the orb's myrrh into a small opening near the top of the crystal. As the myrrh trickled down into the crystal chalice, the chalice began to emit a soft glow. Once Paul had emptied the orb, he turned back to everyone, smiled, and lifted the orb above his head. Everyone began to cheer and clap, overjoyed that their town was once again safe from the miasma for another year.
