I painted the world in grey and blue.
I loved the way the somber colors gently folded into each other.
But then you showed up,
With a can of red paint,
And an artistic glimmer in your eyes,
And a curling smile on your lips.
And so you painted,
For a second I watched,
As my skyline dripped in red,
And mixed with blue,
Periwinkle leached into the foreground,
Purple danced across the world,
You exchanged the red for orange,
Then there was urgency,
Then I painted back.
I illustrated in shambles of blue,
You swiped in strokes of orange,
It was ugly,
The colors did not mix.
But it was like a stellar collision,
There was a restless kind of beauty to it.
It was loud,
It was angelic,
You did not like loud.
You traded orange for a softer color;
Yellow.
Dribbles of sunshine cascaded down the blue night,
And then everything was green.
Perhaps you liked green,
For your next color choice was that exactly,
You smothered green upon green,
The world turned envious.
I thought after that,
We would paint in symphony,
I considered wrongly,
You were painting in a rainbow,
And the next color was blue.
But by then the artistic glimmer in your eyes had etiolated,
The curling smile on your lips had faded,
You picked up your paint cans,
And you left.
Now the world was a mess,
It was technicolored and clashing and unsightly,
It was something I didn't even recognize.
Now all I wanted was the color blue.
