Kickball

In school, I can't decide whether I like Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays more than I like Tuesdays and Thursdays.

On Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I have band. It gave me time to hang out with my best friend, Ian. I've known him since I was three and he knows exactly how to make me laugh. I always look forward to seeing him.

However, I also have health on these days. I hate that class. We learn about stuff we don't need to know and I'm always confused. The way the teacher does notes is extremely confusing.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays I have gym and while I hate physical activity, there's a certain someone who comes to my gym class. He has a study hall during that period and he always comes to the gym instead of, you know, studying.

His name is Leonardo Hill a.k.a. Leo.

He's only a few inches taller than me and I'm 5'3", so he's pretty short for his age. He's a senior. I'm a sophomore. He has long, brown hair that reaches his shoulders. Most people think he looks like a girl, but I think it looks really great on him. It looks really soft and I find myself wanting to run my hands through it, no matter how weird that sounds. I've never been close enough to see his eye color or directly see his face, but I can see that he's very handsome.

You see, this crush of mine is a crush from afar. The Seniors at school don't exactly talk to sophomores. I'm pretty sure he doesn't know I exist.

Unlike me, he's very skinny and athletic. He plays soccer and basketball, while I sit in a chair and play the clarinet. We're like opposites. I barely know him, but, I find myself falling for him.

The only bad thing about Tuesdays and Thursdays is that I have chorus. I can't talk to Ian in chorus and all of the songs we sing are stupid.

Today is Tuesday, that means that I have to suffer in chorus, but I get to see him.

After chorus, I went to lunch. I had french toast with ham and hash browns.

After lunch, I had History, Algebra II, and Biology, in that order.

Finally, I got to my last class of the day, gym. I walked into the girl's locker room and changed into my uniform. A gray shirt with the school's logo on it and a pair of blue shorts.

Once I was ready, I walked into the gym and sat down in my assigned spot on the gym floor. I looked around, and there he was. Leo. He was wearing a gray Aeropostale sweat-shirt and jeans. His hair looked like it always did, long and soft. He was talking to a couple of juniors in my class.

After Mr. Stevens, our gym teacher, took attendance, we gathered around him in a circle. "Okay, today we are going to play kickball! Ninth grade, you're batting first. Tenth grade, you're in the field."

I followed my friends into the field in the back corner. My friends stand there because they don't play. I stand back there so I can catch any balls that come my way. I'm not very athletic, but that doesn't mean I won't play, plus, I can actually catch pretty well. In fact, I used to play at first base, but some guy got there before me once, and I haven't played there since.

Before I knew it, we switched sides. Leo had rolled and he rolls the ball faster than anyone else, so the other team got three outs pretty quickly.

Leo kicked for our team first.

He got a home run.

Typical.

We got about halfway through our team (we have about twenty people) before we got three outs and we switched sides again.

The first three ninth graders who kicked got out, so we switched back within minutes. One of those outs, I had gotten. I caught one, so we were kicking again. This time, I got to kick. I kicked it with as much force as I could, after all, Leo was watching. It flew back to the corner and I ran for it. I made it to second base. The next person kicked. They bunted it and I ran for third. Once I got there, I realized that they were trying to get the kicker out, so I ran for home. When everyone realized I was still running, my team started cheering and clapping. The ninth graders got the kicker out and tried going after me. They threw the ball at me, but I managed to dodge it and hit home. Everyone cheered, even Mr. Stevens. Everyone was complimenting me and giving me high fives. They blew it way out of proportion.

I was getting back into line when I passed Leo. I glanced at him quickly and I saw a smile on his face. "Nice job, Chloe."

I looked at him directly this time and said, "Thanks." I didn't know he even knew my name...

Ignoring the happy feeling in my stomach, I casually walked to the back of the line. The game continued and I eventually came to kick again. I made another great kick and headed towards first base. I was almost there when the ball was thrown at me. It hit my legs and got in between them as I tried to run. I tripped and landed, face first, on the floor.

I sat up and grabbed my ankle. I could already feel the throbbing pain. I was lost in the pain and didn't notice Mr. Stevens walk up to me. "Chloe, are you okay?"

"Yeah, I think so."

"Okay, can you stand?"

I shakily got to my knees and used my uninjured ankle to stand. I tried to put pressure on my ankle only to gasp in pain and retract it immediately.

"It looks bad. Leo?"

"Yeah?"

"Will you take Chloe to the nurse's office? It needs looked at."

"Of course."

He walked over to me and took my hand. He guided my arm to rest on his shoulders. I immediately realized what he was doing and leaned into him.

"Thank you."

I was grateful for his help, it took the pressure off of my ankle. Leo took the lead and led me into the hallway. Throughout the entire thing, I hadn't even noticed that the entire gym was silent and watched the whole thing. My friends didn't even come over to see if I was okay. What kind of friends are they?

It didn't take more than a minute to get to the nurse's office.  Leo opened the door for me and I hopped in. To my surprise, he walked in behind me and shut the door. He took my arm again and led me to the small examination bench. Once I sat down, the nurse came out of her office and Leo leaned against the wall with his hands in his pockets.

"Okay, Chloe, what happened?"

Once I explained what happened, the nurse told me that I had sprained my ankle pretty badly and that I couldn't walk on it for a week.

I didn't know how to react.

I've never had to use crutches before, so I didn't know what to do.

However, the nurse knew.

She got a wheelchair out of the closet and helped me sit down in it. Leo pushed me back to the gym. On our way back, the pain in my ankle surged causing me to groan. "Does it hurt?"

What do you think?

You play soccer, haven't you sprained your ankle like this before?

Yes, it hurts!

Not like I could say that though.

"A little, but I'm fine."

When we got back to the gym, Mr. Stevens came over to the doors. Leo explained what the nurse said and Mr. Stevens went back to playing kickball. Leo however, stood next to me for the rest of the period. He didn't say anything and neither did I. When the period was over, we left.
