Chapter Six - No Good Deed
💥
Making your way back to the meeting place slowly, you weren't overly keen on rushing. Whenever you heard what could have been some students, you were quick to steer away. Although, it seemed like most of them had been caught in Mustard's gas and were unconscious at the very least.
"Energy, it's Compress reporting in. Target acquired," Compress' voice came through the com, out of breath. Probably on the run from the students Bakugou was with.
"Everyone, head to the meetup spot," you ordered, blinking heavily when you realized that you were walking a bit funnily. Did the forest really have that many trees? Or was your concussion going to get worse whilst untreated?
Pulling out your phone, you pushed down your disappointment upon seeing the crack in the screen, brought on from your fall. It was just the screen protector (hopefully). You'd replace it later. You sent Kurogiri a text saying the team was ready for pickup and everyone who was coming back would be in the clearing in ten minutes.
Despite your frequent stumbling and persistent pain... well, everywhere, you somehow - miraculously - managed to make your way to the clearing within five minutes. Which meant another five until pickup.
"I made new friends! And I found a cute boy I'm interested in! Don't tell (Y/n), I don't want her to get jealous."
"I'm more concerned about whether or not you managed to get some blood," you stepped out of the treeline, keeping your tone stern. You didn't have high hopes about Toga's success. She got too easily distracted and obsessive over certain people to move onto several others in a short span of time.
"I got one person's!"
You knew the league too well already.
"Damn, you look like you got hit by a truck," Dabi let out a low whistle, eyes travelling to the cuts on your body and the way you were holding yourself.
"I might as well have. UA has to be giving their students steroids. Where's Compress?"
"Still on his way."
"He reported in five minutes ago. He should be here-"
From above was a shocked scream, then Compress landed at your feet with three UA students on top of him.
"Woah, woah, what's this?" Twice questioned, as if the answer wasn't painfully obvious.
"Oh, hey wait. I know these kids. Who are they?"
"Of course you do, they're from Class 1A. The biggest thorn in our sides since the USJ," you really didn't have time for the kid's hopeless attempt to get their friend back, even if their success would save the League a lot of trouble in the long run.
"Give Kacchan and Tokoyami back to us!" Midoriya screamed.
Eyes widening under the mask, your hands lit up with the beginnings of an energy blast. Compress had gotten two kids instead of just the one. Tokoyami. The one who nearly killed you. Imagine what he'd do if he got too stressed again and allowed his Quirk to take control. Or what All for One would dictate must be done to him when he refused to join-
You didn't kill people who didn't deserve it. Tomura wouldn't have a problem with it. And his Quirk was too good to pass up for a power-hungry man like All for One.
"Out of the way, Compress," Dabi's hand lit up in flames.
"On it."
Without hesitation, Dabi sent a large stream of fire towards the group. Waving your hand twice, Toga and Twice got the gist of your order and jumped into action. With Dabi's initial blast separating the group, it'd be easier for the pair to pick them off.
"You gonna join in or let them handle it?" Dabi asked, his tone bored but his eyes alight with excitement.
Squinting at the group, your mind was already working out a plan. A risky and incredibly stupid plan, but it'd save trouble and potential lives in the long run.
"If I did anything more than close range right now then I'd miss completely. That Tokoyami kid sent me across the forest. I'm thinking a concussion and a few fractures."
"How many of me do you see?"
"Shut the hell up, Dabi, and focus on the mission. You're second-in-command for a reason. Take over where your leader can't."
Coming out of his marble, Compress was grumbling under his breath as he walked towards you and Dabi.
"You got Bakugou?" Dabi questioned.
"Of course," Compress reached into his pocket, rifling around for something he couldn't seem to find, "Huh?"
"Midoriya, Todoroki. We're done!" The six-armed student yelled, "He gave away his best trick. I'm not sure what your Quirk is, but it had to do with those little marbles, right? The ones you stashed in your pocket," the student held up two marbles that you knew didn't hold Tokoyami and Bakugou. Compress wasn't that stupid. In the short time you'd known each other, he liked to tell stories of his adventures as a master of magic, "So I'm guessing these are Tokoyami and Bakugou."
"You rescued them!"
"Ha, ha, ha! Well, color me impressed. Just as I'd expect from someone with so many hands."
The group began to run, and Todoroki raised an ice wall to slow you down.
"Moron," Dabi raised his hand, but both you and Compress stopped him from activating his fire.
"They aren't in those two marbles, are they Compress?"
Show me where they are. I need to know where they are. How could someone so clever not see the damage Tokoyami could do to our hideout? He needs to be taken care of before it becomes kill or be killed.
Kurogiri's misty form appeared in the clearing, blocking the students and opening several portals for each of the members.
"It's been ten minutes since the signal. Let's go, Energy."
"Sorry Izuku, but I'll see you later. Kay?" Toga chirped, stepping through her personal warp.
Twice dived through his without a goodbye. Eccentric, but you were still a bit surprised neither of his personalities said anything.
"What about the kid?"
"Don't worry. They were so proud of themselves for rooting through my pockets that I'd thought I'd let them gloat. But allow me to explain a basic tenant of magic. If I'm flaunting something shiny, it's because there's something else I don't want you to see," removing his mask, Compress held out his tongue - revealing the two marbles.
Looking around for an opportunity, you were barely able to catch a flash of blonde hair in a set of bushes off to the side. A student, caught in the cross-fire and too afraid to fight. Keeping your hand at your side, you pointed your pointer finger in the general direction of the student and let out a small burst of energy that would act as a spike of adrenaline.
Jumping out of the bushes, you had seconds to pick up on what the student was going to do. He had a large, flashy belt around his middle. A support item, likely meant to channel his Quirk. Long-range, offensive, and activating-
"Compress!" Because Compress was in the middle, you had the perfect excuse to send out an energy blast. But that damn concussion threw off your aim just enough, so along with hitting the area near the student, you skimmed Compress' face as well. Compress' mask shattered and the force of the blast caused him to spit out the marbles.
The six-armed student made a mad dive for them, as did Dabi. They each got one, Dabi snatching up one of the pair just before Todoroki could close his fist around it.
"Well, isn't that a tragedy. Poor little Shouto Todoroki."
Snapping his fingers, Compress revealed the final play you had successfully enacted. The young heroes had Tokoyami back, and Dabi held Bakugou by the neck. The normally aggressive boy didn't try to fight back. He didn't even say anything. Not until Midoriya made a move.
"Deku... stay back..."
"Checkmate."
The quiet of the bar was a far cry from the war cries the UA students were letting out - Midoriya was the main screamer - and it immediately soothed some of your raging headache.
"Bastards!" Bakugou seemed to come out of his shock.
"(Y/n)."
Grabbing Bakugou's wrist, you drained the energy from his body before he had the chance to set off an explosion in your face. He slumped to the ground, still struggling to move.
"What a fighter," you mused, kneeling down next to him and placing a hand on his head. His hair was surprisingly soft. Did he even gel it to get that spiked affect or was it naturally like that? "But it's no use."
Sucking the last strings of energy from his body, he fell to the floor unconscious. Facing your hand to the corner, a small shot from your hand stopped the buzzing in your veins and formed a large scuff mark on the floor.
"Successful?" Tomura asked, though the question was obviously directed at you.
"Three caught, Muscular, Mustard, and Moonfish. But the mission was obviously an overall success," you reported. Tomura grinned at the overall success, completely disregarding the fact that the group lost two of their biggest hitters.
"Are you gonna tell him that you lost another potential recruit?" Dabi snitched. Turning to him, you were quick to smack his arm to shut him up.
"What?" Tomura's grin quickly fell.
"A ruined exit!" Compress mourned, pulling another mask out of nowhere to replace his broken one.
"The student you were trying to 'recruit' gave me a concussion and a few sprains. Another kid tried to attack Compress and I stopped him. My vision is off so I hit him on accident. The other one got away, but Dabi got Bakugou."
"Well then, you can take care of any wounds and take the first shift with our prisoner. As punishment."
"You just don't want to do it yourself. Lazy ass," you hissed, "You really expect me to take care of everyone and watch Bakugou when I need to treat myself? You were here when the rest of us were in the field-"
Getting up from his seat, Tomura grabbed your wrist tightly with four fingers, his eyes giving a warning that you wouldn't be able to get away with giving him shit this time. You messed up letting Tokoyami go, but you didn't regret it very much either. Forget about his well being, the league didn't understand that all of your asses would be on the line if Tokoyami got stressed and destroyed the bar.
No good deed goes unpunished, right? What about a deed that did good but was mostly self-serving? Well, in return for that you got to suffer.
"Watch Bakugou after handling everyone. It wasn't a question."
Things were silent for a few seconds. Shooting Dabi a dirty look, you stepped behind the bar to get the first aid kit stored there. Kurogiri set two glasses on the bar - wine. Giving him a thankful look, you took a generous sip before getting to work. Compress took the other, taking a large drink as well.
Dabi needed some burn cream, which made you curious. His Quirk was the reason for the burn scars and skin grafts around his body, yet he continued to use his Quirk. His body wasn't made for it but he didn't stop in favor of his goal. It made you a little less mad at him.
Toga and Twice had minor bruising that just needed a bit of cream and ice. Compress had a small burn on his face from how close your energy blast got to him.
"Sorry about that," you said quietly, your mask long forgotten on the bar counter. You'd put it back on when Bakugou woke up, "And sorry about your mask too. I know how easy it is to get attached to them."
"It was a simple mistake. My exit wasn't as grand as it could be, but the overall show deserved a standing ovation."
It wasn't an accident.
Magne was sporting a cut on her brow that a butterfly bandage could fix, and Spinner was fine overall thanks to his scales.
"You can all go sleep," you told the group as you wrapped your arm tightly with bandages to help with the sprain, "First watch means I'll be up all night. Whoever wakes up first can switch with me."
"It's not fair that you're being punished for an accident. It was the bird-boys fault for giving you a concussion," Toga pouted as she left to go to the back.
"Can you show them what rooms are open?" You called after her, "There should be enough for everyone. The second bathroom is at the end of the hall."
"You got it bestie!"
The bar slowly emptied as the league went to rest. Sighing into your hand, you finished the glass of wine with two pills for your headache.
"Neither alcohol or sleep is advised for concussions. You've had one, you need to go without the other."
"Caffeine is allowed, right? I'll just have some coffee before Bakugou wakes up and wait for the next person to take over."
"You're too young to be drinking coffee as often as you do."
"I'm also too young to be the second in command of an up and coming villain operation, but here we are. I'll be fine. Can you portal over the table?"
Without another word, Kurogiri formed a portal and pulled in the table and shackles from storage. Then he was gone. After disinfecting and bandaging the rest of your cuts, you looped your hands under Bakugou's armpits and pulled him over to the vertical table. It was on the ground currently, so it was easy to slid Bakugou onto it and tie him up. Then the cuffs went on and you pushed the table so it was vertical.
"Oh my god, how many pounds of muscle do you have?" You asked the unconscious teenager across from you, "Damn."
Pulling up a plastic chair so you could sit across from him, you took a seat. It was going to be a long night.
