New Friends

I had never studied in an actual school before so it was pretty obvious that I lacked basic social skills. Mingling with people, asking them for their numbers, smiling at random students was thus all foreign to me.
I was trained by my mom to always be aware of everything happening around me. To be prepared at all costs. To never make unecessary conversations. To never even bother looking at someone unless very important.

Many people came up to me after my confrontation with Candice, tried to create conversations but I shrugged all of them off. I Do Not Want so much attention. I Cannot Have so much attention. Knowing two people and being friends with only them was substantial for me.

Britt and Chase helped me get my schedule and showed me around the school. They tried to get me updated on all the gossip circulating around (which I couldn't care less about). Apparently Derek had cheated on Sophia with Margot because he felt that their relationship was crumbling. I mean, I don't bloody care who's dating and who's hating! 'First world' problems like these were the only things that bothered these people. If only they knew what actual problems were and what people like me went through everyday...

After going through the do's and dont's of survival in Haywood High the two of them left for their first class. They had English Literature while I had Calculus. I was at my locker putting in and removing my books that I felt someones hand on my right shoulder. Out of pure instinct I grabbed it with my left hand, turned the attacker and pushed him/her against my locker. I removed my pocket knife out and held it to the neck of the boy in front of me. Only after I saw the horror in his eyes and the curious glances of those around me did I realise what I was doing.

I immediately let go of him and apologized, "S-s-sorry. I just recently saw 'Scream' and have been terribly scared of people creeping up behind me since. I've learnt a few self defense techniques and guess my sub conscious was just aching to try them." Oh My God, that was the lamest lie I have ever made. I just hope he buys it.

It took him a while to recover so I tried to study him in that time period.
He was around my height and looked my age. He had dark brown eyes and similar coloured hair. His messy hair gave off the the bad boy impression but after seeing the books he dropped after I tackled him my impression of him turned to a nerd immediately.

"Uhm... Yeah it's cool. I guess it's my fault. I shouldn't have scared you like that. I am Noah by the way. And you, are freakishly strong. "
I laughed. "Yeah I go to the gym twice a week, oh and my name is Katherine."
"I know. I've heard about you. But about the gym thing... I don't think that explains why do you carry a murder weapon with you."
"It's just for self defense. My mom can get really protective. It's one of the reasons why she forced me to learn how to protect myself. I guess it's just typical parental anxiety. "

" Yeah I understand. I guess ", he muttered the last part really softly but I caught onto it. "Anyways", he continued, " you must be wondering why I am here in the first place. My locker is actually right next to yours. I just saw you from the back and wondered who you are. Curiosity got the best of me and here I am, almost killed by the new girl." He laughed and said.

I felt guilty for scaring him like that. I know I can be intimidating sometimes and Noah seems really sweet. "I'm really sorry. Truly. I didn't mean it. "
I apologised many times during our conversation and he repeatedly told me it was alright. Noah was in the same grade as Britt, Chase and I and coincidentally, both of us had calculus first period. We walked to the class together, talking about random things. He even sat next to me during the lecture and saved me from dying out of boredom from the terror of a subject called calculus. The period got over and we decided to sit with each other at lunch.

The rest of the day was the usual. Mom calling me every hour to check whether I'm still alive or not, boring lectures and a whole lot of homework. Finally it was lunch and the thought of food got my spirits high.

I entered the overly crowded canteen, grabbed my food and searched for a familiar set of dark brown eyes. Noah waved to me and I walked straight at his table. He was sitting with a group of six people who were enjoying themselves. I hesitated at first, the introvert within me forcing me to run away from them but I thought otherwise. I had promised him that I'll sit with him for lunch and I didn't want to break it so I walked at his table.

"Guys this is Katherine, she's new so be nice. Katherine this is the gang. Thats Sam, Samantha, Kristine, and Derick."
I instantly forgot all the names but the ones that stuck were Sam and Samantha. Very clearly these two were twins but if I ever met their parents the first question I'd ask them is why give them such similar names. I found it weird but I kept my opinions to myself.

"So," I quietly asked Noah while he was drinking water, "do your friends know you are gay?"
He spit out the water he was drinking right onto Derick sitting opposite to him. The entire table erupted with laughter.
"Yuck! What the hell man!" Derick whined.
"Sorry Der, Katherine here just cracked a really funny joke. I could not stop myself," he answered nervously.

Derick muttered something and went to the washroom to get himself cleaned. While everyone resumed to their conversation Noah asked me, "How the bloody hell did you know?! Is it that obvious?! "
"Calm down Noah it isn't. I just am really good at observing and reading people and that's just one of the things I caught from you."
"Some talents you've got Katy, " he replied sarcastically.
"Well what can I say. It's really hard being me," I replied laughing.

After a while I felt an empty seat beside me move. Chase. He gave me a smirk and said, "Just because you didn't sit with us for lunch doesn't mean we can't."
"Katy! I was so hurt that you didn't sit with us." Britt backed her brother dramatically.
"I'm really sorry for hurting your feelings guys," I played along. " I just didn't know that I'm friends with two overly sensitive people."
Everyone at the table heard our conversation and laughed. Chase and Britt immediately got comfortable with the group and interesting conversations started.

I looked at the table of people I had become instant friends with and smiled to myself. So much for wanting only two friends.
