it was just a normal day for kenny, february fourteen. the man didn't even realize it was the day of love since he had never really made a big deal out of it. after all, he had no reason to. it's not like he's ever been in a serious relationship before this one, and it's not like anyone has had the desire to be his valentine before.
of course, throughout the day in the past few years, he would see it. guys and girls alike asking their crushes out on dates, or asking them to be their valentine, and sure, maybe he wanted that, but at this point, he has already knocked it into his head enough that he recognizes that it's not gonna be him, and it's never gonna be him. it's been drilled into his brain so much that he doesn't even realize that he has a girlfriend now, and one that's pretty in love with him and someone who'd jump at the chance to be his valentine, so nothing really registered in his brain when he started his walk to school.
as always, the institution had a certain vibe to it. it always did during special days and today was exactly that -- to other people, kenny didn't care for it. at least that's what he told himself every year because deep down, he did want what these people had. just like any other person, he wanted to be asked out and feel special. he wanted to feel loved and wanted and yeah, he may not be the most socially adept person in the world, he may suck at approaching people and socializing in general, he often didn't want to be at the center of attention, but having someone show a grand display of affection during this day and this day only couldn't hurt. it definitely wouldn't hurt his ego, that's for sure. it didn't matter he was with arabella now, it was still scarred and bruised from that time arin accidentally exposed him at cafeteria.
he sat on a little metal hut in front of the school, it was painted their school's color and was often the meeting place for their friendship group. sometimes it was just him and arin, and sometimes their significant others would join them. there are even days - although they are rare - where acquaintances from the clubs they're in joined them too. it depended on the day.
he was the first one there, one of the first ones to get to the school too. usually around this time, there would already be a number of students running around and being loud, or being teenagers in general. the fact that it wasn't like that today made kenny's stomach churn in an uncomfortable way, though there was a logical explanation for the way things currently were. it didn't matter. anxiety often didn't listen to logic and that's the part kenny finds the most annoying part of it.
the next ones to arrive was arin and unsurprisingly, he had his girlfriend on his arm, a big, fluffy, brown teddy bear in her arms. it had a pair of small ears, a single plastic rose on its right paw, and a bar of chocolate on the left. finally, on its tummy was a dark red heart with glittery gold colored writing. it was in cursive and too small for kenny to read -- not that he wanted to, anyway. it was none of his business.
"hey man!" arin greeted the blond with their secret handshake, making the girl next to his friend laugh a bit at the dorkiness of it all. kenny gave claire a nod as acknowledgement which she returned with a smile, standing behind her boyfriend.
they sat back down where kenny was before when arin grinned at him. "so what'd you get your arabella for valentine's day?"
your arabella. he hated how his best friend picked up on that, sometimes he wished arin would stop being so observant. or at least stop teasing him about everything he notices. arabella uttered it a few times now and kenny loved how it sounded coming off of her plump, glossy lips every time. to him, it was like a siren's call, but it was also something she'd say whenever he got jealous. she'd wrap her arms around his neck, standing on her tippy toes and lightly brush her vanilla-flavored lip gloss covered lips over his -- just enough to leave him wanting more. not that it mattered, he always found himself desiring her more and more as the days go by - "i'm your arabella, aren't i? not jack's. yours."
he was snapped out of his thoughts when arin peered around him weirdly. his neck twisted and stretched to scan kenny's figure in an unnatural way. "what'd you get arabella for valentine's day?" he asked again and kenny felt his face drain of every ounce of color. oh god. his face fell to his awaiting hands. oh god.
"no.. you didn't..."
he felt nauseous. felt the food he ate for breakfast creeping up his throat.
"kenny.." the disbelief could be heard in his friend's voice.
"what am i gonna do?" there was no longer a need for a yes or no answer. his silence sufficed, as well as the desperation in his tone as he forced those five words out without throwing up.
his head was spinning and he felt lightheaded. he could not form a single coherent thought if he tried, something he doing. keyword: trying. this was their first valentine's day together, how could he brush off such a special occasion? because he wasn't one of those guys who wanted to please their girlfriends just so they wouldn't bother them, he actually cared about arabella and how she felt. her pleasure was his, and his pleasure was hers. it was honestly quite creepy how they were in the same wavelength. but that's how rheir relationship worked.
the first valentine's day where i actually have a valentine and i screw it up. great.
"i spotted some stuffed toys and chocolate at the stores in front of the school." it was rare that claire spoke in the same room as kenny. she was just as shy as him, if not shyer. she was always seated at the back of the classroom listening intently to whatever the teacher was discussing and usually can be found at the school library. maybe arin attracted shy people for some reason?
"i don't know what arabella's into but.." she spoke so softly kenny wasn't even sure if she was actually the person who said that or if he was starting to hear voices in his head.
"no, no, that's perfect. thank you." he stood up, giving her an appreciative smile, then beginning to walk away. from behind him, he heard arin say "don't pass out!", a twinge of amusement in his voice.
he didn't get very far. he was still in the couple's field of vision while he just appeared in arabella's. arabella who looked as radiant as ever, dressed in a white, lace, sleeveless crop top, a silk red skirt - kenny recognized it as the red slip dress she wore when they has a double date with arin and claire. her top was just over it. - and white, heeled thigh high boots. her hair was done the way it usually was, straight and curled by the end, but today, she had two cute, red, glittery barrettes holding her hair in place at the front.
that wasn't the reason why kenny's mouth went dry, no. it was because of the bouquet of blue, lilac, and white flowers in her arms. it was not small whatsoever, ranging from medium to big and the flowers were all vibrant and fresh-looking. it looked expensive. all tied together with a white lace ribbon. he knew there were plenty of guys in the school who liked his girlfriend, but sheesh.
this looks like a lot to spend on someone who isn't even yours.
he got lost in his thoughts again and when he blinked, all of a sudden, arabella was right in front of him, fluttering her eyelashes at him -- as if she even needed to do that. he was already wrapped around her thin, nimble finger.
she gently pushed the bouquet on his chest and kenny's arms instinctively reached out to hold it when arabella reached up and placed a small kiss on his lips. as always, her lips tasted like vanilla. "happy valentine's day, kenny."
his thoughts were scrambled and he couldn't think straight if he tried. he found her presence to be intoxicating. the way she looked, the way she gazed at him, her crystal blue eyes melting onto his, the way she felt this near to him, so warm and inviting, but it wasn't just that. his attraction to her wasn't merely physical. whenever he sees her, he remembers all the memories they had together, the happy moments were the ones that stood out the most, then there are the comforting ones which he held near and dear to his heart, and there are also less age appropriate ones which never fail to send a shiver down his spine. regardless, all of them make his face burn and blush creep on his cheeks.
he barely managed to greet her back, swallowing as she stepped away from him. one single step. fuck.
he was sure she was gonna be upset. it didn't have anything to do with the fact she was popular. no one wants a partner who doesn't give them a gift during the day of love. this was the day he was supposed to spoil her damnit.
"do you like it?" her head tilted to the side, eyes scanning his figure. "it brings out your eyes, like i hoped it would."
he didn't care if he seemed dumb. he had no idea what was going on. he blinked once, twice, "what?"
"the flowers," she beamed up at him. "i got them for you, do you like it?"
he couldn't help the small oh that left his mouth. he initially thought that someone gave it to her as a gift and her handing it to him was her asking him to hold it for her for a second. "oh."
"do you not like it?"
"no, no, no! you got it wrong." he swore he heard arin chuckle from behind him and he fought the annoyed sound that bubbled in his chest. "i thought you wanted me to hold it for you or something." he laughed at himself. "i love it, 'bella. 't's pretty, just like you." he got closer to her and wrapped an arm around her, pulling her close and pressing a kiss on the top of her head.
he never thought he would find himself in this situation, prettiest person in school giving him flowers for such a romantic occasion. he wondered what he did to be so deserving of arabella's love and affection, only to come up empty handed. he had no idea what it was, but he's glad. he couldn't have asked for a better partner than her.
"shit." he remembered. "i'm so sorry, baby. i forgot to buy something for you." he buries his face in her hair to hide his crestfallen expression, inhaling the scent of the vanilla shampoo she used -- he always meant to ask her what brand it was, it smelled heavenly and he often debating buying it for himself. he truly felt bad for it. he still wasn't used to the whole having a girlfriend thing.
to his intense surprise, she giggled, moving her head up so his no longer rested on her hair and instead, her forehead would be against his. "that's okay, ken. 's no big deal." she mumbled. "you don't have to stress out so much about it."
"you might have to tell him that a million more times. he's been worrying since we got here." arin's booming laughter was right beside the blond pair.
kenny's eyes momentarily shifted away from the girl in front of him - though their foreheads were remained against each other's - to the boy he called his best friend. the man was literally hunched over snickering at his expense making kenny roll his eyes and arabella hum lightly. "well, if you cared that much, how about you make it up to me after school?" she fluttered her eyelashes at him -- as if she needed to do that. they always hung out after school, even when the had meetings for their respective clubs. usually, they'd wait for each other, then walk home together.
".. 'bella what did i tell you about flirting with me like that?"
