the one hour and forty five minute car ride flew by and you didn't know whether it was because the person you're driving with volunteered to shoulder it all by himself or because it was kenny you were driving with.
his presence always seemed to calm you down, it was like magic. whenever you were going to have a big match and had the jitters, simply having him in a room with you and holding his hand, his thumb rubbing circles on the back of yours made you feel a whole lot better. he was warm and comforting and safe. even without uttering a single word, he was able to make you feel like this. it was just a kenny thing.
another thing about the canadian was that he had a child-like spirit and kept you on your toes. everyday was exciting and a whole new adventure with him and this is the reason why you were headed to your destination in the first place.
you, kenny, and the bucks were just having a chat, as per usual with the good brothers and don across the locker room, talking about another topic amongst themselves. while the four of you were talking about something of actual importance at first, just like any other conversation with friends, it drifted away from that and soon turned to telling each other some embarrassing moments. it was currently matt's turn.
he told a story about how once on a date, he took a girl to an outdoor paintball place. at first, though he make it seem like fun, it was fairly normal. they ran around the area trying to shoot each other - or other people - with their paintball guns but then, some rowdy teenager from outside threw something over the chain-link fence that was nasty smelling at him and it hit him smack-dab in the middle of his chest. it would have been no problem if he had an extra shirt, but sadly, he forgot to bring one.
after the game was done, the girl asked him about it and he just tried to tell her that it was a regular paintball splatter when - based from smell alone - it was clearly not. she never replied to his texts after that.
it was then that you told them that you have never played paintball in your life. kenny, looking like you had just confessed to murdering his precious kitty, dobby, stood up and turned to you, jabbing a finger in your direction which caught the good brothers' and don's attention as well. you felt your face burn. "i'm taking you out to play paintball the next day i'm completely free."
and that day was today.
of course though, it would be no fun to play paintball with just the two of you and a bunch of strangers, so you guys also invited the bucks to come play. "this is my paintball redemption!" matt cheered down the line when you called him about it, then after that, he pleaded that you guys don't go to the place where the Unidentified Flying Smelly Object incident - otherwise known as the failed date - happened. you laughed before reassuring him. instead kenny opted for an indoor one that was themed around space and rented it out so it was only gonna be you, kenny, matt, and nick for a few hours there.
when the both of you arrived, the bucks' car was just on your tail and the four of you entered the establishment all together. your boyfriend definitely made a great choice choosing this place. it looked incredible, straight out of your dreams. the whole building was lit with dark blue lights, with green, red, and purple dots throughout the ceiling along with speckles of white. there was also little spaceships and aliens painted on the walls, as well as hanging from above. in addition to that, there was rocketships and ufo's that you could climb into so you could shoot at a distance, a different angle. much like kenny himself, it made you feel like a child all over again.
you guys agreed that instead of doing a free-for-all, you were going to play in pairs first so you could warm up. the first round was you and nick against kenny and matt. then after that, the free-for-all round was going to commence.
once you were all ready, loaded with the paintball guns, spare paintballs, and protective gear, you all ran into the actual play zone. the employee set a timer for thirty seconds wherein you could all run around and find a spot, then after that, the game would actually begin.
the strategy you and nick went with was that you were going to head to the obvious route, the big, tall, red rocket in the middle of the room, while he would, at first, hide in the corner, then later sneak up from behind them.
thankfully, you had the speed advantage against all three of them and were able to climb up before anyone else can and as soon as you were up there, nick couldn't be found. however, you did keep a close eye on kenny and matt. as the timer went off, you knew approximately where they were and you kept your head low as you spied on them so they won't hit you if they shot at you.
it was fairly quiet and very nerveracking, with only the faint funky music playing in the background. kenny and matt almost paid you no mind, surveying the area before aiming at the rocket you were in, only for them to not shoot. foolishly, they were facing the same direction and nick was able to get a hit at matt's back before kenny ninja-rolled out of the way. your partner shot at your boyfriend but he missed, the blond leaping to his feet and running to a blue and light purple ufo across the room.
you dashed down the rocket and was beside the younger jackson brother. he put a finger to his lips before he spoke. "i'm gonna try and ambush him, okay? you hide over here, and if he jumps down, shoot him." he said pointing to a little cave-ish spot in the wall beside the ufo kenny just entered. you simply nodded at him before crawling there, watching nick go through the entrance your boyfriend previously went through.
like nick predicted, kenny jumped from the balcony, landing on his feet but he didn't get the chance to run away, though, since you shot him from below immediately. he adorably let out a little "hey!" before leaning down and seeing you, on your stomach, grinning at him and waving innocently. "hey kenneth!"
you crawled from the little space and booped him, kenny's face scrunching up as a result. "we win!"
you and nick shared an embrace, arms slung over each other's shoulders as you walked over to the starting point so the next round - the free-for-all - could begin.
"just know i was taking it easy on you, [y/n]. this next game won't be your first time anymore and i will clean. you. up!" kenny delivered using his promo voice before he leaned back and did a villain laugh. you fought the urge to hug him and peck his lips. this man was too cute for his own good.
"sure thing, ken. i'm real intimidated" you giggled at him, shaking your head. "i am offended though, how dare you use a recycled promo on me?" you pouted up at him, hanging on to his arm.
someone then - you weren't sure if it was matt or nick - cleared their throat. "alright you love birds, it's time to get paintball-ed up!"
from the reply to that statement, you could tell that it was in fact matt that uttered those as nick responded "no man, you're the one getting paintball-ed up cause i am going to win."
you rolled your eyes at the brothers before nodding at the employee so you could get started along with the timer and you all dispersed.
unlike with the last round, you didn't go to the center rocket. it would be too predictable and frankly, too easy. you wanted a challenge, so instead you climbed up a ladder at the right side of the building which led you to an average sized wooden platform. it was open for the most part, with no railings but one fourth of it had a little wooden shed with simple green aliens painted on to it. there, you waited for the alarm to go off and shoot a paintball at one - or three, if you could - of your friends.
after a while of missed fires, it was matt that got a tad bit too close. not close enough for the paintball you just shot to hit, but close enough for you decide to jump down and chase after him. you carelessly ran after him, sliding on top of the medium sized aliens and rockets and jumping over every and any obstacle that came between you and the brown-haired jackson brother.
you were completely and utterly focused on him when all of a sudden you heard "[y/n]!" you barely had time to register it though, before kenny wrapped his arms around you, craddling you to his chest and shielding you from nick's paintball with his body. the red ball exploded and dramatically splattered all over kenny's back. feeling grateful, you leaned up and pressed a quick kiss to his cheek, muttering a "thank you!" before hoping that you win this game in his honor.
spoiler alert: you did.
