you bleakly looked out of the window, not being used to the sight that stares back at you. there was absolutely no one on the sidewalk, just one or two people passing by every now and then. in the past years where you and matt had taken the next step and moved in with each other, the sidewalk was usually littered with people from all walks of life, and you thoroughly enjoyed people watching.

sometimes there would be a family of four walking hand-in-hand with their children eating ice cream happily, spotting a gay couple would make you smile knowing that the world was - somewhat - a better, safer place, there was also a woman you would see everyday, she jogged and your house was in her usual route. now there was none of that.

of course, you knew that this was for the best. the pandemic is no joke and people had to stay at home in order to keep themselves - as well as the people around them - safe, so you were happy that your neighborhood understood that and followed quarantine protocols, but still, there was a part of you that yearned for the normalcy of seeing people walking around outside. now it seems like hesperia, california is nothing but a ghost town.

a silver lining though, is that matt is home more often. people are heavily discouraged to go outside and have mass gatherings which means that aew isn't allowed to tour and all their events is going to be held in jacksonville, florida at daily's place.

today is one of those days that your husband is home and you're thankful. the both of you are celebrating your third wedding anniversary today and he'd already missed enough of those because of his wrestling related travels, so it was nice to have him for this special day all to yourself.

usually when he was able to make it, you guys would go out to a fancy restaurant, even during your anniversaries before you got married. "a little fancy dinner never hurt anyone." matt would wink at you before leaving you in your shared bedroom so you could get ready. clearly, that wasn't the case for this year and matt, ever the gentleman, told you that today was the year he was going to make it up for all the anniversaries he's missed in the past, before ordering you to go upstairs - "and no peeking!" - while he got downstairs ready.

he also told you to put on a suit or a dress to set the mood, but nothing too extravagant. he wanted you to be comfortable.

you were cut off from your thoughts by your husband coming up the stairs though. matt passed by you as you leaned on the wall, staring at the hallway window.

he lowly whistled as he took in your figure, his eyes scanning you up and down. "looking good, [y/n],"

he caught you off guard, though, making you jump in surprise. "jesus, matt. you scared me" you lightly scolded him but he just laughed at you before his well-built arms snaked around you waist and hugged you.

"sorry, baby. you do look really good though." he pulled away kissing your cheek. "just wait a sec, alright. gonna get into a suit of my own." he flashed you a quick grin before walking to your bedroom.

in just a few minutes, he was already out of the room and smiling at you. matt looked absolutely dashing and you couldn't help but lick your lips at the sight. he just wore a basic black suit jacket with a white button down and matching black tie and dress pants but he made it look expensive and classy. the way his jacket wrapped around those biceps he worked so hard on like a vice grip didn't help either, and neither did the long hair that you loved so much. it was secured in a bun on the base of his neck.

once he reached you, he held his arm out for you grab. "shall we?" without thinking twice, you looped your arm around his, holding on to his bicep, and the two of you descended down the stairs and into the dining room.

the smile you had on grew humongously as you took in the sight in front of you. you really were lucky to have matt.

it was dimmed perfectly, with little candles scattered around the room. there was also a single scented candle in corner, making the scent of roses, sugar, and lavender waft all around you. the table was covered in a pristine white tablecloth made of silk and it was pleated perfectly. on top of it was some white lace, just a shade lighter as well as some rose petals.

moisture - which you quickly and carefully wiped away - began to gather in the corner of your eyes as your heart clenched. he clearly put so much effort into this and you loved him dearly for it.

"hey, no, don't cry." matt softly said as he wiped away your tears. "i love it matt, thank you. it's perfect." he chuckled at that and shook his head. "not nearly as perfect a partner as you are, [y/n]. thank you so much for being so understanding and patient with me, for staying with me through the good and the bad." he smiled at you, his pretty brown eyes staring into yours and you could sense the raw sincerity in his voice.

"always, matt." you whispered, leaning forward to peck his lips.

after that, while romantic music played in the background, you guys got settled in and had your dinner - complete with dessert - which he cooked. you wondered why he didn't cook more, he was simply magnificent at it.

the meal has been long finished and the both of you were just talking now, too engrossed in your conversation to get changed and move into the bedroom. you were slightly leaning forward on the table with your chin in your hand when the music in the background changed.

it was your song and the both of you couldn't help but smile, eyes shining with delight.

"may i have this dance, mr/mrs. jackson?" you stood up, your hand in his and you guys moved into the living room where there was more space.

your arms looped around his neck, and his arms around your waist as you swayed to the rhythm. your head found a home on his chest - or his head on your chest, if you're taller -, listening to his heartbeat as the melody continued to play, matt softly singing the song in your ear.

you guys wished you could stay in that moment forever.
