Chapter 1

Nobody has your back like drunk bitches in a bathroom. At least that's what I told a sobbing girl I'd know for all of thirty seconds as she explained how the creep at the bar had tried to touch her.

I felt the familiar tingle of my temper rising in me as she shakily described how he had used his body to pin her against the bar when she said she didn't want to dance with him.

My fingers curled into a fist, and I took a step towards the door. "Gem!" I caught Tori's concerned tone as her hand brushed my shoulder.

I sent an overly innocent smile back at her. She stood with a comforting arm around the sobbing girl, "I'm just going to talk to him." I said sweetly.

"Gemma Arabella Fox, I swear to god if you get us chucked out of another bar I'm going to kick your ass." She warned.

I grinned. My best friend knew me too well.

"Come on babe, just a kiss," I hear the loud words along with the rest of the bar as soon as I slip back out into the main area.

The people playing pool don't even look up and those seated around them turn their heads away.

He's stood at the corner of the bar, tucked by the entrance to the staff area, and has a girl's wrist locked in his meaty grip, yanking her towards him. She's resisting, but he's definitely stronger, causing her to stumble forward. Her hand presses against his chest to stop the fall and hold a distance between them.

I can't hear her response from here, but whatever it is, the guys behind my target are laughing.

I glance to the door and see the two bouncers trying to wrestle a burly guy out. With no one else apparently willing to stand up to the man I square my shoulders and march over, my fury building with every step as I watch people ignore the girl's struggles.

As I get nearer, I see the image on a skull wearing a helmet on his jacket. Exactly as the girl in the bathroom had described, somehow I had just known it was him. A smaller patch with his name embroidered on it reads  "Brick."

Should say thick if you ask me and I snort at my own joke. I'm on them now, close enough to see the fear in her eyes and smell the alcohol on his breath.

My hand slams down on the bar between them. "Everything OK here?"

The man's nostrils flare in anger and shock. "Fuck do you think you're doing?" He growls.

"Me?" I asked breezily, "Just checking if my friend is interested in talking to you."

I look the girl in the eye, and she shakes her head vehemently.

"You don't know who you're dealing with, girl." He releases the girl's wrist to stab me in the chest with a fat finger.

I feel the girl scoot back away behind me but I know better than to turn my back on him now I've redirected his attention. The guys with him are laughing nervously now and trying to act like they don't know him.

"Maybe not, but I've known enough guys like you to know that a big attitude like that is compensating for a tiny..." I trail off and flick my eyes down pointedly.

I've clearly struck a nerve because his face reddens with anger and embarrassment. "You fucking bitch! You have any idea what this means?" He beats a fist against the patch on his chest reading Satan's Sons.

"That you ride two wheels?" I shrug, fighting to keep my expression disinterested as the tension builds.

"You have any idea what I had to do to earn this?"

His voice is softer now, and I feel my hands curl into fists in preparation.

"No, but seeing as all of you are wearing them," I flick my head at the guys over his shoulder, "Doesn't seem that special. Biker equivalent of a school uniform?"

I realise my mistake as soon as the other men suddenly turn on me, anger written over their faces. Got it, don't disrespect the biker's pretty boy scout patches.

I fight the urge to step back, straightening up instead. "Oh, I'm going to have fun with you." He grunts, adjusting himself as he steps towards me.

His hand grabs my wrist and I grin as I twist my hand towards the weakest part of his grip, slipping free.

"You're right, this is fun." I giggle, pushing him hard in the chest.

He's built like a house and barely moves. "Fucking bitch." He hisses, raising his fist.

Before he can do anything or I can make him regret it, a body steps between us. "The bar has a zero tolerance policy on violence. Both of you are out." The bouncer orders.

I roll my eyes, "I didn't even do anything."

"I watched you shove him." The bouncer snorts in amusement.

"Bitch needs teaching how to respect the patch." Brick hisses, lunging for me again.

I laugh as the bouncer blocks him. "Don't make this worse for yourself." He warns as he pins Brick's arms behind his back and starts pushing him towards the door, "Stay here until I come back to talk to you." He adds over his shoulder to me.

"Bye bye Thick." I laugh with a little finger wave.

He tries to say something else but is hauled away before he can. "You need to learn to pick your battles better, girly. You messed with the wrong guy." One of the men says before they follow him towards the exit.

I let out a breath as I lean back against the bar. "Thank you." The girl I had just saved hovers awkwardly a few paces away.

"No worries, just doing what anyone should." I reply with a pointed look at the silent spectators, who immediately try to pretend they weren't watching it all unfold.

"He's a bad guy. You really should be careful." She ducks her head, biting her lip as though she wants to say something else before shaking her head and darting away.

I glance at the exit where the bouncer vanished and shrug before striding back towards the bathroom.

"All sorted." I sing out as I fling the door open.

Tori's face drops as she spots me. "Are we kicked out?"

"No-" I reply at the same time as a voice behind me says, "Yes."

"Well, you're not, but your friend is." The bouncer behind me reassures her.

Tori sighs dramatically, "We are a package deal, Mister." She gives the girl one last squeeze and I realise I still don't know her name.

She is looking a lot better now than she did when she first came in and I give a satisfied nod before turning to face the bouncer with a winning smile. "Are you sure I can't persuade you to let us stay?"

A ghost of a smile hovers on his lips. "It's bar policy. You can still come back in the future, but you're done for the night."

I groan but shoot him a smile to let him know there are no hard feelings. "Come on Gem." Tori's arm slips into mine and we head for the door, bouncer close behind us.

It's cool out, cooler than a July evening has any right to be, and I instantly regret forgoing my jacket.

"We've sent them on their way, so you should be fine." The bouncer reassures, but his eyes still scan the surroundings. "Are you heading home or somewhere else?"

"Home I think." I look at Tori for confirmation, and she nods, already checking Uber.

I get my phone out to do the same and we both place our requests. Usually we would share a cab, but recently Tori moved in with her boyfriend of just over a year, and now we are in opposite directions.

"Six minutes." I say when mine goes through.

"Mine says three, I guess we will see how accurate it is." She laughs, pulling me away from the bar entrance so we are standing under a street lamp on the curb.

Tori has been my best friend for as long as I can remember and I find it amazing that we are still so close years later.

"What are you thinking about?" She asks, glancing at me before returning her eyes to the road for her Uber.

"Just how lucky I am to have you, Titch." I laugh and ruffle her hair.

She ducks away with a noise of complaint and opens her mouth to reply but is interrupted by the arrival of her car pulling up to the curb.

She quickly checks the number plate on her phone to confirm before nodding and reaching for the door. "You want me to wait with you for yours?"

"Nah, get home. Mine will only be a couple of minutes. Message me when you're home safe?"

"Of course, you message me too!" She climbs into the back seat and closes the door behind her.

I wave as it starts to pull away, following it to the corner of the road and blowing kisses. I can see her cracking up as it disappears out of sight.

A quick glance at my phone confirms my Uber is now two minutes away, and I turn to make my way back to the spot just outside the bar.

"And to think I was expecting to have to follow you home." A voice snarls from the shadows behind me.
