"...then you push your hands forward like this."

I stood behind Maddie with my arms over hers and guided the ball forward as she threw it.

It rolled round the rim of the hoop and finally fell into the basket.

"Awesome!" I cheered as the ball landed on the ground and bounced away.
I grinned at her as she picked another ball up from a bag and walked over to me.

"Trev, you know you were the one who took that shot right?" she said as she bounced the ball she was holding.

I rolled my eyes.
"Who threw the ball?"

"Me, I agree. But it would've probably gone backwards if I was the one aiming."

That made us both laugh.

"You're funny you know that?" I asked and stood in front of her.

"Wow, a whole Trevor is saying that?" she mocked as I took the ball she held and threw it with one hand, aiming for the net that was behind me.

The ball went in with a single swish and fell to the ground.
My eyes were still glued to hers as it rolled towards us.

"Show off!" I heard someone say from behind me.
I whipped around to see Alexis picking up a ball from the bag.

"Hey," I called as he stepped back and made his own shot.
It went in after rolling on the rim for a few seconds.

Maddie tried in vain to stifle a titter and Alexis turned to face her.

"What's so funny?" he asked.

Maddie's face became instantly serious.
"Nothing."

"Ooh, because you have a boyfriend who's a basketball superstar huh?"

"I didn't-"

"Save it. Trevor we need to talk. Basketball stuff," Alexis snapped.

What's that all about?

"Alexis, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you mad," Maddie apologized in a quiet voice, "but Trevor and I are busy right now."

Alexis scoffed.
"Of course, you're always both busy with each other. Look, I just need to talk to him right now. It's important. You can go on with your honeymoon later."

"What's your problem? I'm tryna apologize and you're not even trying to reason with me. It's not my fault that you're so lonely and don't have any friends," Maddie said.

"Maddie..." I called and stared at her incredulously.

"Look, pretty face," Alexis started as his face darkened, "it's my choice if I want to have friends or not. It's none of your business so just stay out of my life and be happy with the fact that at least someone managed to like you."

"Hey!" I yelled at him as Maddie glared at Alexis.
She started to walk away.
I rushed over to her and grabbed her wrist.

"Dude, that wasn't nice!" I said as Maddie struggled to break free from my grip.

"Let me go!" she whined.

"What she said wasn't nice!" Alexis retorted.
Maddie successfully freed herself and began to walk away.
I chased after her but she paused and looked back at me.

"Trev, I'm fine. Please don't follow me," she whispered and stormed off.

I glared at Alexis who stood there, satisfied with himself.

"What's wrong with you? Why would you say that?" I demanded.

"Why are you acting like she didn't do anything wrong?"

"Does it matter? If she started it, why did you have to continue? Can't you be the reasonable person for once?"

"Oh okay, that's fine," he chuckled, "I'm glad you know your girlfriend isn't reasonable."

Smoke was beginning to rise from my hands and spread around me.
Alexis took a step back.

"Do you have to be so... so cocky all the time?!"

"Call me whatever you want. I'm just being honest," he stated, staring me straight in the eye.

That's when my hands burst into flames.

"Woah! Trev calm down," Alexis pleaded as he took more steps backwards.

My insides felt like lava flowed through my blood stream. My entire skin reddened and the ground were I stepped had burn marks on it.

Maddie's hurt face flashed in my mind.
I flung a fireball at him.

He quickly ducked and it landed behind him, making the ground sizzle.

I followed him slowly until I had him backed up against the wall. There was no space for him to move and I was so close to him that his body began to burn.

He raised a fist to punch me but I caught it with my hand and he withdrew it quickly, clutching the burnt hand.
"Ah, shit!" he swore.

I raised my hand to throw another fireball.
"I'm sorry!" he yelled, gritting his teeth in pain and sheilding his face with an arm.

I paused and lowered my hands slowly as my body temperature reduced.

"Just go," I spat and he slipped away from the space between me and the wall.
He walked out of the house after giving me one more cold glare.

When he left, I was still standing there, my chest heaving.
I looked down at my hands and stared at it for a long time.

What the hell just happened?

***

"Hey Tanya, have you seen mom?" I asked as she walked into the kitchen.

"No, why'd you ask? If it's because of dinner, I left some spaghetti for you in the fridge."

I choked on the water I was drinking and began to cough.

She rushed over to me.
"You okay?"
I held out my hand to stop her.
"I'm fine." After a moment, I calmed down and sighed.

Then I looked back at her.
"You made dinner again?!"

She pursed her lips and smacked my head.
"Ow!" I complained and took a step back from her.

"Really? You know, I should've let you die!"

"Jesus Christ Tanya, calm down." I chuckled. "Besides, you didn't do anything to help me."

She rolled her eyes. "You ate the dinner I made yesterday, so why are you acting like some idiot now?"

"Who said I did?"
She scrunched up her brows.
"You didn't?"

I chuckled and walked over to the fridge.
"I want to live to save Bru, Tanya."

I got out a bottle of soda and walked out of the kitchen, leaving her speechless.

*****

It was really late in the night when I walked out into the basketball court at the back.
I sat on the bench that stood next to the wall and stared off into space.

The weather was nippy but I only donned a sleeveless Tee. I could keep myself warm with my fire.

My mind drifted off to earlier this evening when I almost fought with Alexis.
I didn't want to fight with the guy but he was being really annoying. Lately, anytime he saw Maddie and me together, he'd either walk away or look for ways to take me away.

It was like seeing us together made him mad. But why? Did he like Maddie?
Nah, impossible with the way he spoke to her today. But then what was his problem?

It was when I dug my phone out of my pocket and saw that it was already past midnight that I began to worry.
My mum had never stayed this late at work.
Every time she stayed past ten, she'd call to tell us the reason she wasn't back yet.

I called her trice and she didn't pick up. I told myself not to panic and waved off any horrible thought that came to my mind.

For once the idea of running away from the mortal world seemed so appealing to me.
I was tired of feeling so many emotions in a short period of time. Dealing with humans was frustrating.

I've always been the nice and funny guy. People took me for granted because of it and I was bullied when I was younger. As I grew, it stopped but even if it didn't, it wouldn't have changed me from being me. I liked being me.

Though, I've never been hostile or agressive like that before. I think I was being controlled by my fire spirit. I was mad, yes. But the influence of the spirit stoked the anger and just made me look like some monster. If I wasn't careful and got really mad one day to the point that I was helpless, the spirit of fire might actually take over me.

I shook my head to get rid of my thoughts.
I wanted to go to Horei.

I stood up and tapped my wrist where my black arm band was wrapped.

***

One thing I noticed between the kingdoms was that the time was always the same but it moved faster in any other kingdom besides ankor.

I strolled in the darkness through a forest in Horei. The atmosphere was strangely quiet but calming. Just what I needed.
A sweet foreign scent wafted through the air and as soon as I inhaled it, my muscles relaxed.

I shut my eyes and breathed out. When I opened them back up, a glowing, flying creature buzzed past me and flew to a height far in front of me.

I followed the trail of light and it finally disappeared into the clouds.

Far off ahead, the glint of a metal pole caught my eye. A flag billowed in the distance as a strong, cold wind flew past.
I was able to make out the flag's design.
It was golden all through except in the middle where a green heart was placed around a gold cross.

I noticed that the flag was hung at half mast.
I nodded in understanding.

Horei was not alright without their prince. The kingdom was at distress.
