•Chapter 24•
°Maddie°
"Hi! Steph!" I said as a girl passed my locker.
She waved and smiled back then walked on further.
As I rummaged through my locker for my English textbook, I thought of the training we had the day before.
We looked so cool, transforming into the suits and holding those weapons.
Especially Trevor. He looked so hot in red, with the red glowing staff he held that resembled a trident.
He looked devilish, which was unlike him.
Speaking of Trevor, I met him walking along along the hallway as I was heading to English class.
"Hey, Trev," I said to him.
He was in front of me and he whirled around.
His face lit up suddenly and he smiled at me.
"Hey, Maddie." He slowed his pace so I could catch up with him.
We walked in silence for a few seconds before he spoke up.
"So, how have you been...coping with the whole spirit of Reina thing?"
That was all we could think about these past few days. I was getting tired of it.
I was about to reply when I suddenly remembered the argument we had in the training room.
"Yeah, I'm still getting used to it." I answered finally. "Oh...and Trevor I'm sorry for the way I acted when we were in the training room."
He looked down and examined the floor.
"Mmm...it's okay. I was goofing off a bit."
"You goof off all the time Trevor. You're really funny."
"Really?" he said, his eyes widening in feigned surprise.
I giggled. "You're such a clown."
"Yeah...I was born and found myself like that."
I tried my best to keep a straight face
"Hey...we're already late to class." I looked sideways and noticed that the hallway was empty.
"Nerd," Trevor said smirking.
"Hey!" I said punching him on the arm slightly. "It's not a crime to be a punctual student."
He nodded.
"And it's also not a crime to be a Trevor."
"Huh?" I asked.
"Exactly. See you after school?"
"We're going to the same class."
"Yeah, but we can still talk after school right?"
"Um, sure. Where?"
"The usual."
"Which is?"
"I dunno any other usual Madz." Trevor chuckled lightly. "I meant Davie's."
"Oh...okay. I forgot you were new to the state."
"Yeah...see you." Then he winked at me before walking into class.
Did he just ask to go on a date?
No, stupid. I said to myself.
I dragged myself off the floor and walked to class trying to ignore the fluttering in my chest.
We had a short pop quiz during English. By the end of the class, the teacher already marked and graded our test.
I got a C.
I was always an average student and I wanted that to change.
I frowned at the paper as I walked out of the class.
The hallway was buzzing with students.
I walked past Trevor's locker and saw him talking to a blonde haired girl with green glasses.
They were both laughing and for some reason I felt mad.
He glanced at me and waved before turning back to the girl.
I waved back and walked past them to get to my locker.
I stuffed the paper in it and closed it with a little too much force.
***
I met Lucy after school.
"Hey Luce."
"Hey, Maddie. How was the English quiz?"
"Uh..."
"Yeah. Lets not talk about it."
"Agreed." I smiled at her.
"So, are you going anywhere today?" I asked.
"Nah. I'm just staying at home today. Gotta catch up with writing my poems, school stuff and being a spirit of Reina."
I laughed at that last part.
"Yeah. What do you think about the suits?"
"I think they're really cool. We all looked good in it. Though, Maddie I'm pretty scared about the things we're going to be doing later on. I hope you guys think about that too. We could actually fight real dangerous magicians and were not ready yet."
"I try not to think of that." I sighed.
"Anyway, I'll see you tomorrow."
I spread my arms for a hug but she balled her hand into a fist and gave me a fist bump.
***
Four pm after school, I was sitting at a table in Davie's.
My eyes were on my phone until I heard the bell on the door chime.
I looked up.
Lucy walked in.
She paused in her tracks on seeing me.
"Hey Luce."
"Heyyy."
"I thought you were staying at home today."
"Yeah...I lied. Actually I was going somewhere with Carl."
"The bartender?"
"Yeah. I came here to close the bar up for today."
"Oh...okay. Can I stay here for a while?"
"Why?"
"I was supposed to meet someone here."
"Who?"
"Trevor."
She cocked a brow and the corner of her lips pulled up in a smirk.
"Okay. Here's the spare key. When you're done, lock the door and gimme the key tomorrow."
She fished the key out of her pocket and threw it to me.
The she flipped the CLOSED/OPEN open sign on the door so it read 'closed' from outside and left.
I sat there for a while 'til I saw a guy outside the door. He stood in front for a while and turned around to leave.
I stood up in a flash and ran over to the door.
I pushed it open.
"Heyyy!" I called out as he was about leaving.
He turned around.
"Maddie? I thought this place was closed." He said referring to the closed sign behind the glass door.
I explained the whole Lucy situation to him.
"Okay," he said nodding. "So...it's just the two of us."
He smirked and walked into the bar with me.
It was then that I realized.
I diffidently walked to a table with him and we sat facing each other.
Trevor dropped his phone on the table and leaned forward, placing his elbow on the table and resting the side of his face on his palm.
I couldn't help but stare into his dark brown irises as he stared back at mine.
"So... school is very much now Okayyy?" he asked.
I smiled.
"Yeah...so far. It's been cool. Most people are nice. Though my grades haven't been good enough. I think I need to work on them. What about you?"
"Nerd."
I rolled my eyes.
"Well, yeah. Like you said people have been nice. Um, my grades...let's skip that." He laughed. "I'm in the school's basketball team."
"Really?"
"Yeah. I aced tryouts." he bragged.
"Wow. You play basketball?"
"I'm in love with basketball."
I smiled shyly. I have no idea why.
"That's amazing. How's practice?"
"It's okay. Since I'm friends with Alexis, I get special treatment. So, I can skip if I want to anyday."
"Mmm...okay."
"What?"
"Nothing. I wish I could see you play one time."
"You can watch me play when this season's tournament starts or...in my house when I practice."
"You have a court in your house?"
"Yeah. I practice there everyday. I could even teach you a few stuff it you're interested."
"That'll be cute– I mean nice."
I said flushing at my words.
Trevor just laughed.
"And you said I was funny."
"It wasn't on purpose I made you laugh," I said slightly embarrassed.
"Doesn't matter. Even if it's unintentional. You're funny...and sweet."
I stared at him unable to speak.
He stared back, studying me.
I felt so nervous.
After a tense moment, he picked his phone up.
"Hey, you never gave me your number."
"Oh, yeah."
So I did.
We chatted for a while until he leaned forward and whispered to me, "Hey. Alexis and I thought of something a few days ago. Well, it was his idea. You know we're new to the whole magic stuff. So, we decided to explore the kingdoms ourselves now that we have accessories and we can teleport. We thought it'll be cool."
My eyes widened in surprise.
"Trevor! That's so risky. We could appear in some scary place and put ourselves in danger. It's really irresponsibe. Does Chang know about this? Or Bru?"
Trevor groaned and leaned backwards.
"Come on Maddie. Don't be such a goody two shoes all the time. I mean...it's not a bad thing. It's cute but..."
He looked at me and down at the table.
"I mean, let's just do something interesting. You have magic powers. You can do a lot of things with it–"
"You didn't answer the question Trev."
He sighed.
"No, I haven't told then yet. But they didn't say we couldn't do it right?"
I thought about it.
"But they also didn't say if we should. Shouldn't we tell them?"
"Come on Maddie, that's not necessary. No one wants another lecture on Reina and it's famous battles. You know Chang is always ready for one. All he needs now are his textbooks and a really nice classroom. Give him cute little glasses and that pointy stick that–"
I burst out laughing. Sorry, I couldn't help it.
Trevor barely smiled, like he didn't say anything funny.
"Trevor, you need help."
"Well, I don't disagree. But think about it, Maddie. It'll help. We'll get used to everything. It'll be fun. We might actually enjoy being spirits of Reina, combining powers and whatnot."
He looked at me pleadingly. It was hard to say no.
"Fine," I said. "I'll do it. And...I'll also tell Lucy about it."
"Yes!" Trevor said beaming. "You're the best Madz."
I smiled at him.
I looked at the table then I shifted my gaze to the window.
It was late now. I had to leave.
"Thanks for hanging out Trev. I loved spending time with you."
He looked at me for a moment and then stood up.
"Loved hanging out with you too. You know we didn't get to talk last time, cuz the whole...Chang disappearing, appearing stuff. But today was nice. Also, thanks for agreeing to the plan. I'm counting on you. I'll tell you when we're leaving."
"Yeah..." I was saying 'til he walked round and pulled me up.
"Come on, let's take a walk..." he said.
I looked up at him.
"...out of the bar," he said cracking up.
"OMG! The look on your face."
"You have problems, Trevor."
He kept laughing as I locked the door and walked past him down the street.
"Hey!" He ran to catch up with me.
He did finally.
"I never got to say bye."
We were facing each other now.
"Bye!" he said exaggeratedly, waving his hands in my face with widened eyes.
I rolled my eyes.
"Yeah, bye," I said, smiling.
I moved to turn away but he held me back.
Then he opened his arms out for a hug.
I hugged him and pulled away awkwardly.
Then he smiled and ruffled my hair.
He walked away sauntering down the road lazily.
I stood there, stunned for a while.
Then I blinked and turned the other direction, starting to walk home.
"It was just a friendly gesture right?"
I asked myself as I walked alone down the street.
